Even as a lifelong Ranger fan, and I've watched since right after Brodeur made his start when I was 5, and as someone who's always hated him and said he's overrated and benefitted from the Trap, and the defense in front of him, and the 17 shots a game average that he'd faced for most of his career, and the benefit of the last 5 seasons after the lockout when he has the shootout wins..........
I have to give The Devil his Due. Congrats, Marty. You'll always be the greatest thing we hate.
thats not the point, im making an anology.. brodeur is better in the regular season = presidents trophy.. roy is better in the playoffs = stanley cup.. id rather have a goalie get me to the playoffs and then play at a conn symthe level, than have one that could earn me a no.1 seed but fail in the finals..
Say what you want about him, he has the best numbers of any goalie. But Terry Sawchuk is still my favorite goalie of all time. That many wins with much smaller pads back then? Imagine if he had the pads they had back then. He would have probably recorded at least 500+ wins.
Not once has he had to change the size of his gear...Not disagreeing with you, but also take into account how much faster the game is, how much harder the shots are, etc....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Brodeur played behind good teams. And we all know the Devils are or were a defensive minded team. The Devils have been known as a defense-first team since Lemaire's tenure. They perfected the neutral-zone trap. It means less shots on net. I didn't say this is the only reason he had so many wins, i said it contributed to it. Brodeur still worked hard for his wins, but because of his teams superb defensive talents, he didn't have to work as hard as other goalies in teams who don't trap.
The Devils have also been offensively prolific during Brodeur's tenure. From 98-01, they were 1st or 2nd in scoring and have been in the top half of the league for over half of his reign as well. Another point on this subject: in 4 trips to the Finals, Brodeur has never won a Conn Smythe Trophy, or to put it another way, he has never been the single greatest reason for his team's success. He'll never match Roy for playoff wins either, so you tell me who's more clutch.
The only opinion I shared was that people have bias opinions, and you seem to have the same one. You seeing me as bias and all. So perhaps if you don't think I should share mine, you shouldn't either.
by your logic, you wouldn't be able to determine the greatest in anything. The greatest king, president, pope, etc. my question though is how you can tell the biased from the unbiased??? I could say Gretzky is the greatest hockey player ever. is that biased??
It's hard to determine who is the greatest goaltender of all time. Brodeur could be. However Brodeur played behind a stingy defense his whole career, especially with Stevens and Niedermayer, and not to mention the Devil's system of Trapping. These have certainly contributed to many of Brodeur's victories... something other great goaltenders such as Roy and Hasek can't acclaim to. Had Brodeur played is entire career with the Leafs or Rangers, maybe 522 wins would still be a distance away.
The reason he has that many wins IS due to the teams he plays behind. However, superb defense and the defensive system they had for years IS NOT the reason he won as many games as he did. He has been very lucky to play behind a good-superb winning team every season but one. That doesn't mean he hasn't had to work for it...So its a hard argument to make.
Now you are gonna blame the guy for the team he played in??? come on!!! Either it's Roy, or Brodeur, or Sawchuk or Belfour, they are ALL great Goalies, no matter the time, the team they played!!!!
Not putting blame on anyone! Blame for what??? Nothing wrong has happened here to be blaming anyone, so what you talking about???? I'm just analyzing careers; where one great goalie behind a superb defensive team can be as great as other great goalies who's teams were not as defensively talented. I haven't made no conclusion yet, but I do respect every talented goalie, no matter what team they played on. Analyzing careers like this does not disrespect a goalies skills, so go check yourself!!!!!!
WRONG! Marty does not have niedermayer anymore stevens idk if he is still there Marty has faced idk 20 30 shots a game the devils deffense ant what it use to be way back when they won the cup not that long ago as for leafs now there all rookies all leafs fans have to do is wait and belive me leafs well be kiking Habs ass no offence to Hab fans
@Reginahomeboy yea im a habs fan i have to agree Leafs (for the first time since the Joseph-era) have a potential (key word:P) to be pretty decent in a couple years, whereas habs, well, were stuck with Gainey doing f*ck all....
@Lexloana how are the habs doing anyway? flames are just getting warmed up and jarome is looking for pay back from last year so i think there tied for like 3rd or 2nd but yea all the leafs fans have to do is just lay back and wait
heyheyhey another frenchmen tops it all so someone wants to say someting about us french people again , Brodeur, Lemieux , Roy , Maurice Rocket Richard, Guy Lafleur, Micheal Bossy and in a 10 years from now to become the next goalie to tie Brodeur, Roberto Luongo, and i forget so many great ones.
Does anyone think they will, once he gets the 5th win, put up an even better commercial for his last 4 needed shutouts to pass Sawchuk's thought-unbeatable record?
Personally, i think breaking that is a much bigger deal. And is a much more historical thing, being that Terry DIED on the ice back in the late fifties. Roy's record's only a few years old. Most of the guys on the top ten list for shutouts, however, are dead.
The wins record is the holy grail of goaltending records.
It is comparable to the goals and points record, its a credit to Brodeur's incredible conditioning and talent.
Of course, Brodeur will continue to break records while haters continue to draw at straws to try to make them seem less impressive then they really are.
I'm never going to think Richter's achievements speak louder, NOW, than do Uncle Daddy's, but please do consider the point Kovy274Hart made earlier on my exclamation (which by the way was a joke meant to excite all you devils fans to frenzy; it worked). He makes a valid argument.
Mike Richter? Please. All he did was take advantage of backstopping the '94 Edmonton Oil.....ahem, New York Ranger$. If anyone out there actually thinks he will be remembered as one of the games greatest, please put down the pipe. IDC put it best - he's a one Cup wonder, nothing more.
I really don't see how Conn Smythe trophies determine who's the better goaltender. Marty was a Conn Smythe candidate for each of his SC victories. As for the 2001 Stanley Cup, you can't make the argument that Roy's better because he was the winning goalie. The Avs had a far superior offensive team than the Devils that year, goaltenders alone don't entirely determine which team is better. So if Roy is better than Brodeur just because of the 2001 SC, does that make Mike Vernon better than Roy?
I hate the argument that the Devils team defense is the only reason behind his accolades, complete nonsense. I hope you watched the game against the Flyers today, he is so positional sound its absurd. Roy had some incredible teams in front of him as well. Hockey is a team sport.
Roy is a legend as well, but his fans have to deal with the fact that Marty will not only break the wins record, but crush it to the point that the obnoxious shootouts win argument will have no merit either.
i agree the shootout argument is kinda weak cuz brodeur will definetley hit around 650 give or take. both will be remembered as some of the greatest ever but i would chose roy out of the two. marty cleary had a stronger team in front of him to shelter his stats unlike roy on the habs. roy also perfected the butterfly and changed the sport forever! broduer never had an imapact as big as that. and like u said hockey is a team sport. wins come from a team not just a goalie
The 1996 and 2001 Avalanche teams were All-Star teams, Roy wasnt sheltered by them? Brodeur won 2 Vezinas behind defenseman like Andy Greene, Sheldon Brookbank, Vitaly Vishnevski, that argument is nonsense. Patrick Roy was Martin Brodeur's hero, he absolutely changed the game but it comes a time where even legends get eclipsed. Roy fans should see it as respect as a lifelong fan of him is breaking his record.
oh yea i deffinetley respect it! heck if one goalie deserves to break it should be him. and like i said before the habs were not an all star team. and with aves, they were great but they were not a defensive defence. they wr more offenive forcing roy to take much more saves than brodeur he basically turned the tide of the 01 finals by himself and snatched the conn sythme and cup right from brodeur. i will remember brodeur as one ofthe best ever, but i would not call him the greatest of all time
This is true but what about the 86 Habs and 93 Habs? Were those AS teams or were they carried by Roy on his back? He was a rookie when they won in 86 and the 93 team won all those games in OT. I believe the two goalies are very close. When Marty wins Cup 4, they will be even.
well according to statists roy is better becuase of more cups and more conn symthes. those two alone keep brodeur away from the title of greatest ever in a second
Statistics over a whole career have more merit. And by the way, he has won 2 Vezina trophies without Stevens and Niedermayer.
Listen I think Roy is awesome but the fact just keep building and building against him with every Brodeur win and shutout. And by the way in the 2003 playoffs, Brodeur deserved a Conn Smythe, 7 shutouts, 3 in the finals, come on. Its not his fault the media was obsessed with a goalie with oversized equipment who only showed up for the first three rounds.
If you want to go by stats, Brodeur has more Vienza's. Also Brodeur has an olympic gold metal, Roy has none. Bordeur has 7 40 win seasons, Roy has 1. Brodeur also has 4 seasons with double digits in shutouts, Roy has none. When Brodeur finally retires, he will own just about every goalie record, give the guy credit.
oh yea its not like that at all. brodeur is cleary one of the best ever! im just upset that this commercial is mocking roy whoes time is cleary NOT up. roy will always be one of the best if not the best ever. but yeah i really respect brodeur and think if any goalie deserves to break roy's wins it should be him! just clearing that up
oh that's cool following him since a rookie? it must be exciting counting down the wins now. anyway both goalies have amazing records and accomplishments. the title of greatest ever could really go to either one depending on which way u look at it. but to me roy is the best just cuz he has been my favorite player and the reason i got into hockey I deffinetley see ur point and where u r coming from but i cant agree with you on that lol
A CS is a huge achievement for a goaltender, and Marty's postseason numbers in each of his three Cup year were definitely CS worthy. Please don't get me started on '03- somebody needs to take that thing from Giguere and give it to its rightful owner! Roy did put up with players like Gretzky, Yzerman, and Lemieux in their prime, but keep in mind Brodeur too had to put up with prolific scorers like Jagr, Mogilny, and Lindros. And how bout now with the likes of Ovie, Iggy, Malkin, and Crosby?
Sure, the Devils have continued to be successful w/o Marty this season, but keep in mind a lot of that has to do with Clemmer (Not Weekes) proving himself by being solid in net and Parise/Elias being able to dish out over a PPG. Another reason why I've never seemed to have bought in Roy's greatness was the fact that he was a pure butterfly goalie, as that stance tends to leave the top half of the net very vulnerable. I'd rather go with a hybrid like Brodeur, Hasek, or Nabokov any day over Roy
Mike Richter? Ah yes, the 1 cup wonder. Much like many a Ranger.
Richter was a great goalie, but had a very limited prime. Rangers fans really over blow that 1994 cup team like it was a dynasty. It was an excellent team pieced together by Neil Smith, then quickly faded into the night.
They made a lot of poor personnel decisions which led to the demise. Messier had too much say and unfortunately, Smith had a couple of poor drafts which didn't help. It's amazing Richy won 300 when you consider the serious injuries he had and the lack of support during those dark yrs. How many might he have won with a real team?
ms117 - Not better than Roy? Whatever you say. Roy has a career GAA of 2.54 and Brodeur currently has a career GAA of 2.20. Not forgetting to mention that Brodeur would've already surpassed 600 wins if it wasn't for a lockout and a torn bicep. But hey, maybe your Avs will become a playoff team again in say...five years?
well if you knew anything about hockey ud know the first half of roys carrer he was in a time were a 3gaa was great and he was up against harder shooters like gretzky with smaller pads. so yea for roy to have a 2.54 from the time he played in was amazing. he beat brodeur in the 2001 stanley cup finals has 3 conn symthes most ever, brodeur has 0. more playoffs wins, more cups, and invented the butterfly. what has brodeur done? invented to win on an elite team? pretty sure thats been done before
Invented to win on an elite team? You're telling me Roy had to single-handedly carry a team that consisted of Sakic in his prime, Forsberg, Deadmarsh, Tanguay, Hedjuk, Blake, Foote, and Bourque? Brodeur has managed to still play at the same level WITHOUT the bulwark of Ken Daneyko, Scott Niedermayer, and Scott Stevens. Roy didn't reach 551 wins until age 37. Brodeur could've done it 2-3 years earlier. And I didn't know that Conn Symthe trophies measure how good a goalie is but whatever.
yes ill admit roy had a great team in colorado, but still the defensive support was not as strong as the devils. the aves defence was very offensive forcing roy to take on a hudge workload. in 60 games roy faced over a hundred shots then brodeur did in 75 games on average when the too gaolies overlapped. when roy left the strong colorado team they couldnt even win their division. clemmsen and weekes have and kept the devils in the lead of their divsion. plus roy was a one man team in montreal
The Avs still finished with like what...95-100 pts in 03-04? Plus I'm sure losing Forsberg half the season had something to do with it too. Even in the new NHL, Colorado has still had success up until this season with all of the injury bugs. Brodeur has faced 200-300 more shots per season in the post lockout NHL and has still managed to put up the same numbers, all without the support of Lemaire's trap or two of the league's best all-round defensemen.
dosent matter they still had selanne and karyia in 03-04 and no division title. the habsacup since roy left. cleaery he gave a tremendos amount of support no argument. as does brodeur but even kevin weekes can florish on the devils with thier defence. those last couple seasons truly put brodeur to the test and he proved his excellence. but roy put up with that his entire carrer against harder shooters. plus a conn symthe is a hug achievement for a goalie
This commercial gives you chills ! way to go Marty , we love you !!!

RICHTER'S BETTER!!!!
Carroll1994 2 years ago

But hey, maybe your Avs will become a playoff team again in say...five years?
captainpatrik 2 years ago
well if you knew anything about hockey ud know the first half of roys carrer he was in a time were a 3gaa was great and he was up against harder shooters like gretzky with smaller pads. so yea for roy to have a 2.54 from the time he played in was amazing. he beat brodeur in the 2001 stanley cup finals has 3 conn symthes most ever, brodeur has 0. more playoffs wins, more cups, and invented the butterfly. what has brodeur done? invented to win on an elite team? pretty sure thats been done before
mostlysunny117 2 years ago
Invented to win on an elite team? You're telling me Roy had to single-handedly carry a team that consisted of Sakic in his prime, Forsberg, Deadmarsh, Tanguay, Hedjuk, Blake, Foote, and Bourque? Brodeur has managed to still play at the same level WITHOUT the bulwark of Ken Daneyko, Scott Niedermayer, and Scott Stevens. Roy didn't reach 551 wins until age 37. Brodeur could've done it 2-3 years earlier. And I didn't know that Conn Symthe trophies measure how good a goalie is but whatever.

yes ill admit roy had a great team in colorado, but still the defensive support was not as strong as the devils. the aves defence was very offensive forcing roy to take on a hudge workload. in 60 games roy faced over a hundred shots then brodeur did in 75 games on average when the too gaolies overlapped. when roy left the strong colorado team they couldnt even win their division. clemmsen and weekes have and kept the devils in the lead of their divsion. plus roy was a one man team in montreal
mostlysunny117 2 years ago
The Avs still finished with like what...95-100 pts in 03-04? Plus I'm sure losing Forsberg half the season had something to do with it too. Even in the new NHL, Colorado has still had success up until this season with all of the injury bugs. Brodeur has faced 200-300 more shots per season in the post lockout NHL and has still managed to put up the same numbers, all without the support of Lemaire's trap or two of the league's best all-round defensemen.
captainpatrik 2 years ago
dosent matter they still had selanne and karyia in 03-04 and no division title. the habsacup since roy left. cleaery he gave a tremendos amount of support no argument. as does brodeur but even kevin weekes can florish on the devils with thier defence. those last couple seasons truly put brodeur to the test and he proved his excellence. but roy put up with that his entire carrer against harder shooters. plus a conn symthe is a hug achievement for a goalie
