  • fucking Counterbalance & Sensei's Divining Top combo ... i hate it

  • why is the sound so low in all the videos?!

  • merfolk is a heck of a deck now...

  • I think echoing truth is for tokens, most notably myr incubator? Incubator seems pretty strong in Workshop...

  • this man fails

  • merflok is not a deck... merfolk is, however.

  • my deck is pretty similar but i use 2 stifle, 4 vision charm instead of 4 stifle, 2 trickbind and instead of adding the counterbalance combo i added white so i could add swords to plowshares and orim's chant

  • MERFLOK NOT A DECK??? As long as there is AEther vial there will be merfolk!

  • i yelled at paul shortly after he did this interview...he was given advice by team.We are team hammafist we created the deck.lol

  • hey, i found counter balance sensei's diving top i'm a pro

    No, you're not.

  • Well shame he doesn't play anymore professionally. But poker is better, so heh...

  • Echoing Truth is alsow an awsome card to play in the end of your oponents turn before you play your standstill

  • For those that dont know (paul cheon) the reason for the Echoing Truth is for Goblin Storm & Bridge from below. True you have 4-5 Tormod Crypt's against Dreadge Bridge but still... you cant ever have something that will not come in handy when it comes to Legacy. For those that dont know US Team got DQ's at Worlds so he didnt play the deck.

  • @krazykidpsx my bad i just realized this was for 08 worlds not 09.

  • merfolk NOT really a deck hahaha priceless

  • Merfolk IS a Tier1 Deck, Fast & big Threats, good Counterspells,

U´re able to handle your opponents creatures witoout any problem.

I´m playing the Stilfe/Wasteland-List with Jitte=>Sideboard, because our Metagame has a lot of Treshold Players and against them I´m splashing White for Hallow.

Hallow=>Perfect Spell, prevent complete Damage from Spell u gain prevented Damage in Life=Flamebreak with six creatures= 24 Life for me, thx =)

Pyroclasm is only good when i got only one lord from 10 Lords

  • no merfolk is teir 1 legacy

  • actually merfolk is a ter 1 deck in legay

  • Merfolk not a real deck...That's hilarious, and pretty ironic regarding the fact that Merfolk is a Tier1 today and appears in multiple Top8's all around the world.

  • I may be wrong but he is talking legacy merfolk, and you are talking about standard merfolk.

  • I was actually talking about Legacy, if you do some research, you will figure out that it's true what i said about Legacy Merfolks. The thing is, Paul Cheon is arguebly a better mtg player than i, but he has obviously no clue about Legacy at all.

  • I find most good players on the Pro Tour don't follow the Eternal formats at all, sadly.

  • pretty sure leagcy merfolk top 8s ALOT :p.. seems like ppl pick it over goblins.. its very good and agressive

  • yeah wakethrasher is pretty beast now

  • This deck definitely looks very fun to play! Will have to make it soon :)

  • i was so close to beating cheon at a timespiral block tournament

  • I got my ass kicked by a merfolk list when i was playing dreadstill so i woud't be so sure "it's not even a deck"

  • its not the cards its the player

  • not always, sometimes people just get unlucky

  • its the cards the player has picked, the best player in the world with nufin but basic lands in their deck wont beat a noob with a good deck. as long as u know how to play ur cards it will come dow to hu has maximized their chances by making the better deck

  • it wasn't a deck in 2008, once the newmerfolk came out it turned into a decent deck.

  • @meanberry

yup, its just another player who thinks that to play magic and be at the top, you have to empty your wallet on cardboard

    what else is new?

btw, i bet he was extremely surprised to face merfolks, seeing as he didnt really sideboard for them either

  • @meanberry Its a top tier deck.

  • How do you do that? Lol, can someone teach me because I would love to be able to do that. haha! Nice Vid..

  • He's right, T1 it often doesn't matter how good you are because you just win on turn one sometimes... which is why I play T1! :D

  • Cheon with Dreadstill FTW! This deck is just too hot!

  • what does island walk swamp walk mountain walk and forest walk and plains walk mean

  • if the opponent your attacking has the basic land of the choice. eg forest walk> forest ... it is unblockable

  • Haha did we just catch Paul Cheon say "it doesn't matter how good you are" referring to type one deck-players? :D

  • @abaddon1919 No, we watched him say, "I don't care how good you are..." There is a big difference.

  • Awesome deck <3, glad I created it for ya! :D

  • loles

And they had to rename it...

  • Great Deck! :O

  • i couldn't help but laugh watching this and reading the comments, thanks for making my morning

  • The comparison to Flash wasn't supposed to say that it was similar to the deck in terms of power level, just that they can both play as controlling decks with lots of countermagic to support cheap, two-mana two-card win conditions. >.>

  • They should do some more of these, interested in the meta @ worlds.

  • In case anyone was wondering, the designer of this deck is named Rodney Hanngian.

And yeah, this deck is nowhere NEAR what Flash was.

  • Oops, that's Rodney HANNIGAN, not 'Hanngian'

  • the cards under the dreadnaughts are the 2 engineered explosives.

  • Which are the cards below the Dreadnoughts?

  • werd paul cheon saved our american asses

  • Wizards, show all the Legacy matches on Sunday! SHOW THEM ALL! (uncut too)

  • Dreadstill is a very good deck but it's not CLOSELY similar to flash hulk.

  • Paul Cheon, representin'

  • always wanted to play dread decks for teh luls

  • Explain to me how Red Elemental Blast cannot get Misdirected? They both target a spell, so technically they both should be able to be misdirected....

  • Pyroblast is strictly inferior as it is modal ("if") and can target any spell/permanent whereas REB can only be Misdirected to blue spells/permanents.

Props for mentioning David Ochoa... he's a great player... much better than me, though I have a 1-0-1 record on him due to deck choice :P

    I miss Cali :(

  • I could see this is Good PR for Cheon as a player...I can't say the same for Wizards...

  • Well, being specific, both can be. The difference is really specific: if there is just one blue permanent in play and that is the targeted card through the Pyro/REB, (mode is chosen, so it can't change to countering Misdirection) Misdirection can move a Pyroblast but not a REB. (the former targets any permanent, but doesn't check for color until it resolves; the latter checks as part of the choice of target)

  • So, David Oocha builds your legacy deck because he wins a bunch of Vintage tournaments and then you bag on vintage for being too luck based?

    Yeah, explain that one

  • he was asked to compare, and he said in vintage even if you are good you can loose to a lucky draw

  • How can that not be said for ANY OTHER format?

  • ok dude whatever its been like a month anyway. t1 is the only format where matchup %'s may not matter because if someone kills you turn 1 the you usualy cant do anything. no need for another reply also.

  • He almost hit the best deck, at least he's really close. Should do fine with that deck either way. Sooo much better then... Merfol...? It's saddening how current pros don't know very much about eternal formats.

  • Sam Black is not a "pro".

  • youre kinda right. he was certainly the weakest of the u.s. team.
