  • I like the sound when cars go over the track.

  • The second gen sd160 that were introduced in edmonton.. sweet cars.. leave to edmonton and calgary to kick ass in light rail..haha

  • Edmonton got these first

  • I agree totally about the seats , having to sit facing inward is pretty awful! Whoever designs the interiors certainly dont have to travel in them!

  • i hate these kinds of trains. its uncomfortable looking at someone across you. one time i actually WANTED to miss the c-train because of this model. If the seat were facing the front and back of the s-train, then i would be happy.

  • if only the seat weren't sideways. its uncomfortable when ur sitting sideways. if it was like the other seats facing to the front and back of the c-trains, i'd like it.

  • That voice is too friggen chatty.

  • Which also begs the question why is he braking the whole fucking time EEEEERRRRRR

  • @101101101777 It's not just braking, but also speed control. If the car in question is coasting, the inverters will make that sound. Almost all AC-based vehicles make this noise or a similar sound. The older U2ACs (2101 and 2102) make this noise as do all the SD160s (newer ones included). Subway cars in Toronto and Manhattan make this noise. The noise generated on Canadian Pacific's General Electric and EMD AC units can be deafening.

  • Will they still make that god damn fucking high pitched electrical noise. I fucking hate that noise it comes on when the driver brakes, so sometimes he's braking for the whole trip and it's nothing but fucking EEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • @101101101777 Inverters cause that sound, converting DC to AC voltage, then regenerating power back to the overhead when breaking.

  • I understand that these cars can have more capacity but they are unenjoyable. I see commuters with their bags, laptops etc. and having to hang onto these for the entire ride into downtown. Before they could sit down and have these things piled on their laps, now they are draped over their shoulders impeding access or on the floor getting dirty when it's snowy. The seats (when you get one) are extremely uncomfortable and the view (someone's groin) is less than desirable.

  • @jsilvertsait

Lol, you can go across the whole city in like 20 mins with these trains...not like you NEED to sit down. Stop yo bitchin.

  • I really think that the new paint scheme is allot better than train the old pink, blue and white, as well as the air conditioning was well needed. can't wait to see these new models when I travel out to the west this sumer!

  • transit sucks

  • @sunnysonny29 Wys that?

  • @thebuffalodude yow dude everyday of my life here in Calgary, this transit is the only option to get to work.they are never on time and they truly suck especially during bad weather

  • fire your stupid late drivers,be on time and improve your service ctransit!!!!thats the first thing you have to do instead of spending for somethingelse

  • most successful in all of north america? calgary transit fuckin blows. waiting an hour for the train and having 4 of them pass by you blinking "out of service" in the front is not fun. ever since i moved to vancouver i haven't had to wait more than 10 minutes for a train. even late at night.

  • I was on one of them there SICK! i love them

  • Was out train spotting yesterday, and saw U2DC car # 2041 (I think, it was a U2DC, I know that for certain), coupled with a pair of early-generation SD-160s... Was quite surprised, that they'd managed to get the old DC's to work with the new SDs... Any info on that?

  • Congradulations to Calgary for finally catching up with Edmonton.

  • @mastersoldier WTF are you talking about? We had the SD-160s long before Deadmonton did, since July, 2001. They got their first 160 into revenue service in January, 2009.

  • why dont we get some of these in toronto?

  • I don't like the new grey/red colours, looks depressing. The white, when clean looks classy, even after all these years.

  • I saw the new car on the tracks between southland and heritage. I think it was just delivered last weekend. Looks pretty cool!

  • @metman18 yup, you sure did the train should be inside Anderson garage in the next day or two

  • @metman18 Wow you guys actually got it the year that they had promised ? LOL

They told us here in toronto.. new subway 2009.. NO WHERE to be seen. LRT 2020.. WTF !

    LMAO stupid toronto. I'm moving.

  • @metman18 I saw it near the Canyon Meadows station. Looks cool.

  • On skyscraperpage forums i saw calgary got there first Edmonton-style SD160 only that it had the same coupler as the U2's and older style SD160's for potential mixed consists where Edmonton has 2 different coupler's making the 2 different trains incompatible.

  • @SPS148669 The couplers are the same on the new train, however the pins are different, now one is sure untill the train gets to Anderson garage, will post on cptdb.ca when we have more info

  • @SPS148669 I see the new trains mixed all the time in Edmonton.

  • Was out spotting the CTrain today... Was pleased to see U2AC 2102 out and about, but was surprised to see SD160 #2206. Apparently Calgary Transit decided that this unit, and at least 3 others, should receive the new Diet Coke livery and a sort of a "skirt" on the roof, hiding the roof equipment. Didn't get the car numbers on the other 3 as they were part of a consist that we passed by at speed. Anyways, when I get photos, I may send them to Trainweb...

  • @Historymaker2001 Cars 2202, 2204, 2205, 2207 have the new colors and roof treatments, all SD160s will recieve the upgrades to match the new SD160 series 8 cars that will be arriving June 10th. Car 2101 (the 1st U2 AC car) is in the shops being refurbished. Thanks for the post!!!

  • @thebuffalodude Thanks for the info. Any idea if the U2s will get the new colors? I must admit, I'll miss the pinstrip paint (is that what it's called? LOL!), and am not REAL fond of the Diet Coke paint. Now to figure out what to do about the guys from Edmonton who are claiming we are copying them again by getting this style of car... LOL!

  • @Historymaker2001 I don't think any U2s will get the new colors as they are going to retire them soon but if they do it could be cars 2101 and 2102 as they are in the best condition, how ever they brought 2 U2 cars back to life recently, cars 2019 "B" end and 2027 "A" end became one car now numbered 2090. Calgary has had SD160s since 1999, 1st in North America.

  • @thebuffalodude Any particular reason why they married the two cars? I would assume both of the "discarded" ends (2019A and 2027B) were suffering from some sort of mechanical problem (or an accident, but I haven't seen anything lately)... and rather than repair them, they opted to mate the working ends and gut the rest... any spotting difference between this unit and other U2DCs (besides the number)?

  • @thebuffalodude Whoops, found the info. Apparently 2019 and 2027 were part of a string of accidents that happened in 2007. Seems people are getting more and more careless around these trains, as all 4 of the KO'd cars have seen their lives end in the last 8 years, starting with car 2010 in 2002.

  • @Historymaker2001 We should see car 2050 back in service soon, maybe as car 2091, car 2057 may take a bit longer as it is still sitting on a storage track at Anderson garage. As for the AC cars they are always coupled to SD160s, they have extra fan intakes on the exterior near the articulation just like the SD160s, they also have a slightly different seating arrangment. The AC cars are very similar to the SD160s as they were based off them.

  • 2010 huh...

We're already in March so where the bloody hell are these cars? They're long overdue.

  • @SilvaliorFox 1st car should be here June 2010, 3 car revenue service in September 2010

  • The old ones are crap!

Replace them all with this one!

  • i think its STUPID buuut i like the idea of air-conditioning, last summer there was only 2

  • As you drive the trains, could you use the PA to remind passengers the next time it gets hot in Calgary (in 8 months) to leave the windows closed so that the air-conditioning can work properly?

  • Not to worry, the windows are now locked. They can no longer be opened by the passengers

  • I don't like this new arrangement.

  • And all thanks to you all .The Taxpyer

  • Sigh..

I';m on youtube, and you had to remind me of my 30 minute, 10 stop, ctrain ride after work..

    haha =)

  • Maybe I'll be the one who will be driving you home on the train!

  • Here in Kitchener Ontario the buses are air conditioned and when I was in Edmonton from 2006 - 2008 during the summer I boiled like an egg in a pot! I am glad they finally put air conditioning in They sure need it and Edmonton too!!!!!

  • i think this city is not changing, eventhough they buy a new train, they will still use the old train that doens't much the color of the train. and trees on the streets, it looks boring. they should put flowers and plants too. this city is like a car. if you know how to make it nice, it will be nice

  • they have lots of construction going on, that shows the growth of the city, but i wish they would make suburbs, so when i drive a few minutes out of the city, i don't end up in an empty field.

  • These things NEED air conditioning, so this is good news. I can't count how many times people have passed out from the heat. On a hot day, it's easily 10 degrees warmer on a train packed with people.

  • Tell me about it, I drive the damn things...Car 2203 already has air conditioning so hop on that one if you see it!!!

  • Crybaby. Sweaty yes; but I operate them to!!

  • 2271 has air conditioning too!

  • So does car 2272.

  • I'm a better driver then you by the way!

  • How can you be a better driver? The thing just stays on the rails. LOL. A computer could drive those things.

    * ducks a hail of rotten tomatoes *

  • The trains are not as easy to drive as it looks, however it takes a good operator to drive a train smoothly, keep it on schedule and not to run anybody over. There is a high turnover with Ctrain operators, if you screw up too many times, you will find yourself behind a steering wheel of a bus real quick, if not you can get canned and no longer work for Transit.

  • I'm curious how the a/c works. Does the driver manually turn it on when he/she feels it is suitable, or does it automatically turn on after the inside temperature reaches a certain point. I was on 2203 this morning, and it wasn't exactly cool on there, it was quite warm, even though it was only 8am.

  • The cars are set at 21 degrees celcius all year round, the operators don't have axcess to the climate controll. Its set at the garage.

  • hopefully this will actually come in 2010, delays can happen.

  • what i want to know is why do they have 2 different designs? It looks so schtoopid.

I like both designs but go with one and have some consistency

  • Old design was no longer available. The last order should of come with air conditioning, how ever the SD160 fleet is in the process of being retro-fitted. Car 2203 has been already fitted with air conditioning. Video to follow in the comming weeks!

  • Are they repainting the calgary U2-cars to the new coca-cola-like paint job? Edmonton repainted some of our U2 to our new paint job but not all of them yet.

  • Nope! Some of the U2s are too far gone, and there is talk that we will see a mass retirement of those cars within the next 8-10 years. As it stands now, any major work needed on the U2s will not happen, they will be scraped as it happens

  • Blame it on the guys in the barn. However they are getting better at getting some symmetry going.

  • they should get new stations

  • There working on it

  • no you suck

  • WOW lot of arguing between edmonton and calgary on this video already, It's pretty funny.

  • Not realy, I'm from Edmonton..I drive these things in Calgary for a living I just like to pass some helpful info from time to time.

  • I agree!

  • I can see they changed the seating a least, In Edmonton the seating is tranverse like the U2 while calgary 3rd generation LRV the seating is longatude.(all facing the windows.

  • At least there will run like a streetcar while ours run like a subway.

  • Damn F**cking copycats. First they copy our U2's now they copy our new trains.

  • Copycats? Calgary Transit was the first City to get SD160s, then Salt lake city , Denver and Finaly Edmonton! Our oldest car is almost 9 years old. The body design is a varation of the SD-100 and that design was from the mid 80s, the SD160 was due for a redesign. The train is a off the shelf product anybody can get it. The U2 has been used in Germany way before Edmonton (1965) 12 years before. Hope the info helps.....
