  • dong ross invented swagger....and yes i said dong.

  • antoine dufour=better

  • @CoryLottMusic

Just because you like the tuning/type of guitar better in Antoine Dufour's cover doesn't mean the technique is better...

  • @phlipper007 I could be wrong, but I don't think he said anything about the technique or the tuning or guitar. MAYBE, just maybe, he has an opinion and shared it on the internet.

  • I know this track is getting on in years, but can't beleive that it's only got 139ks worth of hits on Youtube. This guy is the daddy when it comes to this type of music. Even Antoine Dufour and Andy McKee look up to him. Awesome track, awesome playing skills. This track, the skills displayed and Don Ross deserve more.

  • Not even Soul Train couldn't hold a candle to the grooviness of Don Ross.

  • Okay so that actual tuning is G# D# G# B F# C#

  • @TonesOfYou damn.

  • Comment removed

  • Just for the record if people think this is lack of technique try playing it like he does..

It's probably one of the most difficult peices i've ever happened upon.

  • Go Hagrid!

  • Don Ross is my hero not only for his fucking awesome beard but i have'nt heard a peice of music by him that i did'nt like.

  • funky =]

  • nice work but dofurs drac and friends sound a bit nicer

  • this is a real guitar player!!! nice work!!!

  • Fuckin' beast :D

  • Very Impressive!

  • Everyone is so obsessed with technique nowadays. Who cares about the level of difficulty. Just enjoy the music for what it is.

  • technique just helps you make the music. but i agree. when people get to obsessed with technique only it usually just turns tobloody speed which can be good but its the simple things that are amazing alot of times :)

  • @jonathanreeves18 well its not that we dont enjoy the music without nowing the difficulties but you can appreciate it more becuz u know how much practise and dedication is spend on a 3min. piece it makes it all so much better to listen to just knowing that

  • @jonathanreeves18 Musician intend to break rules in your words OBSESSED . If they didnt break the rules , there'll be only Cmaj key signature . and pop , blues , jazz , etc will not exist .

  • @azimlott You are not making any sense. What on earth does technique have to do with the key a piece of music is in. What does technique have to do with a particular style of music. Technique is technique.

  • @jonathanreeves18 same concept . you must observe music in other points of view . it doesnt mean u are wrong . technique is technique and yes music is for entertainment purposes .

  • idiot

  • The tuning (from low to high) is G#F#A#BF#C#.

  • whitch tuning ist it? thanks!

  • Baritone guitar?

  • @michdudeada toallyyy, a very large one in fact.. probably 30.4 inches

  • Cool

  • nice

  • I thought he was of Mik'maq Descent.

    Not To Sure.

  • Yeah, he is.

  • he's a Mik'maq? Native American?

  • I am completely positive his father is Scottish but I'm not sure of his mother.

  • Funk to the max. I like the poor quality sound. It actually makes it sound cooler if thats even possible

Can't wait when he comes to CA

  • Ah man, I know what your saying. It almost sounds like a synth or something. Crazy. O.o

  • This actually sounds quite a bit like Afraid To Dance.

    Don Ross is amazing.

  • I have to say what a smooth Funky Bass Song!

  • Honestly, I love both Antoine's and Don Ross's original versions. They are both so awesome!

  • has anyone heard antione dufores version of this song?

  • he does part one this is a different dong completely

  • DONG!!?!? XD

  • song!! ahaha

  • Where's part one?!?! =/

  • His daughter was the inspiration for the name. She's as quirky as he is. She told him to name it after one of those movie monsters, but as if that monster had a children's television show.

  • shit... i cant find this song on better quality..

    :S

  • sounds like a bass guitar, hella cool.

  • dude,

    dracula was on funky mofo!

  • I don't think this song is Dracula approved

  • DROP IT DOWN TO Z!!!

    :-D

  • OMG D:

  • sounds v like the first part

  • Did he play Part 1 himself sometime on video? Is it available somwehere?

  • the bass in this song sounds almost like seinfeld, how low is this guys guitar tuned down to ?

  • it's a baritone guitar

  • and what is the difference? can you tune it lower tyhan a normal guitar?

  • you can play this song with the tuning DADGCE

  • i dont think thats the tuning..way lower...

  • yh sorry it is for this recording allthough that is an alternate tuning you can use

  • the tuning on this version is G#F#A#BF#C#

  • I think it's a baritone guitar - can be tuned lower. It's tuned C-G-C-F-Bflat-D (according to Antoine Dufour, anyhoo).

  • But his a diffrent song, and he changed it so it may be diffrent and this is number 2 not 1

  • man you can tune a regular guitar in C, i think with a baritone you can reach even a G with the sixth open string, correct me if i am wrong

  • You can tune your low E to B with light gauge strings:)

I would, I did it when learning Klimbim, wasn't that floppy either

  • yeah i know, when you tune a regular gauge on B, you can play, but i think you lose a lot of volume because of the reduced tension. Isn`t that true?

  • antoines verion is part one this is part two which is G#F#A#BF#C# (baritone)

  • antoine's cover of part one was excellent!!! but it lookd like he put in alotta effort. Don plays this effortlessly! thats crazy!

  • Don plays this effortlessly because HE composed this songs,IMHO :P

  • this guy uses something like 120 plus tuning s so ..uhhmm yeah amazing..and crazy canadian...

  • Hes Canadian?

  • man, i think the E string is tuned down too like...A or something, that's friggin low!

sounds sick though, hope i get to see him live sometime :)

  • Pretty sure its C

  • He is using a baritone guitar. Standard tuning for a baritone is typically a fourth or a fifth below a normal guitar. The tuning Don is using here is G#F#A#BF#C#

  • even lower

    the tuning is G#F#A#BF#C#

  • lol metal headz...plz fuck off out of this site for starters../spit ..u are right. same amount of practice is needed for very technical metal shit.. but what u don't..and never will understand is acoustic is MUCH harder to get a clean sound out of. like alot..

  • dude, me being a metal head, I take offense to that. I love acoustic. I love metal. Acoustic is based all about the creativity of the player, asd well as metal. My dream is to play on the Cadny Rat crew. But I still love to shred.

    Godbless,

    -Rezzy

  • yeah so do I. I listen to a lot of hardcore metalcore grindcore music and I still enjoy listening to acoustic and blues kinda more "sociable" music

  • how dumb are you? 'cause your post here sure does lend credibility towards your INTERNET stupidity...but i wonder how dumb you are in real life. hmm...

  • well first of all they are two completely different styles, and with that there come different technique used to play within the genre. So why would you compare two completely different styles? I respect acoustic players like these guys, because they are amazing. But i do enjoy metal as well. So i guess it just comes from actually knowing a little about music huh.

  • you're the man Don. i liked the story behind the name of this song. haha

you and Andy definately need to come back to Seattle soon. you put on a great show in January and i know your fans would LOVE to see you again. especially me and my friends. see you soon i hope!

  • damn thats some low tuning...bravo

  • Don Ross is the best

  • Don Ross Grooviest acoustic guitarist!

  • This is part 2, dip.

  • part 1 is part 1, part 2 ia part 2 dummy, antoine did HIS part 1 COVER...

  • i do like this version better, just because its don ross playing his own song :) Ive heard don ross play dracula and friends part 1, and i have to say that antoine dufour def puts his own spins on the song because the way don plays it is a lot more.....wholesomeful....yea i guess thats the word, just more feeling to it.

  • Don Ross wrote both but Antoine puts his own unique spin on DF 1

  • so is dufors part one like his own take on the song or what? cuz i havent heard Ross's version of #1

  • anyone knows what year is this video?

  • i dont think ppl should be allowed to listen to music untill they realise that it is entierly opinionated. when so many guitarists have a similar skill level in the same style. the "better" player is only decided through oppinion !

  • X2 finaly someone else whoknows what their talking about

  • well you can say its opinionated, but my opinion is that musicians who are trained in theory (such as don ross) can appreciate and write "better" music

  • do you know how long it takes some musicians like Robb Flynn from Machinehead to learn modes, scales etc. heavy metal music isn't just something you pick up, it takes devotion, years of practice and learning.

  • who said metal? i was talking about don ross, and how musicians who know theory can write and appreciate music more. i never said anything about metal being easy or anything

  • lol, i was just saying that the same amount of effort goes into learning most other forms of music aswell, only used metal as an example,so they appreciate the music just as much even if they are not trained in theory. infact i believe if you are self taught there is more emotion in the music because your playing what feels right, not what is deemed right by some lecturer guy at a music school.

  • think what you want, obviously nothing i can say will change your mind. All i want to say is music is not as abstract as people think.

  • Prime example of how knowing the theory isn't always best. Guitarist Michaelangelo Batio knows a simmilar amount of theory as Don Ross, just in a differant area of music, John Petrucci knows less than Batio in the same area of music yet Petrucci's music generaly out-classes Batios for emotion, rythmn and style.... just not in speed.

  • dufours version is a completely different song.... this song is awesome

  • Dufour plays Dracula and Friends Part 1, its a different song.

  • Yeah, but Dracula and Friends Part 1 is composed by Don too.

  • Of course, but Dufour's cover is of Part 1

  • Wow!

    Awesome!

  • You have to undersatnd Chet atkins made the finger style more prominent, from there you got Larry and Emmauneal C.G.P and then Don Ross, They all got differetn style of plying but definitley have been influence by one another just liek how Mckee and DarfouR AND SOME OF US have been on the sreets buit cant get any videos done or record label so yeah. Even Mckee adn Darfour have named Emmanuel , Ross and others as thier "INFLUENCE"

  • It's DUFOUR. You kept making me think of the Sudanese city.

  • yeah lol darfour with all the problems;)

  • awesome song and video... can anyone get don ross playing dracula and friends part 1?

  • Don is inspirational guitarist. I think more people know about Tommy and his style appeals to more people. But Don has inspired guitarists such as Antoin Dufour, Andy Mckee and Erick Turnbull, all of which have finished at least top 3 in Canadian FIngerstyle competition and Andy also in the Winfield Competition. Don is also the only 2-time winner of the Winfield Competition, the most prestigious fingerstyle competition

  • you raise an interesting point. Tommy Emmanuel is a genious, but Don Ross is also incredible. They would make a kick ass duet that for sure. I would still rate Tommy slightly higher though

  • this makes me feel like a badass . this song haha

  • Khryspy, the tunning is G#F#A#BF#C# on a baritone guitar... Yeah, G sharp! That's mighty low... You probably can't get all the way down there without a guitar with a longer scale... You can get all his tunnings at gobyfish.com, his official site. Enjoy!

  • Wot tuning is it cus im sur that aint standard tuning a few tones lower DADGAD or drop d maybe ?? :s

  • to cachame and Khryspy: Perhaps look at the video on here with Sam Kinison explaining to Arsenio Hall that everyone has a colour in the rainbow. Hopefully that should settle a way of quantifying each player's worth/appeal. Don good. Tommy good. Is music about competition?

    :)

  • yeah tommy emmanuel is a bit better but its hard to compare

  • u wrong about that... the best fingerstyle guitarist has to be Tommy Emmanuel.

  • I saw an ad in our newspaper that said "legendary fingerstyle guitarist Don Ross comes to town". I didn't know anything about him but being a guitarist myself a bought tickets for 20 bucks and in 2 hours I left with my jaw dragging, my pants wet, and my mind absolutly warped. Don Ross is the greatest fingerstyle guitarist in the world, no question about it.

  • his playing is very unique but y with all the crazy tunning

  • The only way to play the composition is with that tuning, by tuning differently you get a whole new set of compositional possibilites impossible before.

  • It's just standard tuning tuned one tritone down, I think...

  • Don recently acquired a baritone guitar which I believe he is using here. Also he has posted his tunings on the fretcetera website.

  • Wanna know whay this guy is cool... because he is. Don Ross Rocks.

  • excellent songwriter.

    emotional and anything else...

    : ) C

  • he's gooot

  • I love it!

  • I saw Don Ross live; it was amazing. This guy is crazy on the acoustic. One of the best.
