great uncle served in the 442nd. makes us all proud to this day. he passed away last year in hawaii. May our sons and daughters return safetly and may they rest in peace with honor and pride in their hearts
One of my cousins fought in the bulge.. Robert Lynn Russel. Another one is a distant cousin of mine who died flying over europe in '44 serving canada like his grandfather did. Both died. He was killed over Europe and his grandfather was the 1st canadian officer to die in the Boer war.
no dislikes... wow that's incredible. that shows american Patriotism. God bless you Sidney Phillips... and God bless all who served for America to fight for our freedom
I deeply admire him for having such a harsh experience. Probably the worst experience you can ever encounter - and still manage to say "I've had a wonderful life".
That's spirit at it's best.
Thinking about all those emo kids saying life sucks, because they got too much homework.
This guy's seen friends die right in front of him and yet he sits there in his old age and smiles - managing to pull through it. Damn, what a hero.
God !. I feel so humble. I went to Afghan with the British Army at 28 and was shit scared. This man was a kid at 18 ! .. God bless him and our American allies.
@idoggie2 really? haha I used to hate going to visit him at his office, always meant it was time for a booster shot lol He was a great doctor though :-)
This is why we sleep soundly at night, in a warm bed. This is why we can walk outside of our house and feal relatively safe. This is why we can live the "good life", or "live it up" here in america. So next time you see a little kid playing in the street, smile on there face with out a care in the world this is why. Remember these men next time you and your friends are at the movies etc; bcuz it is soley becasue of men like this that you can do that in such a care free manor.
“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.”
I love all our vets just like sid, but omg it's kinda funny..any 17 yr old guy will grow old and have a huge family that'll love him. Like idk. If you really think about it idk I love it lol
Im joining the Marine corp as an officer and i cant wait to do my part for this country, if that man can go through all that he went through for his country theres no excuse that i could give in the world to not do my part for the same country
"ive had a wonderful life, i really have." now that just really makes you think about all the kids these days, probably even myself, that complain they have unfair lives because their parents wont let them do certain things, or they dont have certain items. really, thank you for your service.
If anyone in the world deserves a life where they can be happy, it's an American veteran. Doesn't matter what war or core they came from, every man who shed his blood or would gladly do so to fight for his country deserves no better than the best possible life after their service. God knows men like that are true Americans and true patriots, and I'm glad to have ancestors who fought for this country and never a day goes by that I don't think of those who protected America and her people.
I will buy the dvd. when it comes out. I bought band of brothers as well. Makes me feel proud.. My grandfather was at pearl harbour and was awarded the Navy Cross.
So glad these men have had their story told. Im 59 years old and knew little of the war in the Pacific till I started watching the HBO Series. Now Im reading books about it. These men are real heroes.
I really really wished they'd gotten the old Mobile, Alabama accent right for Sledge and Phillips instead of just making them speak in a generic Appalachian-inflected twang. I mean, they have recordings of Eugene's voice from his video interviews, and Sidney's still alive. They had the real men's voices to model the actors' accents off of and yet they still got it completely and utterly wrong.
Phillips is so dead on about talking about the war, cursing, and appreciating small things like a blanket or hot food or even a shower. Semper Fi brother!
three of my family members served in WWII one of them was one of the flag raisers on Iwo Jima and my granddad served as bombardier and the my granddads cousin was in the Canadian army on Juno beach
@Litterboxer529 MY GOD 16!!! FUCK!!! im 16 and i cannot possibly imagine myself doing what that poor boy did. I can only imagine myself as one of those poor sods who broke down crouched up in a ball qwivering and crying, i become that shit scared about war just thinkin about it.

i cant believe that someone my age was able to deal with such a thing like this war. i know i can not deal with that and i do't know anyone of my friends who could
I am a veteran of Vietnam. I feel akin to this man and can understand the relationships he had to those he served with. Down through our history every war and conflict have produced men like these, the real strength of America. I love this man like a brother - he is my brother.
@sarah36582 You must be proud. I moved to Mobile in 1938 and attended Murphy Senior HS. I dont claim to know your grandpa but I am lived in that time frame and knew of him. I went into the armor. Dr. Philips is a good man.
From the mind of a 14 year old heart, I say that your father derserves the respect of every human being on this planet. For it's from the valor shown by these men that keeps oppertunity alive. So I hope, that as he held the gears of a nation intact, that I can get to the controls of this machine, and not only keep it rolling, but make it more efficient and smarter than its oppositions from outside, and within. He let choice remain an oppertunity, and for that, I thank you both.
@sarah36582 Sarah, a few months ago, I had the honor to speak with your grandfather. He came to my school and shared with us his experience in Guadalcanal. It is really a true honor to have spoken to him, I'm a native Mobile Alabamian just like him. I asked him if he was ever injured during the war. He laughed and said "My worst injury was having a coconut fall ontop of my head and it knocked me out cold!"
He truly is a War Hero and everyone should look at him and feel thankful.
@Bluenick20 haha yes he is! I didnt even know that story until they started interviewing him for pacific. I found out a lot of cool stuff I didint know either. :-D He is definitely a comedian so it would be just like him to get knocked out by a coconut. haha
@sarah36582 I am a 1st generation Chinese American and my grandparents fled from Shanghai when the Japanese bombed and invaded. I don't blame the Japanese people at all, but I understand their military government hadn't given them a good impression of my people. If men like your grandfather hadn't suffered what they'd been through, the Japanese would have conquered China and horror would have resulted. It's because of his bravery that I can be alive now to thank him for what he did. *salute*
