I've found that a mix of both is a happy medium for me. I use some paper plates, and some plastic silverware... I think its hard to stay away from the convenience of plastic. Not the best option, but neither is a lot of things...

Disposable makes sense... I am always grossed out when I see people with silverware lying around in their dorms.
