It seems that people like you have such a miserable life that can only see what is bad (according to their bitter opinion) in anything they hear or see. Someone happier would enjoy, as most here do, the enormous artistry of this incredible artist. And no, besides the incredibly high notes we also enjoy something you don't seem to notice, Damrau's innate musicality. Better your life and hear this again, perhaps you might see something good in it then.
What in my comment revealed that I had such a "miserable life" that I can only "see what is bad in anything that I hear or see?" Just because I cannot find the musicality in one piece does not mean that I am incapable of enjoying any music at all, and certainly does not speak for the happiness of my life. Before you base such grand assumptions off of one YouTube comment, why don't you attempt to respect it regardless of whether or not it reflects your own opinion.
Diana Damrau at her best! Brava! brava diva! She is simply one of the most captivating all-around operatic performers around today. And Salieri's music here is delightful. A treat!
@xr1983kr True--I also REALLY enjoy Salieri's "Quando piu irate freme", especially Diana's studio version, with her electrifying coloratura pyrotechnics and played at breakneck speed by Le Cercle d'Harmonie. Fun!
I can't get enough of this incredible actress-singer, how lucky we are to have her! Thank you Coloraturafan for posting this, you've made the day of many of us!
(X. Recitativo e aria) Numi, respiro!
the passage being a cadenza in an opera which had not been performed since the premiere (1788), she could have improvised whatever that ends up on the right note...
does the technique really matter, so long as the sound is good? in all her performances her sound is amazing, so whatever it is she may be doing wrong, it's obviously working for her, anyway, i dont care about technique. im a composer, and the only thing i hear is a great composition by an unrecognised talent
Techniques is everything. It not only assures security in what ever your are singing, but it also helps with longevity, take Dessay for example, she got nodes due to bad technique in her high, and now she can't sing above an E-flat.
Technique is something that people learn differently. I don't think anyone can say whether or not she has technique, but from a personal opinion, I would say she has stunning technique. The amount she moves on stage shows that. In fact, in everything I've seen her in, she's been bounding around and always produces a stunning sound.
. I'm going to assume that you have either studied voice for a short period of time, or took lessons from a person trained in the french school of singing. Their is a difference between being popular(Anna Netrebko for instance), and actually having substantial talent and ability. Damrau is regarded as one of the most technically sound singers by the entire opera world, are you trying to say that you know more then every other person in the opera world?? You are a fool, and an idiot. Don't talk
This performance is stunning, and technically exquisite. She sings with such ease and brilliance. Her technique is absolutely amazing, and her voice is breath taking.
this is absolutely amazing and she is the perfect person for this role. and when she goes up to the high g u cant even see how hard shes trying on her face Pavarotti had a similar quality.
There are some things I consider when evaluating an aria. In order of importance: 1. Does it give an appropriate idea about the characters state of mind? 2. Is it interesting? 3. Is it beautiful? 4. Is it memorable? The answer two all four is a clear 'yes' to me. I've probably listened to it couple of hundred times and I still like it. PS Delightful and elegant are the main qualities I look for in music, I spit on that "real art" whatever that is supposed to be. Empty words nothing more.
You sound like a pompous know nothing, insulting the aria and performance does not make you seem intelligent. It does the very opposite, and you now appear incredibly stupid and childish. Congratulations, on making yourself look like a complete ass. Want a gold star??
This is the most difficult Coloratur Aria, a Soprano can sing. Because this Aria the Opera wasnt performt since 1777. Only Franziska Dorothea Lebrun Danzi (1756-1791) coult sing this part. Well Mozart's concert aria "Popoli di Tessaglia" has 2 high Gs and if it's not more difficult it's just as diffcult as this aria. I'd to hear Diana perfoming it.
I can not imagine a role that she can not suit herself!!!She is an amazing actress, I do not have to mention the voice. She is the best whatever she sings!!!She makes the characther real...
what`s the name of 2.50 to 2.54, 3.25 to 3.52 ,5.40 to 6.04,.6.44 to the end...singing? Would she know at that moment she was becoming a Sacred Monster?
No, not yet. She's focused mainly on Mozart, Salieri, and R. Strauss so far. But she's starting to reach into Bel Canton, and maybe one day we'll get to hear her sing Lakme. Who knows? A recording of the Bell Song might exist out there but has not been published yet.
i just want to say that Diana is one opera-singer who is very talented. Its absolutely incredible that opera female singers have to go soo high with their voices.
And please people! Stop analyzing a woman every time u see one if she is f**kable, ugly or fat & so on.
Think before u speak and ask yourselves: was Pavarotti not fat?(extremely) and on top of that was he not really sweatty and dirty & looked like he smelled really bad? + he didnt need to reach the high notes!
didn't need to reach the high notes, ishtarqueen? um, hello! he was called king of the high c's for his performance in le fille de regiment! a high c is HIGH HIGH HIGH! and he did it with absolute ease and perfection. how much do you know about opera??
yes, but pavarotti wasn't singing in the "bel canto" era. he was a modern singer. no one would say today that a c isn't high. PARTICULARLY for pavarotti's fach. and in my research i've done in music history classes and vocal lit and ped, i've never heard of a man who can sing a d being considered a baritone. although there are some baritones who CAN hit d's doesn't mean that you HAVE to be able to hit e's to be a tenor.....
Andrea Nozzari who originated many Rossini roles such as Otello, was considered a baritone because of his tessitura and going only to high D. And basically his tessitura is that of a lirico-spinto. I am a lirico-spinto with bel canto technique and I tell you, a high C is not high UNLESS you are screaming your head off in chest voice which is what many modern tenors do.
Oh my. There are tons of professional baritones who can sing D and higher. Leonard Warren was said to have had such an easy high C, he would occasionally lilt one off (no warming up) if he was in a good mood. But of course he was one of the greatest.. But really, I think you have to keep in mind that voice classifications are just that, frames we have put voices into when in fact they stretch along a wide continuum of both range and timbre. They are not bracketed into distinct groups.
Is she fat? Isn't she? But who cares!? She is a singer (a wonderful one), not a top model... I have to listen to her voice, that's all. Was Pavarotti thin? I really don't think so... meravigliosa Diana, soprano e attrice straordinaria.
One question for a dummy like me!! I notice a slight change in timbre on that high F# (3:45)... is this natural in those high notes or is she using her whistle register... or even vocalizing??
Why are people saying she looks fat? She sounds absolutely divine and I think she looks pretty good too! Do we live in such a twisted society that a woman has to be sickly in order to have a pretty body?
I saw too on the other page that people were calling her fat which is THE FARTHEST thing from the truth. And I agree with you that how sick our society has gotten that anorexic opera singers are now in vogue. And even more sad is that such a stunningly amazing performance by this woman deserves a big BRAVA, not an ounce of critique on body weight, something so stupid. And in any case, my two cents are, she looks amazing.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
hehheheh maybe... ilook the esthaetics... and she look fat for me, but the rest, the singing, the pitch, her intterpretation of the music, everything is perfect, but she looks fat... what can i do????? cry?no...
i want to have a new dress made, in which she does not look fat.... sorry nerd if you didn't like my comment.... i am a pro found person hehehhehehehe fashion designer here, sorry hehhehehehheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Oh, does she now? Well, that's the end of her career then: the critic with the elegant name of "nicosupersex" finds her curves disagreeable. Please limit your comments to something people might actually care about.
it's amazing how people can be offended by a stupid text, hehehehehehehhe, i said: "she LOOKS fat, i didn't say she WAS actually fat, i know how perfect she isand cotumes are very important in an opera, at least they are for people like me, who see the opera as an integral art....
i'm sure that all those who complain about my comment are a bunch of fat massive gringos, blond and tasteless... hehehehehehehehehehhe
I realise that and you are of course entitled to your opinion. I just don't think opera is the right place to bring looks into the equation, as interpretation is done through voice and acting. It's not, for instance, like "normal" films where the interpreters are generally cast to look like their character. And re the race and weight of the "complainers", what a peculiar notion. I am slim and coloured - does this change your opinion of my complaint?!
Well I don't agree with that entirely. There are many singers who are not cast because they do not fit a role visually and I think that's good. Opera is a theatrical art; yes, singing first, of course, but the other elements need to be there to generally have a good acclaim, and the visual presentation of the performer is definitely up there on the list.
You do have a point. There have been occasions in the past where the performer didn't bear the slightest phyical resemblance to the character, and it's uncomfortable to look at. However, because can be so difficult to find certain voicetypes I think in opera it should be permitted not to look on a few pounds more or less and though every effort should be made to get the visuals right, voice I think should take precedence. Bruennhilde being case in point...
Good God, if she's fat then how would you call ... Well, I don't really want to insult anyone so I will not offer examples of people who are REALLY fat. Damrau is about perfect - at least according to MY taste in women.
The funny thing is in case se happened to be really thin some people would be complaining about that. I've seen it happen with other artists.
Ive been trying to find the answer to this on the internet but i cant find it. Maybe some youtube surfer can help me. Around where does a soprano's chest voice switch into head voice? I think its about around a C5 to an E5. Just curious if anybody can give me an answer.
well, if you know about high chest singing ('belting') dramatic sopranos/mezzos, such as whitney, mariah, deborah cox, sing F's & G's in the 5th octave in chest, Patti LaBelle is celbrated for her C6 in chest! rember that dramtic sopranos also possess a middle register which is actually between chest & head, its a fairly narrow area but Jazz singer Rachaell Ferrell actually hits & sustains a Eb-5 in middle! but yes, for a mezzo/altos into head is around C5,Cecilia Bartoli & Vivica Genaux hit C6!
This is such a beautiful piece and diana damrau's light but powerful voice just makes it perfect. Its so beautiful, there's just no words to descibe it.
with perhaps lower notes than Edita, richer than Dessay's, & as dark as sills, & with G's more silvery, shinier, yet as intense as Edita's, stronger & more bold reminiscent of sills, and void of going nasal, too tight/spreading, or white sounding top register that's brilliant & graceful as Dessay's which actually echoes Sutherland's epic presence of flickering staccatos, & electrifying agility, & roundness of body/core of middle register, & powerful/full-bodied strikingly ringing top roulades!
the timbres/tonalities/texture/range of the three greatest lyric-coloraturas of all time BEVERLY SILLS + EDITA GRUBEROVA + NATALIE DESSAY come to mind, when u analytically behold the astonishing voice of Damrau!
A lot of people don't know but in this opera, Europa (played by Damrau obviously) goes up to a high "G," a whole-step higher than the infamous "Der Holle Rache" sung by the Queen of the Night in Mozart's "Magic Flute." Just found it interesting.
This is just so beautiful. There is something special about Diana Damrau's vebrato that just gives me chills, especially in her high head register. Her voice is truely one of a kind.
I've got a few questions for those really smart Damrau fans. How high does damrau's head voice go. I know the high G is in whistle register but I never really though that much about the high end of her head voice. Also does anyone know how tall she is? I know this is a pointless question but she seems really tall to me. Im really tall too so it kind of makes me feel good that a tall girl can make it in opera (im a wee bit over 6ft) The answers to these questions would be really apriciated.
She has already reached an Ab6, in the end of her performance of "Glitter And Be Gay", which you can find here on Youtube. That may give you an idea of her range. About the second question, no idea.
first of all, i wish to clear-up to the best of my knowledge, as far as range goes if u are classically trained, you would know that the flageolet (or whistle) register is technically not permitted in classical singing, 'cuz u are using the edges or false-cords, clearly established in larynx physiology, hence the distinct difference between a proper G6 like Damrau's & a 'secular'/popular singer-soprano like Mariah Carey, albeit hitting the note, but airy/squealish/weak wit no amplifation!
to your second question, somehting interesting for you to note is that statiscally most light/coloratura sopranos , Sumi Jo, Natalie Dessay (barely 5'0"], Edita Gruberovam Kathleen Battle, Patricia Ciofi, etc. are of small stature, ironically the height of singer has mildly reflected their register, most mezzos are taller, notable exception were Joan Sutherland & Mezzo Marilyn Horne, ironically she was trained as a mezzo at first; cuz most taller sopranos tend 2 sound fuller: slightly mezzoish!
I know what u mean. But im not a typically shaped person. Although im about 6ft I am very (and believe me VERY) high waisted, which I like. My chest in not very wide either, I more have a very small chest (like that of a shorter woman) and my neck is not very large. If you heard my voice it is very light and not heavy. My teacher has looked at my face and identified that my resonance cavities are small which has to do that from my chest up I am very small(so to say)n my legs are most of my body.
so beautiful, can listen one milion times... :) but what's that f*****g telephone call in the background (6:23-), am I the only one listening? :(((

According to the newspapers she completely stole the show from no other than Deborah Voigt as Zerbinetta in Ariadne at the Met.

Just when I think Diana has done everything she can to blow me away, she has another unbelievable song up her sleeve!
Does anyone know if she has done the role of Lakme?
eeli1 3 years ago 4
No, not yet. She's focused mainly on Mozart, Salieri, and R. Strauss so far. But she's starting to reach into Bel Canton, and maybe one day we'll get to hear her sing Lakme. Who knows? A recording of the Bell Song might exist out there but has not been published yet.

There is a video of her bell song now!

i just want to say that Diana is one opera-singer who is very talented.
IshtarQueen 3 years ago
didn't need to reach the high notes, ishtarqueen? um, hello! he was called king of the high c's for his performance in le fille de regiment! a high c is HIGH HIGH HIGH! and he did it with absolute ease and perfection. how much do you know about opera??
tiernan87 3 years ago
A high C is high if you are a bass, most tenors in the bel canto era had high Eb's and E's. Those that had "only" a D were considered baritones!
agnellodei 3 years ago
yes, but pavarotti wasn't singing in the "bel canto" era. he was a modern singer. no one would say today that a c isn't high. PARTICULARLY for pavarotti's fach. and in my research i've done in music history classes and vocal lit and ped, i've never heard of a man who can sing a d being considered a baritone. although there are some baritones who CAN hit d's doesn't mean that you HAVE to be able to hit e's to be a tenor.....
tiernan87 3 years ago
Andrea Nozzari who originated many Rossini roles such as Otello, was considered a baritone because of his tessitura and going only to high D. And basically his tessitura is that of a lirico-spinto. I am a lirico-spinto with bel canto technique and I tell you, a high C is not high UNLESS you are screaming your head off in chest voice which is what many modern tenors do.
agnellodei 3 years ago
Thnak you for your knowledgeable comments.
lamsalgado 3 years ago
They are not bracketed into distinct groups.

pavarotti was not a woman; he was a guy.

acitipo 3 years ago

Is she fat? Isn't she? But who cares!? She is a singer (a wonderful one), not a top model... I have to listen to her voice, that's all. Was Pavarotti thin? I really don't think so... meravigliosa Diana, soprano e attrice straordinaria.
Stylographic 3 years ago 3
You are right, she's the best. People should stop to talk about her aspect (that anyway is surly charming) and start to listen her wonderful voice!
maggeo78 3 years ago
And Stylographic, you're right. And the funny thing is she isn't fat at all!
lokitrix 3 years ago 3
Why is everybody so hung up on whether or not she looks fat. Who cares! Regardless of weight she's a great talent, and a babe at that.
big4daily 3 years ago 6
the reason why excellent opera singers are rare is because of the fact that they are pressured by society to be extremely thin.
believe me. i know.
my vocal coach was told to put on 30 pounds when she started singing.
(she is a spinto)
and the reason she is a wonderful spinto is because of the fact she didn't let society creep into her mind.

One question for a dummy like me!! I notice a slight change in timbre on that high F# (3:45)... is this natural in those high notes or is she using her whistle register... or even vocalizing??
But one thing's for sure... she is amazing!
silvr94 3 years ago
She sang the G there instead of the F# (listen to her interview in New York)

Why are people saying she looks fat? She sounds absolutely divine and I think she looks pretty good too! Do we live in such a twisted society that a woman has to be sickly in order to have a pretty body?
maryjivinjane 3 years ago 18
men too
nicosupersex 3 years ago
I saw too on the other page that people were calling her fat which is THE FARTHEST thing from the truth. And I agree with you that how sick our society has gotten that anorexic opera singers are now in vogue. And even more sad is that such a stunningly amazing performance by this woman deserves a big BRAVA, not an ounce of critique on body weight, something so stupid. And in any case, my two cents are, she looks amazing.

Oh, does she now? Well, that's the end of her career then: the critic with the elegant name of "nicosupersex" finds her curves disagreeable. Please limit your comments to something people might actually care about.
Hypermnestre 3 years ago
it's amazing how people can be offended by a stupid text, hehehehehehehhe, i said: "she LOOKS fat, i didn't say she WAS actually fat, i know how perfect she isand cotumes are very important in an opera, at least they are for people like me, who see the opera as an integral art....
i'm sure that all those who complain about my comment are a bunch of fat massive gringos, blond and tasteless... hehehehehehehehehehhe
nicosupersex 3 years ago
I realise that and you are of course entitled to your opinion. I just don't think opera is the right place to bring looks into the equation, as interpretation is done through voice and acting. It's not, for instance, like "normal" films where the interpreters are generally cast to look like their character. And re the race and weight of the "complainers", what a peculiar notion. I am slim and coloured - does this change your opinion of my complaint?!
Hypermnestre 3 years ago
yeah whatever!!!!1
hehehehhehehe
;-))
nicosupersex 3 years ago
Well I don't agree with that entirely. There are many singers who are not cast because they do not fit a role visually and I think that's good. Opera is a theatrical art; yes, singing first, of course, but the other elements need to be there to generally have a good acclaim, and the visual presentation of the performer is definitely up there on the list.
cptnunderwhere 3 years ago 3
You do have a point. There have been occasions in the past where the performer didn't bear the slightest phyical resemblance to the character, and it's uncomfortable to look at. However, because can be so difficult to find certain voicetypes I think in opera it should be permitted not to look on a few pounds more or less and though every effort should be made to get the visuals right, voice I think should take precedence. Bruennhilde being case in point...
Hypermnestre 3 years ago 3
Damrau fat?
Good God, if she's fat then how would you call ... Well, I don't really want to insult anyone so I will not offer examples of people who are REALLY fat. Damrau is about perfect - at least according to MY taste in women.
The funny thing is in case se happened to be really thin some people would be complaining about that. I've seen it happen with other artists.
Thrax1982 3 years ago 3
A soprano of her talent and range really can't get any skinnier than Damrau and still have such good breath support and quality.
pelza12 3 years ago 3
Though I do agree the dress makes her look bigger than she actually is. But still, even looking bigger she doesn't look fat.
happenstance26 3 years ago 2
Seriously. And if you watch ANY of her other videos you can see she's actually in excellent shape.
happenstance26 3 years ago 2
She never ceases to amaze me at the incredible level of natural as well as finely disciplined artistry!!
WOW
The aria is quite something as well.
jbaumboy 3 years ago 2
Ive been trying to find the answer to this on the internet but i cant find it. Maybe some youtube surfer can help me. Around where does a soprano's chest voice switch into head voice? I think its about around a C5 to an E5. Just curious if anybody can give me an answer.
OperaChristina13 3 years ago
well, if you know about high chest singing ('belting') dramatic sopranos/mezzos, such as whitney, mariah, deborah cox, sing F's & G's in the 5th octave in chest, Patti LaBelle is celbrated for her C6 in chest! rember that dramtic sopranos also possess a middle register which is actually between chest & head, its a fairly narrow area but Jazz singer Rachaell Ferrell actually hits & sustains a Eb-5 in middle! but yes, for a mezzo/altos into head is around C5,Cecilia Bartoli & Vivica Genaux hit C6!

This is such a beautiful piece and diana damrau's light but powerful voice just makes it perfect. Its so beautiful, there's just no words to descibe it.

Diana Damrau, I love you !
tetrazzini 3 years ago
with perhaps lower notes than Edita, richer than Dessay's, & as dark as sills, & with G's more silvery, shinier, yet as intense as Edita's, stronger & more bold reminiscent of sills, and void of going nasal, too tight/spreading, or white sounding top register that's brilliant & graceful as Dessay's which actually echoes Sutherland's epic presence of flickering staccatos, & electrifying agility, & roundness of body/core of middle register, & powerful/full-bodied strikingly ringing top roulades!
whistlenotelover 3 years ago 2
the timbres/tonalities/texture/range of the three greatest lyric-coloraturas of all time BEVERLY SILLS + EDITA GRUBEROVA + NATALIE DESSAY come to mind, when u analytically behold the astonishing voice of Damrau!
whistlenotelover 3 years ago
A lot of people don't know but in this opera, Europa (played by Damrau obviously) goes up to a high "G," a whole-step higher than the infamous "Der Holle Rache" sung by the Queen of the Night in Mozart's "Magic Flute." Just found it interesting.
pelza12 3 years ago
This is just so beautiful. There is something special about Diana Damrau's vebrato that just gives me chills, especially in her high head register. Her voice is truely one of a kind.
OperaChristina13 4 years ago 2
I've got a few questions for those really smart Damrau fans. How high does damrau's head voice go. I know the high G is in whistle register but I never really though that much about the high end of her head voice. Also does anyone know how tall she is? I know this is a pointless question but she seems really tall to me. Im really tall too so it kind of makes me feel good that a tall girl can make it in opera (im a wee bit over 6ft) The answers to these questions would be really apriciated.
OperaChristina13 4 years ago
She has already reached an Ab6, in the end of her performance of "Glitter And Be Gay", which you can find here on Youtube. That may give you an idea of her range. About the second question, no idea.

i met hers at La Scala!
She's almost like me. She's 174 cm more or less.
primu2002 4 years ago
first of all, i wish to clear-up to the best of my knowledge, as far as range goes if u are classically trained, you would know that the flageolet (or whistle) register is technically not permitted in classical singing, 'cuz u are using the edges or false-cords, clearly established in larynx physiology, hence the distinct difference between a proper G6 like Damrau's & a 'secular'/popular singer-soprano like Mariah Carey, albeit hitting the note, but airy/squealish/weak wit no amplifation!
whistlenotelover 3 years ago
to your second question, somehting interesting for you to note is that statiscally most light/coloratura sopranos , Sumi Jo, Natalie Dessay (barely 5'0"], Edita Gruberovam Kathleen Battle, Patricia Ciofi, etc. are of small stature, ironically the height of singer has mildly reflected their register, most mezzos are taller, notable exception were Joan Sutherland & Mezzo Marilyn Horne, ironically she was trained as a mezzo at first; cuz most taller sopranos tend 2 sound fuller: slightly mezzoish!
whistlenotelover 3 years ago
I know what u mean. But im not a typically shaped person. Although im about 6ft I am very (and believe me VERY) high waisted, which I like. My chest in not very wide either, I more have a very small chest (like that of a shorter woman) and my neck is not very large. If you heard my voice it is very light and not heavy. My teacher has looked at my face and identified that my resonance cavities are small which has to do that from my chest up I am very small(so to say)n my legs are most of my body.
