A most convenient way to manage black & white adjustments.

I think your better opening to image in camera raw, making changes to the part of the photo you want to, shift click to add that as a smart object. Duplicate it, rasterize the duplication then going back and changing what you want to the second part of the image you want to change. Layer masking and painting in. Then adding layers and filters. Personal preference I suppose but the exposure, parametic graph and fill light in camera raw are really helpful.

Photoshop CS2 doesn't include the Black & White adjustment layer, but you can use the Channel Mixer adjustment layer with the Monochrome checkbox turned on to get similar results. It doesn't offer the "direct adjustment" capability, and doesn't allow you to adjust as many channels, but it is the "next best thing" for those who aren't using Photoshop CS3 or later.
