The retard call just informs the pilots that the thrust ie power - is still there and it "reminds" the pilots that they need to reduce thrust before or at touchdown. You do not have to retard the levers at this time - I have done before and after the call it depends on the conditions of the day. Today I flew an airbus and "retarded" ie reduced power before it even had chance to tell me to retard the thrust levers ! Hope this helps regards flyinga320
@rpg481, in plain English (or should that be 'plane' English lol) I believe it basically means 'you are about to touch down and turn the engines off'!
im a air cadet was was just wondering that if i take my 3822 will i be aloud in the cockpit. i can use it at air-shows to get into VIP areas and most planes that public arnt aloud in. thanks in advance and im asking because im going to new york and Amsterdam in august
So the cabin crew tell you to turn of you cameras and ds of yet the pilot doest give a hoot when your recording this video. They should make up there minds
That was one of the best videos i have seen of a plane landing it was a view i have never seen before of Gatwick thanks for that and lets have some more
Best cockpit vid i've seen yet, great steady camera work, gives a real insight.....curious as to what the computer says 3 times around 1 min 50 sec....sounds like retire or something..
They use autopilot to align the aircraft with the runway. Now, if they use autoland that means the aircraft will land by itself, autopilot will land it. They usually disconnect the autopilot at around 500 feet and land manually.
pilots will normally fly the ILS and around 10dme on average will disconnect the autopilot, flying the aircraft manually. Following the Flight Directors.
It is also likely that on the manual approach and visibility is good, the flight directors will be taken off, and the aircraft will be landed using visual flight rules.
As stated, a pilot could take off the autopilot anytime he wanted.
the GPWS is saying retard, its saying retard because it means for the captain or co-pilot whoevers landing the aircraft for them to throttle back completely for touchdown
hehe yeah parking ..train railway ... sometimes i stay after work to se like they landing ...:) this is samll machine i think ...respect 4 all pilots !! piss to alll ignorants hehe!
Ah man!I miss England! =(Went to England last year, stayed at East Sussex,Horsham. I flew with Sterling, they dont exist anymore(dont remember why)and I remember landing at this airport.
haha, i know, funny, but it's to tell them to start breaking. Just in case they forgot to stop the aircraft. Easy mistake, i always forget to break when i land, and it's keeps on calling me a retard.
It's not to do with braking at all, it means move thrust levers to idle for the flare and touchdown. They don't need to be reminded to brake, autobrake will already be set if needed as part of the landing checklist.
nice vid!!!... uhmmm I would like to know something... does somebody know what's the li'l sound (like a telephone ring) that all Airbus make when they approach??
If you're talking about the sound at 35 seconds in. Its the Autopilot disengaging. Once they have gear down and flaps set, if they can see the runway they usually disengage it to land it manually.
bit of a random question,,,,,,does anyone know what determines which runway would be used as the active one ie, at london gatwick 26L or 8R is it to do with weather or just a certain time they switch over. also in the vid it looked liked they turned onto the other runway so does that get used as a taxi way when it is in active????
From an atc perspective there are a number of things to take into account with regards to the runway in use. the main one being the wind - a/c prefer to land into the wind, and take off into it, all to do with principles of flight. Not an aerodrome controller so cant really comment with regards to the use of the runway - but I cant see it being used as a taxiway. Mainly because the pilots will have a book detailing the landing procedures and taxiways at each aerodrome.
Retard is 'airbus's' term and instructions for the crew to push the thrust levers to idle. The GPWS at the required height will configure the warning to retard the engines during the flare.
its an A319, look at the tags, thats mainly what easyjet operate, and u cant just look at the flight deck and say its an A320, cos the A318 A319 A320 and A321 all have the same cockpits!
You're right. I said A320 just to inform it's not a 747 as buukyak reported. The correct anwer without knowing it's an EasyJet should be that it's a A318/19/20/21 family airplane. Thanks for the info!

No wait..that must be the crap flightsim I played..LOL. Yep - it does mean retard the throttles to idle on the whole..although some texts do explain this differently.

"Retard" means to 'pull back on the flight stick'...as in "pull up". It doesn't mean retard as in thrust to idle. Because some times they come in on idle power anyway - so that doesn't make sense to say this.
Sorry you're wrong. Retard means to close thrust levers=idle thrust. It's a reminder not an order. No jet aircraft ever (to my knowledge) approaches at flight idle. With high lift devices and the resultant drag a fair amount of thrust is needed to maintain speed whilst keeping it on a stable trajectory (typically 3 degrees). In an A319 (this video) around 50%(N1) thrust is required.
I'm an airline pilot with over 10 years experience on jets so this isn't rubbish gleaned from flight sim! Cheers!
