i have a N reg ford escort mk 6 and when i have the air flow sensor connected the engine hunts and struggles to run but wen i disconnect the engine runs fine has the sensor gone? and in has a performance air filter could that affect it too?
my mass airflow system.. thats the biggest problem i have right now. i need to go to a wreckers and buy a the whole thing. my poor trucks been sitting and now its dead.. i dont know if its the battery or altonator
heyy scotty. your the best man your my hero and i love your videos....i had a question...i just bought a 2001 crown vic and runs great but sometimes it stalls and chokes and doesnt take off when i press on the peddle but after 20 sec or so it rides good again...do you think its from the air flow meter? help me out my friend. thank you
@ballfor626 could be lots of thing, watch my other video "fixing a car that idles poorly" and do all that. Of course change the fuel filter and air filter first, they can do that if clogged. Scotty
@scottykilmer Could the lean conditions on bank 1 and bank 2 on my 1999 Ford Taurus Se, be caused by a bad MAF sensor, plugged fuel filter, vacuum leak, or a bad manifold intake gasket?
hey iv got a question about the air flow meter.. my car is 1996 evolution 4 i was watching car idle i tough f$%k it and pulled the air flow plug of and the car stumbled and then ran a crap load better?? dose this mean it broken?
my car was shaking at stops and traffic lights, and if let go long enough would cut off. I took it to Meineke and they said there was a Mass Air Flow they replaced it and the next day it did the same thing. They replaced it again and it did the same thing. They said it was a re-manufactured part. Would it have been better to get a brand new part from Toyota?
When do maf sensors start going bad, and what are the symptoms? I have a 2007 camry with 80,000 miles. I haven't had any problems with anything yet. I do want to change the tranny fluid though. Anything i should be looking out for with 80,000 miles?? Thanks Scotty--your the best
Changed the MAF sensor in my 00 Maxima. Didn't come out as easy as it did in this Toyota, I had to take off the entire air intake duct off. They are a faulty part on Maximas but it was kind of my fault since I used a K&N filter with oil on it. Now I just just use cheap Motomaster air filters.
@7477238 Yep, that oil ruins the hot wires inside the sensors. I advise using them in modern MAF equipped vehicles (they are fine for old carburetored stuff, I have one on my old motorcycle.) Scotty
Scotty have you ever done a diagnostics for a Lexus MAF; the Big Debate on Lexus Forums is on the K&N "lightly oiled" air filters as in are they bad for the Lexus MAF?
Hopefully you have some type of volt-meter check procedure for the Lexus MAF, and hopefully for the I.A.C. as well, Internal Air Control Valve. The MPG Lexus Forum is HUGE, Best silver bullet I've found including for these 2 serviced components I.E.'silver bullet key'was the ECUmain water Temp Sensor. A Big MPGperformanceFactor
Scotty: You are the best thing on the internet, even better than Drudge. I really appreciate your videos. I am now making my daughter watch them. I doubt she will ever did much under the hood but she will have a better understanding of what happens there and will be better able to communicate with her mechanic.
Just as Scotty mentioned; when oilled properly and at the right interval your K&N should be fine, however.... Some MAF sensors go bad very soon after an oil based filter is used. This is caused by tiny oil deposits on the sensor coming from the filter. I own a high powered TDI which also uses a MAF sensor and these definitely go bad using oil based filters. These filters won't make much difference in a TDI so using a stock filter does the job as well Hope this helps a bit in your choice ;-)
hey ,scotty.just replaced a motor on my 95 dodge stealth..did it on my own put the tranny back on and had a little trouble and heard a little crack when bolting it on..started it up and it wont drive or reverse..could it be that the torque converter wasnt all the way in?
scotty, is a MAF sensor a part you only buy from dealer, or can i pick one up from napa or some other auto part store. also, does it matter if its aftermarket, or not, because often aftermarket is cheaper... thanks
@Ji99i3 I'm always leary of aftermarket and junk yard parts in most cases. But, many good auto parts stores sell the factory sensors, just at a lower price, or rebuilt units. Scotty
Hi Scotty! Great video once again! When you say "runs poorly", what symptoms are you describing? I have a 99 Taurus (see my vids) that, once it gets hot, it hesitates and "jerks" from a dead stop, almost like it wants to stall but only thru 1st gear. Has plenty of smooth power beyond that. I replaced the Diff pres Switch, TPS, cleaned the MAF sensor with "tuner cleaner" and also changed the trans filter & fluid. The car has 197k on a V6 Duratec 24V engine. No engine light on. Please help?! TY
@AllThingzVideo i had a ford escort that would do that if i let the oil go too long and if i had platinum spark plugs in it (i was young and dumb and wanted more power from a 4 banger) from what i understand is that the plugs were getting oil fouled and made it run like crap because when i replaced the plugs and change the oil it ran perfect so now i only but the right kind of plugs and dont let my oil go over
@TAGZ4200 Thanks for the input but this engine is designed to run on Platinum plugs from he factory and I have changed the plugs and wires and I also change my oil every 5000 miles without fail. This is either transmission or "sensor" related in my opinion. Trouble is, I dont want to keep changing expensive parts in the hopes of finding the root cause to the problem. Its discouraging at best... :\
@AllThingzVideo well that was my 2 cents im sorry it didn't help if i cant think of anything else ill let you know btw if you go to scottys website you can email him i did that yesterday and i got a very very fast response from him maybe try that if he dosent get back to you here
@TAGZ4200 Hey I really appreciate you taking the time to offer input! most people dont! I did as you suggested and went to Scotty's website and sent him an email. I cant wait to see what he recommends! After all, we're all in this together right? LOL...Thanks again!
@AllThingzVideo oh ya i mean who can afford to take there car to the mechanic anymore? and shit half the time all he is going to do is check the same shit we do so why pay someone 70$ an hour (that's what they charge here ) to do the same basic stuff we can . eg. i got a quote for a head gasket on my car guy wanted 750$ i did it in 6hours and bought the torque wrench gaskets and all were 300$ and 100$ was the wrench you cant beat that so i saved 450$ and had it back faster then they would
@AllThingzVideo Yes, your car could be acting up like that from a bad MAF sensor, BUT normally it would then do so in all gears. Get a good mechanic to watch the raw data and mode 6 data on his computer hooked up to your car, as a bad MAF sensor would show bad data on the screen. It may or may not have anything to do with it though. Scotty
@titan2654 could be a leak somewhere. i did a head gasket on a Camry and forgot to tighten the egr valve and the idle was high as shit. try looking for something that u may have not tighten correctly.
@titan2654 tons of things can do that, and if you changed it with a used junk yard engine, it could even be a bad engine. Start by compression testing the "new" engine and if it's low, the engine is no good. Scotty
Hello there yet again Mr. Kilmer. I have yet another question for my 98 Blazer. I got my HUB's replaced last time, and thank god that's all what my ABS issue was, one of the sensors were going, so I figured just to have both changed out. So, this time, my EVAP (P0440) is going off. I took it to a shop and was told to replace the EVAP Canister Purge Control Valve, that I bought from a local dealer and replaced myself today. Was just wondering if you think it may be something else on top of that.
@PicAFlic Evap codes are Mothers to fix. They are computer driven complex systems. Sometimes that valve will fix that code, sometimes not. You may as well try there, any further analysis would require an ace mechanic working on it. Scotty
@imautuber444 I used to, but CBS ran out of money. The internet is much better anyway, you can tell the truth and no one can do anything to stop you from doing it, like on TV. Scotty
@mike797 Fram used to make great filters but they've been bought out years ago, and are just another corporate business in search of profit. I try to get oem factory filters whenever possible. They cost more, but work much better. Scotty
@scottykilmer Uh, Scotty I hate to bust your bubble but Honeywell which now owns Fram, Autolite, Bendix, etc also makes a very large percentage of the factory (OEM) filters for the domestic manufacturers. Approximate numbers just for AC Delco alone are 50% of their oil filters come off Honeywell lines. I have been in these factorys and seen this with my own eyes. In fact Fram was the company who came out with the anti drain back valve in oil filters for AC. I can prove these claims easily.
@cfaulc They may be awesome in the factory, but try opening up a Fram air filter box sometime and look at it and tell me if that FOAM seal is something you'd trust in your airbox. I don't. Not after the first time I used it and it literally peeled off when i went to check it three months later. I spent a whopping $2 more at O Reilly's for a Motorcraft air filter. It has a rubber seal and I've never had a problem with it. Fram oil filters might be better quality, but the air filters? Lulz...
@samuraiinblack Fram also makes a fair percentage of OEM air filters to. The difference is that they have to use the paper for the filter with the micron rating the automobile manufacturer wants also the screen type AND rubber rim. As far as the Fram air filter I have NEVER had a problem using them in my shop. Thats not to say you can't find a bad one because you can with any brand. You would be very very suprised to see what Honeywell/Fram does make for everybody.
Good tips and instructions as always! gotta love the "4-10" horse power gain they put on the cleaner can. people will think its adding horse power while in reality its just givingback a few you lost!
@shadowhunter45s You MUST use a cleaner that's made just for mass airflow sensors, don't use carb cleaner. MAF cleaner has to completely evaporate and leave no residue, carb spray leaves residue. Scotty
