@tcb19931234 yes..it is a Simon & Garfunkel song..and its a beautiful cover of it..despide Johnson changed here and there few notes..as about his guitar play (i invite you to look for his live performance in 1990 NY with Cliffs of Dover..a masterpiece..unless you ve already saw it)..verrryy goood.. gorgeous Johnson..ps.i made too a cover of this lovely SG song
@drdmento just think though - maybe eric has never actually looked at the music for this, he probably knew what chords they were just from hearing the song and thought "hey, lets play kathy's song!"
I'd love to see so much more of the acoustic singer songwriter type from ej. It's a breath of fresh air from him when you've got cliffs of dover solo overload.
@wileypayote He's on an acoustic tour right now, the Acoustic Masters Tour with Andy McKee and another acoustic guitarist. He also says he's working on an acoustic album. :D
@HyperTyphoon I know, man. I own all his albums (minus Electromagnets records and Souvenir.) I was saying that he's working on his first acoustic album, nothing more.
@Flattwin4ever Prior to the last few years since he has had his own signature model Martin guitar made, E.J. has always played on the regular old standard issue off-the-shelf Martin D-28. It makes sense that the best would only play on the best.
If I hear another comparison about which version is better, I'm gonna puke. The original version always has something special, especially to those who grew up on it.
Covers range from terrible to awesome, but why compare to the original or between versions? Apples and oranges cannot be compared.
I love this version, it's heartfelt, clean, and EJ really gets behind the song. Lovely.
as great as e. johnson is, and as many "thumbs down" as this comment has gotten, i have to agree w/ theslian here. nobody beats paul simon at his own game. simon up there w/ joni mitchell, james taylor, dylan, lennon, etc etc... one of the greatest pop singer/songwriters in history. covering his classic material is a great thing to do, but pretty much nobody will ever top his own original versions. they're often essentially perfect.
Often, dont mean to be a douche but seen dylan and damn. Love his songs but has anyone noticed almost every cover of his is just made way the fuck better.
the guitar part is beautiful, but i dont really like the vocals, or at least at the beginning anyways. might just be that lame echo. normally i dont mind erics vocals at all.
anyways this is great thanx for posting. im going to try and incorporate some of what he does into my version of this.
He was doing another Paul Simon cover on that tour as well: "April Come She Will." I saw him on that tour and he played it at The Roxy in Southern California. I had never heard the song before, but it gave me goose bumps from head to toe. I've since heard Simon's original, and I have to say Eric's version blows it away. Some artists just know how to take a good song and make it a great song. I dare say it was as good as "Kathy's Song," if not better. He is such an under-appreciated singer.
Exactly the same song from Simon & Garfunkel, no new notes.
