I'm not talking about the camera jerking around; I'm saying that Cecilia is, like a puppet, because the recording has been doctored in order to make her trills appear faster than they are.
@billinrio Not true. IVe heard her live twice and she has the best trills from any singer at the moment. She comes second after Sutherland IMO. People can say what they want about Cecilia, but (unlike most singers) she has real trills.
for those of you that want to know...this isnt a scarlatti piece...this is an aria from Handel's La Ressurezione (i probably destroyed the spelling on that...but now ya know!)
As always, the splendid Bartoli makes it as much fun for her orchestra as she does for her audience. A good lesson for all would be to watch and listen to her orchestras as much as to her incredible voice. Such pure joy.
VULGAR cheap stage presence, as always, just like a manic little girl. I much prefer her slow, soft plangent pieces, but in these bravura arias she is showing off, in love with her own voice. Does she have a trill? It always sounds more like a yodel! All this bumping, nodding at the orchestra etc shows what an immature singer she still is, after so many years of concerts (NOT stage roles, she only does 1-2 a year) and in her mid-40s now. Yes, a good voice, but not a serious, grown artist. VULGAR
@philipc67 thats what makes her an amazing artist! So many people love her because she feels the music. Its really fun to watch. And if I would have a voice like that, I would be in love with it too! I would show off too. Its such an amazing instrument. I understand youre opinion about her trill. First I didn't like them, but now I think they are one of the best. Many other singers have trills that sound like normal vibrato. When Cecilia's does a trill it really sounds different then vibrato.
@oliviasmulyan Yeahhh :P I really like the trills from Joan Sutherland, they are very good too. I dont think I can choose between Bartoli and Sutherland trills. They are very different but both amazing!
No, its not at all "conspiratorial". Bartoli jerks about like a puppet even when the camera is steady. Check out those hand movements. The thing is, its is quite easy, and often fun, to modify speed without changing pitch or to modify pitch without changing speed. All kinds of shareware and freeware - such as Audacity and Vox (for the Mac) are available for this purpose. But when video is involved at the same time, then you get exactly what we see here.
This recording has been electronically "doctored" in order to speed up the aria. Note how "jerky" the video is. Bartoli has a naturally spectacular voice and doesn't need such "assistance" from would-be fans.
@billinrio ... An interesting theory, I suppose, but way too conspiratorial. The "jerky" quality is due not to "doctoring" but by zooming to the max on a little Sony Cybershot and bracing myself to hold the shot still (you'll note it settles down a few seconds in). So Cecilia's naturally spectacular voice is, indeed, natural in this video. I'd only note that it's the encore; she's reprising an aria performed earlier in the program and turning up the fireworks a bit as a crowd pleaser. ;-)
i have a question. I thought her voice is pretty small compared with the Golden Age singers. Last time I can barely hear very clearly from the last row of the opera house.
@leopoldbloom and plus even if u did doctor it there is no way you could do that without making everything on stage look jumpy too, in order to do that you have to cut little bits off and then even her accoponiment would seem jumpy, and thye would look jerky. so yea she is naturally a fantastic singer
I just love how people criticize her so much....I'd like to hear you sing that piece with as much control and precision as she did. Trust me, it's not easy.

An art that is based on a science: music, combined with something known as period style.
Bartoli doesn't have the technique down to an art and that is a fact, even less so when it comes to style since she sings any composer with the same style.
That isn't taste, that is facts.
Whether you overlook that it's another story but don't expect other people to say she's vocally talented when she isn't...
That's your opinion... I think that to do all the things she does with her voice, she must to have some kind of technique... Not all in opera is "bel canto", and that's good.
To who? whos point is that? She must be doing somthing right, I think shes wonderful, But I dont cut her pay checks and my opinion really dosent matter. I mean shes all over youtube everyone knows of her ,well i will say most people know her. There a alot of untalented people out there, but it is thier character that got them where they are. :)
manrico60: I'll take a small voice singing well anyday over some of the overblowing hot air out there. Her talent and artistry are undeniable. Besides, she's there and doing it and we're talking about it...hmmmmm.
ok, ok...you like the fact you don't like her...you enjoy not being the bunch of people who like something or somebody. Ok. Now we all know it. You're wonderful, noone convinces you with his/her art.
That makes you actually happy?

I think most things tend to be acquired taste. It's like listening to a really good drummer or watching a talented jujitsu fighter. You start with something simple that catches your eye/ear, either a great beat or a wicked rear naked choke. You then learn to appreciate its complexity. Finally, you like it enough that you start wondering how far artists/athletes can push their limits. It doesn't mean you will like everything, but you will be able to recognize & respect the level of difficulty.

I don't get it...she sounds like she has the hiccups. I don't find this pleasing to my ears, more irritation. Is opera an acquired taste like liver and onions?
I thought sort of the same thing. She seems extremely talented, but I just don't dig the song. However, I'm not a complete, ignorant fool. Watched an heard her tonight, at Braunschweig / Germany, she was amazing ! First a blue eve-dress with silver and second a strawberrycoloured eve-dress with gold, singing (and nearly dancing) a couple of different italian and french songs very passionated, at least she gave 5 encores, the viewers gave her standing ovations and she seems to be very happy !
Go girl! It is nice to see you having so much fun singing this! Makes me smile simply because you are so darn good! And... it is obvious that you are having the time of your life!

I dunno...that Joyce diDonato is pretty much conquering all she surveys, and with a great deal more versatility and size. Bartoli should be quite nervous. i would be. The recent 'Clari's in Zurich were distinctly underwhelming. The 'Opera Proibita' was definitely the best thing she had done to date. recent 'Sonnambula' recording is definite misfire.
I love this, I think she is the biggest cutie in her perfromance. She is so lively and willing to not take the role of the ultra "diva" and just have a great time on stage. That hall is amazing! I perfromed in it with maestro Keith lockhart. Phenominal!
Cecilia Bartoli doesn't have the best voice in the opera world today. There are bigger ranges, there are people with more agility.. but this doesn't matter! Cecilia Bartoli not only performs many different periods/styles of classical music, but she does it with such energy, such absolute joy, that there is no way to dislike her. Absolutely wonderful performance. BRAVA!
I have my second thoughts about some of the things she does but how can I resist the joy she transmits and the fun she has at it...!? She makes me smile.
By the way, other self+management proclaimed "superstars" have been ill-advised to try this exuberant delivery of hers in their appearances but they make a fool of themselves. Somehow she doesn't(!!)
She does a lovely job, but if I had to sing this, I think I might shoot myself in the eye. . . I commend her vocal chords and bow humbly to their talent and power . . . wow.
It's entirely possibly to respect something but dislike it :| Personally, this woman sounds like a hyperactive chimp to me. But, people tell me she's good, so I'll at least have to give her credit.
Last fryday was the concert here in Stockholm, I was there and es SO MUCH BETTER than in the records!!!! is impresive her voice, she is charming and captures all the adience!!!!
At the end of the concert I was with some people waiting for her maybe to get an autofraph, well we get MORE!!! she was there talking with us like all time friends, she is so humble... Was a great night!!!!!
Also, after the concert, she signed autographs for over two hours--past midnight. I got a chance to meet her briefly. She is actually quite good-looking; looks much much better in person than in any of her videos. She was very friendly and warm.
I had the great fortune of attending Bartoli's OPERA PROIBITA concert on Oct. 10, 2005 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California. She appeared with the Orchestra La Scintilla of Zurich Opera. Bartoli's talent is TRULY AMAZING to say the least.
Much too fast, it has nothing to do with Mr. Handels wonderful music, it is all about her. Big deal, she can sing fast (sort of) her sound is ugly and poorly produced and her stage manner is tacky
who is your favorite singer anyways? madonna? for crying outloud dude!!! name one who can sing even close to what this diva does everyday....no offense
I'm not talking about the camera jerking around; I'm saying that Cecilia is, like a puppet, because the recording has been doctored in order to make her trills appear faster than they are.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I dunno...that Joyce diDonato is pretty much conquering all she surveys, and with a great deal more versatility and size.

It's entirely possibly to respect something but dislike it :| Personally, this woman sounds like a hyperactive chimp to me. But, people tell me she's good, so I'll at least have to give her credit.
That's how I see it :3

Last fryday was the concert here in Stockholm, I was there and es SO MUCH BETTER than in the records!!!! is impresive her voice, she is charming and captures all the adience!!!!
At the end of the concert I was with some people waiting for her maybe to get an autofraph, well we get MORE!!! she was there talking with us like all time friends, she is so humble... Was a great night!!!!!

were any of these concerts recorded to purchase?
