James Boswell was the constant companion and chronicler of Samuel Johnson. Back then, saying "I am lost without my Boswell," was like saying "I am lost without my Dr. Watson," today.
In regard to Holmes's pipe choice, as commented below, he had a briar, and was often cited as smoking a long stem cherry wood for his milder moods, but a grey clay pipe for his darker more agitated moments. These were most likely churchwardens, but he is very likely to have had a smaller more portable pipe for his dalliances.
I commend your video, however, i feel you have drawn an erroneous conclusion from your interpretation of this book. It is most likely that Holmes was referring to Watson as 'his Boswell' in deference to the well known Scottish biographer James Boswell 9th laird of Auchinleck. It is with this regard that Holmes was referring to Watson; in the manner of a biographer, commenting on Watson's studious transcription of his cases.
Great video. The rain is very relaxing. I have been reading Sherlock Holmes as well, and I have seen the use of a black clay pipe more than once, and I have also seen the use of a "briar." The only tobacco references I have noticed so far were "black shag" tobacco and Holmes' morning smokes, which consists of dottle and leftovers from the pipes of the previous day. Interesting?
Very interesting. As for the calabash theory, despite the films, it is unlikely Holmes would have smoked a calabash as he like strong, even harsh, tobaccos and the strong cooling and mellowing effect of calabash would have defeated such a practice. Great video!
Very enjoyable video, and oddly enough I had just watched Sherlock Holmes' movie "Scandal in Bohemia" 5 minutes ago, and noticed the very same statement and paused and played it again to verify I had heard correctly. I laughed and went to Boswells site to order some raspberry cream tobacco... LOL Cheers!
William Gillette can be held responsable for the Calabash - he wrote a play and in it Holmes smoked a calabash.. That was used as the bases for the Rathbone film 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'.. I like your style but have to really a Boswell surely a Dunhill... Great video mate.. Cheers, Tim
elementary my dear Anthony,,,sherlock holmes is one of the main reasons i started pipe smoking as i was greatly affected by the cartoon series when i was a kid,,however i was affected by the calabash the most but sure left to know tht he prefered english/balkan blends
Enjoyed the video. I am currently reading the complete collection of Sherlock Holmes and was racking my brain on what pipe he smoked. I like your take!!

"I am lost without my Boswell."
James Boswell (1740-1795) famously chronicled the life of Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) and is credited with inventing the modern art of biography.
He was referring to Watson's writing of the pairs adventures.

That's a very nice Boswell pipe you got there, it's the most beautiful pipe i have ever seen made by him.
