  • God bless you Sir. God Bless!

  • How fucked are we now.

  • great man true inspiration

  • great uncle served in the 442nd. makes us all proud to this day. he passed away last year in hawaii. May our sons and daughters return safetly and may they rest in peace with honor and pride in their hearts

  • One of my cousins fought in the bulge.. Robert Lynn Russel. Another one is a distant cousin of mine who died flying over europe in '44 serving canada like his grandfather did. Both died. He was killed over Europe and his grandfather was the 1st canadian officer to die in the Boer war.

  • no dislikes... wow that's incredible. that shows american Patriotism. God bless you Sidney Phillips... and God bless all who served for America to fight for our freedom

  • I deeply admire him for having such a harsh experience. Probably the worst experience you can ever encounter - and still manage to say "I've had a wonderful life".

    That's spirit at it's best.

Thinking about all those emo kids saying life sucks, because they got too much homework.

This guy's seen friends die right in front of him and yet he sits there in his old age and smiles - managing to pull through it. Damn, what a hero.

  • God !. I feel so humble. I went to Afghan with the British Army at 28 and was shit scared. This man was a kid at 18 ! .. God bless him and our American allies.

  • To survive the war, then loosing your wife, how can a man hold himself together? I honour this man.

  • @mechagodzilla3 If your Japanese you should be able to spell your home city correctly.

  • @renno103 Osaka i mean.Man i gotta make sure to log out now cause of my brother

  • 1st Marine Division :)

  • “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.”

  • To bad they don't show videos like this in our schools. It would give the kids a sense of what real heros are.

  • I love all our vets just like sid, but omg it's kinda funny..any 17 yr old guy will grow old and have a huge family that'll love him. Like idk. If you really think about it idk I love it lol

  • these guys are heros there is nothing else tp say i hope i be like eugene if i go to war

  • These men, are the best men in the world!

They fight for our freedom, they fight to make a better world, they fight for our rights!

We have to thank them for the bravest things in the world!

  • "Those early days on Guadalcanal were kind of wild". gotta love understatements of the centurys like that.

  • Hero's Without a question of a doubt, Hero's!

    Salute!

  • Where did these men find the strength ? G-d know's how they all did what they did.

I have nothing but total respect for them. Don't think I could have been an equal to them.

  • I love his sense of humor.

  • Wonderful tribute to a great American Hero.. Loved the story in both "The Pacific" and "Ken Burn's The War". The best generation ever.. Thanks guys!

  • Happy birthday here's a grenade

  • Im joining the Marine corp as an officer and i cant wait to do my part for this country, if that man can go through all that he went through for his country theres no excuse that i could give in the world to not do my part for the same country

  • "ive had a wonderful life, i really have." now that just really makes you think about all the kids these days, probably even myself, that complain they have unfair lives because their parents wont let them do certain things, or they dont have certain items. really, thank you for your service.

  • @WarMovieTutorials everything is SO much different now

DON'Tcompare the kids today to the kids then.

  • @helenadagreat Yeah, you're right! Kids nowadays are just egostitical (if it's that how you say it...too lazy to look it up)

  • If anyone in the world deserves a life where they can be happy, it's an American veteran. Doesn't matter what war or core they came from, every man who shed his blood or would gladly do so to fight for his country deserves no better than the best possible life after their service. God knows men like that are true Americans and true patriots, and I'm glad to have ancestors who fought for this country and never a day goes by that I don't think of those who protected America and her people.

  • I could listen to him talk for hours.........very moving

  • " Just pray and hold on "

  • "You'll Be Sor-ree!"

  • Jesus, I turn 18 in less than a month, unbelievable to think what he was doing at my age! God Bless, Sid!

  • What a great guy and great family. Knowing a little about him makes you think.

  • thats sum nice marines XD i wanna grenade

  • Sid Phillips is a friends of mine, a man of unusual integrity and character. And his family has followed in his footsteps. He is an American Hero.

  • ASHTON HOLMES IS SO HOT!

  • I will buy the dvd. when it comes out. I bought band of brothers as well. Makes me feel proud.. My grandfather was at pearl harbour and was awarded the Navy Cross.

  • hope this series comes to dvd

  • So glad these men have had their story told. Im 59 years old and knew little of the war in the Pacific till I started watching the HBO Series. Now Im reading books about it. These men are real heroes.

  • I really really wished they'd gotten the old Mobile, Alabama accent right for Sledge and Phillips instead of just making them speak in a generic Appalachian-inflected twang. I mean, they have recordings of Eugene's voice from his video interviews, and Sidney's still alive. They had the real men's voices to model the actors' accents off of and yet they still got it completely and utterly wrong.

  • @protosswannabe You dropkick! With the story that this series told, allyou can do is whinge about accents!!! Get a life dickhead!!

  • @sarah36582 You should be proud!

  • Awesome looking family

  • Phillips is so dead on about talking about the war, cursing, and appreciating small things like a blanket or hot food or even a shower. Semper Fi brother!

  • Respect and Honor to YOU all...

  • three of my family members served in WWII one of them was one of the flag raisers on Iwo Jima and my granddad served as bombardier and the my granddads cousin was in the Canadian army on Juno beach

  • @camman44 May I know the name of your family member who was the flag rasier...

  • @tanidn Sure his name was Rene Gagnon

  • my grandad was only 16 when he landed on Juno Beach.

  • @Litterboxer529 MY GOD 16!!! FUCK!!! im 16 and i cannot possibly imagine myself doing what that poor boy did. I can only imagine myself as one of those poor sods who broke down crouched up in a ball qwivering and crying, i become that shit scared about war just thinkin about it.

  • i am 15 i come britain and i iam going to join the army to fight the tailban with are allies the americans

  • @blondie5423 im joining the marines so ill be right up there with you

  • wow he was only 18 when he went to war?

barely an adult. he experienced all that when he was only 18? that's scary.

i cant even imagine my 19 year-old brother doing something like that.

  • i cant believe that someone my age was able to deal with such a thing like this war. i know i can not deal with that and i do't know anyone of my friends who could

  • i cant believe that someone my age was able to deal with such a thing like this war. i know i can not deal with that and i do't know anyone of my friends who could

  • What a class act and exceptional person. I just ordered his book--got me an autographed copy too!!

Thank you Dr. Phillips for sharing your story and for your service to our country.

  • I am a veteran of Vietnam. I feel akin to this man and can understand the relationships he had to those he served with. Down through our history every war and conflict have produced men like these, the real strength of America. I love this man like a brother - he is my brother.

  • HERO no other word can really describe you guys and what you had to endure for us

  • @bommer321 amen! hero is a word that tends to be over used....but these men....these men are the definition of HERO. God bless them

  • Salute you !

  • God bless him and the other devil dogs for sticking their necks out.

  • semper fi , brothers

  • Thats my grandddad...i'm soo proud of you and so happy that your story was able to be shared to millions! i love you!

  • @sarah36582 :-) You must be very proud! xxx

  • @sarah36582 You must be proud. I moved to Mobile in 1938 and attended Murphy Senior HS. I dont claim to know your grandpa but I am lived in that time frame and knew of him. I went into the armor. Dr. Philips is a good man.

  • @sarah36582 I was wish I had a relative like him

  • @sarah36582 Please tell him Semper FI! for me. God Bless.

  • @sarah36582 tell him that he is one of many heroes who fought in the pacific and that i respect him

  • @sarah36582 @sarah36582 tell him that he is one of many heroes who fought in the pacific and that i respect him

  • @sarah36582 lies

  • @sarah36582 your grandfather had the most adorable smile!

  • @sarah36582 really?

  • Sarah,

From the mind of a 14 year old heart, I say that your father derserves the respect of every human being on this planet. For it's from the valor shown by these men that keeps oppertunity alive. So I hope, that as he held the gears of a nation intact, that I can get to the controls of this machine, and not only keep it rolling, but make it more efficient and smarter than its oppositions from outside, and within. He let choice remain an oppertunity, and for that, I thank you both.

  • @sarah36582 your comment got more thumbs up than the vid.

You grandfather is a badass. =)

  • @sarah36582 Sarah, a few months ago, I had the honor to speak with your grandfather. He came to my school and shared with us his experience in Guadalcanal. It is really a true honor to have spoken to him, I'm a native Mobile Alabamian just like him. I asked him if he was ever injured during the war. He laughed and said "My worst injury was having a coconut fall ontop of my head and it knocked me out cold!"

He truly is a War Hero and everyone should look at him and feel thankful.

  • @Bluenick20 haha yes he is! I didnt even know that story until they started interviewing him for pacific. I found out a lot of cool stuff I didint know either. :-D He is definitely a comedian so it would be just like him to get knocked out by a coconut. haha

  • @sarah36582 Your Grandfather's story is inspiring. What a courageous, kind and gentle, honorable, wonderful man.

  • @sarah36582 You have an hero for a grandfather!!! My father and uncle were laso in the war. Tell him one thing for me---thank you!!!

  • @sarah36582 I am a 1st generation Chinese American and my grandparents fled from Shanghai when the Japanese bombed and invaded. I don't blame the Japanese people at all, but I understand their military government hadn't given them a good impression of my people. If men like your grandfather hadn't suffered what they'd been through, the Japanese would have conquered China and horror would have resulted. It's because of his bravery that I can be alive now to thank him for what he did. *salute*

  • @sarah36582 u serious???

  • @angelsforheaven Yes :)

  • @sarah36582 if you're serious then can you please tell your grandad that he is a hero and i look up to him alot (:

  • @sarah36582 Does he still talk about the war?

  • @ZerrickiShadow Yes, he does if you bring it up. :) Of course he'll always use humor mixed in with the stories.

  • @sarah36582 Does he ever talk about his friends like Leckie or Eugene?

  • @sarah36582 are you in the picture in 4:40, if so where?

  • @sarah36582

    who sidney or ashton holmes

  • @sarah36582 you kidding ! omg !

  • @sarah36582 Wow! Really!? That's awesome! :D

  • @sarah36582 wow. what a special legacy you have!

  • Respond to this video... this breaks my heart- he was just a kid. 17 year olds belong with books, not with guns. so brave and so amazing, but so sad.

  • Respond to this video... please thank him for me for his service :-). how did he watch this film though? it must have brought back so much horror for him?

  • @sarah36582 Really? That's is cool! Tell him that he's a great man!

  • @sarah36582 your grandad is my new hero. i'm 26 and almost a decade older than he was then and i feel like a nothing when i think what he and the others there did.

  • @sarah36582 God bless you and your grandpa, hes a hero.

  • thanks to marines like Phillips who saved freedom in asia....

  • Happy birthday dear Phillips. I'm proud you help drove the Japanese off the Pacific Ocean.

  • I remember him from Ken Burns The War.
