The genius of Richard Wright brought us "Native Son,"a masterful achievement literary fiction that eloquently communicates to us the depths of depression and despair experienced by its main character "Bigger."Suspenseful twists and turns integral to each paragraph and chapter we encounter keep our attention for the duration of the novel.
Thanks for posting this! I read the book many years ago & was greatly impressed. A true American classic! I've known for years that a low budget independently produced version was filmed around 1950 but until now I wasn't able to see any footage from it. And with none other than the author himself in the title role! You've made my day & my weekend! CHEERS! :-)
great novel.. it graps your attention, you want read on and on. the language wright uses is fairly simple. he focuses on Bigger (he allows the reader into Bigger's mind) the description is focused on events rather than place etc. I am not sure if he deserves to die. It shows how a man is capable of everything, in order to survive (instinct of survival)
I fucking hate this book, the protagonist is a total ass hole, he deserves to die in the end. He killed two girls, he killed the second one after raping her.
@JWumboTravel You have completely missed the point of this novel, my friend. Richard Wright creates a character like Bigger in order to expose the crippling effects on the psyche that a demoralizing, discriminatory, and racist society can produce.
Simply put- Bigger is a product of his surroundings
@divadivadivadiva i'm sorry but i do not believe that is a good enough explanation for his actions. Was Bigger trained to be an assassin? no, therefor i believe that he should get what is coming to him. He has no right or reason to kill Bessie. He just does. I realize that he was discriminated against but that does not mean that he goes around breaking on of the fundamental human instincts, compassion. I realize that is the point of the novel, but it does not make any since.
You don't have to hate the whole book just because you have something against the protagonist. He is meant to be that way to make a sense to each and every thing he makes
@JWumboTravel your not supposed to necessarily like Bigger. He was not a good person. But what you have to understand is that he is the result of the hate that white America had on black people. He's a product of his environment. They left him there out in the streets to struggle and die because of their irrational fear of minorities.
@JWumboTravel also, the first murder was accident. Plus the whole justice system was very racist so you cant think they would give him a fair trial. And they didnt.
this book is like the sequel of Great Expectations, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Jack the Ripper all put into one package

This was filmed long before 1968. Richard Wright died in exile, in Paris, aged 52, in 1960. Michelle Obama's parents were in Chicago at that time.

it's a shame that this wonderful novel wasn't filmed in a good way ...
I wish that they can make a new film out of it because it is irresistible

Film was originally released in 1951. Wright passed away in 1960.

@danynumero6 im sorry, but i just cannot believe that his oppression is what caused him to kill people.

@JWumboTravel well its something that probably no one would understand unless they actually lived thru it and experienced it.
