i've got to say that this is one of my favorite kata but you need the upper body strength tp make it look goo. i've heard of people taking their jackets off to do it.
this is a terrible misconception, seishan is used from internal power the shoulders stay straight and your technique comes from your internal muscles rather than your pectoral or bicep muscles
its fair enough, sorry if i sounded condesending, its a concept of using your core in relaxation and you find you are so much more powerful as your body is in a way dead weight where as with muscles
e.g. try picking someone up first get them to tense their body then get them to fall asleep completely (or pretend to) which is harder to lift,
this is hard to achieve fully until you are around 3rd 4th dan usually,
however otsuka is at least in his 70's here and would performed the kata differently to someone in thier 20's.
also, kata does tend to evolve over the years especially with modern competitions today.even when it is just taught by two differnt people, there will always be slight differences.
personally,i am traditionalist.i like to know what im doing is the same as that which was performed years ago,but it is very difficult to keep kata unchange.

thats really interesting.i have read and have been taught by many that the first part is all performed under tension though.
i get what you mean by using the core muscles as opposed to the uper body.
just out of curiosity, what dan are you?

I'm only 1st dan under traditional wado karate, but I learn frequently under a 9th dan and 7th and 6th dans
let me ask you a question when the founder does this kata does is look like he has tension?

wow,who and where do you train with?
