But what solidified it for me was 2 things: watching them with Eric Clapton at the Free Nelson Mandela Concert at Wembley and the album "Alchemy"! Both were mind blowing! The version with Clapton (Wembley 88) is my least favorite, something is missing there, it just doesn't feel right to me. This version is waaaaay better i.m.o. One of my favorites.

@ddstressfree yes, the mandela 88 version of sultans is my least favorite as well. clapton and knopfler are great guitarists and friends, but when they play together, they just sound different. clapton influences the playing and makes it sound more blues-y. it takes a lot of the feeling u get with most dire straits songs out of it. the same goes with walk of life at mandela 88. clapton's solo in it sounds like more "layla" than it does walk of life, if 'ya know wat i mean

I know I've said it before, but to me Sutlans of Swing is without doubt one of the most addicting songs I've ever heard. I'd also like to get a copy of this on DVD but I don't know how to do it, so I just downloaded whole Wembley 85 Concert into my computer (look at the right side then you'll find it: Dire Straits TV-HD - Wembley Arena - 1985).

What a terrific show!! I wish it would be released on official DVD, like Alchemy Live and On the Night Live (both I have bought from Amazon.uk). But so far no such luck.

Maybe someday it will. I certainly hope so. :)

@mughjatori It's a Schecter, made in England, built almost exactly like a real Strat, but "tougher" for touring. They made a few guitars for Mark over the years, and they could get away with it without being sued because the guitars were given to Mark, and were never for sale.

He still plays them today.
