  • Hey man! I just recently picked up an LE. I'm curious which patch you are using for this clean tone? Sounds really nice. Thanks!

  • sounds awesome.. love the tone

  • @storminthedistance

Thanks man. I think it sounds a bit thin in the clip, but in the room it's fatter. I do like it cleaner than some guys though that's for sure.

  • @storminthedistance

Hi there. I'm sorry but I don't really remember which patch I was using for this clip. It was a Fender model of some sort. These days I'm back to using a conventional amp. The Tonelab was great, but like most guitarists, I need a change once in awhile. Good luck and enjoy the Lab. It's a great unit.

  • Im considering the vox tonelab ex since they discontinued the le. It seems like the le sounds better, though. I don't know why it was discontinued. I don't know if the circuitry is quite the same as the le.

  • beautifull tone.

can u plez send me the exact settings of your tone plz?

  • lol 'Oh, I think it's a Fender amp, I don't worry about that stuff too much'. HA! Gearheads vomitted in their mouths when you said that. Personally I agree with the sentiment that it lacks color but is certainly good enough for live. Thanks for posting.

  • @whaaaaateverful

I think you'd have to hear it live to make that call. Remember, this is a clip taken from a digital camera (and its cheezy mic), watched on a computer.

I recently put together a conventional tube amp and pedal rig (Dr Z and some really good pedals).

Sounds good, but I'm not sure it's any better than digital. I get my sound out of pretty much any kind of set up.

  • @mxgr194 I thought about the camera mic thing right after I posted. It's true. Time to go down to the store and play around. My ears are very tuned to tone but I agree that you can find good sounds in many places the purists wouldn't dare to tread. It's so boring if everyone agrees on the same handful of approved sounds.

  • very beautiful sound:)

  • great tone great demo!

  • @edwardtang1977

Thanks man! I haven't been playing for awile but I'm starting to pick it up again.

  • Nice playing....sorry about the guitar :(

  • HI FROM GREECE...IF I WANT TO USE THE TONELAB WITH A P.A should i use a d.i with it? cause i have used the tonelab a couple of times connected directly to a p.a and i didn't like the sound that much.i want to avoid the crap solid state amps that more studios have.i know that i should use ln2 mode ....but anything else....should i use a d.i like you do?

  • I asked him the same question in another post, heres the answer he gave me...If the tonelab is offstage and far from the PA then go ahead and use the DI boxes but, if the tonelab is onstage with you or you just using it in your garage or home setting then the DI is not nessesary

  • Case in point, vox ac30 has a plathora of sounds when used with your current set up. Imagine multiplying that option with the number of amps and configurations possible!

    virtually ENDLESS!!!!

Technology is like a wild horse that needs to be tamed. If you can do this, you can ride it wherever you want to go!

  • Nice tone!

There is a way of playing multi effects amp modellers and that is to treat it as such. However, because of the number of parameters and the learning curve required to use a specific amp modeller to optimum capacity, many guitar players tend to hide behind what they currently have and stand by their "organic" tone decision.

Yet, when used correctly, an amp modeller can spell the differecene between having an exponential amount of sounds and tones on your sound canvass!

  • thanks for the demos, your tone and playing are magnificent. thinking of getting an le, got a gt8 which i am fed up with

    thanks again

  • Hey there mate

I'd like to get some hints from you!

    If you could;

    1 - Which mode you use it? Amp 1, 2 , 3 or line 1, 2?

2 - Do you use it in line or use an Amp?

3 - in which way do you Eq your TLLE?

Cause I have a Peavey Classic 30, A Les Paul, a Fender Strat, An ESP and can't seem to get a tone as good as yours =/

I thank you A LOT if you could help me man.

  • Still sounds modeled though. It doesn't have any body our soul to the tone..

  • If you say so. I've always hought that soul came from the player. As for body, that's the wat I eq'd it.

Perhaps you'd care to share a clip of your tone for my reference?

  • No, you're totally right, it does. Your playings got it, but the tone is hollow and leaves much to be desired. I'd use modelling if I was strictly playing in a diverse cover band, but thats pretty much it. Sorry, I'd love to share some clips, but I have none on the net.

  • I guess it comes down to personal taste. The typical tube "clean" tones that many players prefer sound dirty as hell to me.

    I like my cleans CLEAN.

Covers or originals, I use the tones tha my ear prefers. Different strokes

  • I think your tone is awesome man.

  • Do you think the LE is better than SE when talking about sound quality?

    Great tone man!

  • Well, first, thanks for the compliment.

I think there are a few improved models with the LE but the SE sounds fine. I recorded an album with the SE and was happy with the sounds.

If you really need the extra expression pedal on the SE I'd say it's worth it to accept a little lower resolution in sound quality.

Yes the LE sounds better, but not a huge amount.

  • thanks for your help today it works better than yesterday but if i have trouble again i will follow your advise

  • hey man your videos inspired me in buying tonelab le and im absolutely satisfied with it but some times one of the steal buttons the modulation to be exact doesnt respond. do you know what should i do?

  • Great to hear that you're another TLLE user!

Unfortunately the only solution is to get it fixed while it's still under warranty. It shouldn't cost a nickel, but you'll be without the unit for a few weeks.

I deal with the same store for a LOT of business so I know they would provide a loaner while it was away, but naturally that depends on the store.

Even intermittant troubles like yours should be covered.

    Good luck,

    Mike

  • I'm afraid your question is beyond my technical knowledge of the unit. Certainly a device like the G Sharp can be inserted to the Tonelab's Effects loop, but I can't speak with any authority on it's midi capabilities,

Wishi I could tell you more.

    Mike

  • hi man, nice tones you have there.. i have a question for you, can the tonelab control presest from a unit like a TC electronics G sharp via midi? i really like the amp emulation of this pedal, but i would love to improve the cleans without braking the bank..

  • Hey Gallo, I run my tonelab into thew line in on my computer. I can plug my headphones into the computer and jam along with media player and disturb anybody. Its great. I can play as loud as I want and the tone is killer.

  • can these be used as a preamp if i plug right into a pa or power amp?

  • yes, a cabinet modeling is included, too.

  • Yes. That's really one of the main purposes of these devices.

  • Hello.

This patch are Presets from Vox tonelab or are programmed by you?

    Really sound great.

I play directly to a PA by 2 I/O Box, and I'm thinking about GT8-GT10 or this tonelab.

    Any sugestion?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

The sounds are presets which I modified. Really all I had to do was to drastically rduce the effects and adjust the eq to my taste. Also, it's important to note that the mic on the video camera cuts out a lot of bottom end so the actual sound is a bit fatter in person.

My suggestion is to try both units through the same amplification and with the same guitar and go with your gut. I suspect you can get a good sound from either. I chose the Tonelab because I think it's the best.

  • Thanks a lot!!!

Tonelab I think have a natural tone, less "plastic" than others.

    Keep Rockin'

P.D. It is for play in a orchestra. For my band I prefer a Tube Head :P

  • I like your playing!! very good! Im planning to buy this Tonelab Vox....but...I have 2 questions...

    1. Can you play real time if you hook it up to the computer? I mean...would it be possible to play live along with backing tracks?

    2. If im going to play live, what kind or types of Amp do I need? a very simple one? please, tell me about it.

    You rock!!!

  • Hey Gallo,

    1. I really don't connect it to a computer but I know people do it. I know you can send the output to your computers speakers so I'm sure you can do what you're asking.

    2. I connect directly to the PA (no amp at all). If you do use an amp I would recommend a keyboard amp or a powered PA monitor. Either of those will not "colour" the sound like a guitar amp would.

The Tonelab is designed as a complete rig (pedals, amp and speakers).

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks man,

    Mike

  • Sure it did. Thanks very much sir. Keep Rockin.!

  • It would be as good but MUCH more limited. The Tonelab's strength is of course in its ability to copy famous amps, but not just one amp. It will also allow you to replicate MArshalls, Vox's, Fenders and others as well as providing excellent effects.

    Timmons is indeed a monster.

    I hope this helps,

    Mike

  • Hello Dr.MXR you got the best demos for the Tonelab LE, i am analog guy i like Andy Timmons and paul Gilbert type of tones i was willing to buy a Laney LC15 and make it run through a good distortion pedal , do your think that would be more real in tone more than vox tone lab le through PA ?

please let me know what to do

    Many Thanks .

  • Nice strat amazing glass -Period.

  • Thanks. I think some people find it TOO clean, but I really like my cleans to be clean (no hair as they say).

  • what setting are you using on this clean patch? i can't get a good clean tone to save my life.

  • I'm sorry to say I don't know. I would have to turn it on and check.

Really though, all I did was to take an existing patch and turn off some of the effects. I think the clean tone comes largely from the single coil pickups.

  • The amp and head models are seperated, but I'm not sure if you can completely bypass the amp model and use the device just for a cab modeler. You can definitely mix and match amps and cabinets though.

  • Are the cabinet and head models separated. So that it can be used for purely cabinet simulations?

  • Can the ToneLab drive a cabinet without an amp in between?

  • No. The Tonelab does not have a power amp and so cannot drive a cabinet by itslf. None of the competitors units can do this either (Line 6, Korg, Boss et cetera).

  • This is the best floor pedal in the world , real tones like amps , good price and veratil , Thanks MXGR i like your taste .

  • Do you know if it's possible to run this on the amp's loop for more tone options, but also use the amp alone (like a bypass section of tonelab's)? And is this unit pedal friendly? If I'd use a ts-9 with tonelab's clean sounds, would that be ok?

    Thnaks!

  • Yes, as long as your amp's loop can be bypassed with a foot switch you can do that. Also, the Lab itself has an effects loop which enables yu to insert pedals quite easily.

  • is the korg ax 3000g the same as the vox le?

  • Well they do similar things. Are they the same? I guess it comes down to taste. I tried all of the major brands including the Korg and selected the Vox. This was based on sound quality, capabilities and ease of use.

  • So would you say different exterior, but same innereds.Oh Le has a tube, but does it make that big of a difference. I use the korg ax 3000 on my youtube page (original song) give a listen. thanks.

  • I really don't know, because I don't use an amp with this device. I use it INSTEAD of an amp. I plug it right into the PA.

If you want to use it as an effects unit, one way to bypass it would be to put it in the effects loop of your amp (presuming you have a footswitch to bypass the loop).

    I hope this helps,

    Mike

  • Sounds amazing! I just purchased this pedal and love it! But how exactly do you create a clean patch on it?

  • How? Well if you really want to, you can build a patch from ground up, but all I do is find a patch that's close to what I want and remove the stuff I don't need (too many effects generally).

I think the key is to use single coil pickups.

Enjoy the pedal and thanks for checking out the clip,

    Mike

  • Awesome thanks! But is it possible to have a bypass setting for one of the bank spaces? For example, when you hit the "delay" (silver) button you will have bypass, clean on your amp...

  • I love the tone lab le, i find they are way better than the line 6, one question have you ever tryed the tonelab se with the duel expreshion peddles?

  • Yes. I owned an SE prior to the LE and in fact I recorded an entire album with it.

I prefer the smaller size of the LE and don't miss the other expression pedal. The sounds are a little better in the LE.

  • My opinion is that in general the Vox modelers sound better than the Line 6. I haven't tried the pod X3.

I like the LE a lot.

  • whats your opinion of the Tonelab LE please?

is the pod x3 better ?

  • I have been playing bass for about 2 years and I recently started playing guitar. I want a multi effects pedal for my guitar . I am between the Boss Me-50 and the Tonelab Le. My friends tell me the Me 50 has some cool effects but some are mediocre and the Wah could have been much better. The Tonlab Le sounds great but it's a little more expensive next to the BOSS. Do you recomend me to pay the extra money for the VOX?

  • Well, honestly I haven't tried the Boss so it's not fair for me to comment on it, but the Vox is worth every penny in my opinion.

It's important to note that the Vox is more than just a multi effects unit. It's an amp and effects MODELLING device. The sounds are very natural and respond like a tube amp.

  • drooool

  • I'll take that as a positive.

    Thanks very much,

    Mike

  • very nice Clean man, I Like the sound.

  • Thanks very much. I'm starting to believe more and more that the key to a good clean tone lies in using single coil pickups. Lately I've been using a Boss Recording device (BR900CD) and the clan tones are every bit as nice as the Tonelab.

Trying to get clean tones from humbuckers or P90s doesn't work for me.

  • I would love to, but I honestly don't remember. I always take an existing patch and twek it. The sound must be a stock patch with most of the effects turned off. Sounds like a Fender amp setting to me. The unit is locked away right at the moment.

    Good luck,

    Mike

  • Hi, would you share with me the Tonelab LE settings that you made to produce that sound ? It sounds great ...

  • great sound

  • Nope they're gone. I had to borrow a guitar to play tonight (New Years Eve).

    C'est la vie

  • FYI, this guitar was stolen from my home along with a mandolin, a red Fender Tele and an 80 gig iPod, sometime between Dec 14 and Dec 28.

  • holy shit someone stole them??? have you found them??

  • I look for a list of the patches of the vox LE , vox LE !!

  • Hello, have you really used no amp with this sound?

or plugged into your pc speakers?

I look for this great sound of blues and of SRV.

How can i get this sound? with a fender and a fender amp?

  • No amp at all. The guitar sound in the video was obtained by plugging into a Vox Tonelab LE modelling pedal and then directly to the PA.

Yes you can get a great clean blues tone with a Fender guitar and a Fender amp if you choose.

  • SO , it was the sound of your computer speakers + vox tonelab.

    Is-it an Ibanez guitar?

Can you tell me what is modelled in this patch?

    A Fender amp like a twin reverb 65 + ibanez ts9?

I look for a list of the patches of the vox se too.

THis sound is really fantastic even if it's clean.

  • My computer or computer speakers had nothing to do with it.

It was the sound of the Tonelab into a PA system as recorded direct to the video camera. That's it. The computer was not in the room.

The guitar is a MIM Fender Strat with Carvin pickups, but really any single coil pickups can yield similar results.

I don't remember which amp was modelled but it sounds like a Fender to me.

    Thanks for checking it out.

  • What's a PA system? !

    Some hifi speakers?

    I don't speak english fluently.

  • A PA system is basically a mixer and speakers. It's what a band uses to amplify everything when playing live.

  • No, it's a modelling pedalboard.

No guitar amp was used in the video clip at all.

  • is this a combo amp made by vox?

  • I know im probably gonna get hurt for asking this but what is the name of that song you start playing at 28 seconds?

  • That was Free Ride by The Edgar Winter Group.

  • Very Nice, Can you send me the setup?

  • I'll try to remember to do this. It's a fairly "vanilla" tone as you can hear. Just a matter of keeping the gain down and EQing to taste.

    And thanks,

    Mike

  • so is there any way to set up the tonelab so that we can leave John at home?

  • please, a friend said me that "...in TONELAB LE There is no A/B switch, so if you need both a clean and dirty channel on a song, you need to get creative..."...that's true...?. Please talk about this...thanks.

  • Well your friend is partly correct. There is no A/B but nobody really used the A/B for this purpose anyway. To have a clean and dirty sound in the same song, you simply program the sounds you want in a bank (there are four sounds in every bank. This is a basic requirement for me and I have no trouble doing it at all.

  • Hey Milkman..

This is Lucidology from the TGP forum...

I just love the fact that it's so clean...

    Reminds me of a cross between a JC120 & a 100 watt Twin ...

The SE version before this was incapable of this kind of clean ... the LE is a totally different approach.

In fact, it's you excellent playing & demo here of the Tonelab SE that convinced me to buy it ...

Try the Dumble Clean amp for a little more rounded warm Tone, but still very clean ...

    Thanks Milkman ...!!

  • Hey thanks man. I'm quite happy with the LE so far, but I definitely would like to fatten up my clean sound while still keeping it CLEAN. I don't like hairy clean tones. Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out for sure.

  • Very Cool Milkman..

sounds like that the 2 X 12 Blackface tone (via Twin)

  • Thanks man,

You may be right. It sounds a bit like a Fender amp, but almost TOO clean to be a Fender. Of course with single coils it's not terribly hard to get a decent clean tone.

  • Wow, sweet man. How about a little demo on how to play Free Ride? I wanted you to keep jammin on that!

  • Thanks and sure no problem. The next time I have my rig set up (should be later this week) I'll blast through Free Ride for you.

  • Cool, thanks and keep on rockin!

  • Great clean sound.

  • Thanks. Some folks think it's a little TOO clean, but that's the way I like it.
