Here's the skinny: You can set triggers super sensitive to where all you do is tap the head of a drum and it will activate. Activating links to a midi file, so a drummer can be playing light as a feather with no power and come out sounding SUPER beast. You can play with them not so sensitive and it won't be cheating... They're only cheating if you can't sound that good without them! Same with distortion, can't play without it, GET BETTER.

Triggers are necessary in metal because when you tour relentlessly and play nonstop-super tight metal every day of the tour for months on end, you need a little help sounding tight and consistent without having a heart attack from beating the shit out of your drum kit. i was skeptical about their live performance for awhile, especially without a second guitarist i didnt think they could bring it live. I saw em recently and i think it was during the system's failure where i saw justin just rip it, he was going insanely fast. Still I have my doubts until i hear Sleepless live then ill know for sure, at a few points during that song both the drums and guitar get so out of line that i doubt they could pull it off live
