The rhythm guitar playing in Down For Life, is the thing that gets me headbanging, i`m just saying, he`s really underrated and he deserves way more respect..
Dude comes up with the coolest rhythms. Since 80%+ of any guitarist's playing is rhythm, at least that much of their time practicing should be focused on that.
The thing with downpicking... You really only notice the difference between downpicking and alternate picking if you're using a tube amp, or a really high end solid state.
Something like a line 6, you won't be able to hear the difference very well as the distortion is all digital and fake.
most of these "who's better " coments remind me of the joke, "how many guitarist does it take to screw in a lightbulb? ten, one to screw in the lightbulb, and nine to say 'not bad, but i could've done it better' "
@davemurrayrocks This particular one is from the July 08 issue (the one with Malmsteen on the cover) he dosent make them any more though :( his last lesson was in febuary 09 :(
I completely agree with this guy. I've gotten my down picking near the level of James Hetfield, and it does make a huge difference in the sound. Alt picking is great for thrash, but if you want that good driving crunch feel to the riff, down picking is the way to go.
I know you can really gloat when your downpicking is that fast, but honestly, alternate picking is better, in terms of ease of the hand, AND for that good clean sound. I really think that if you're really good, you can make alternate picking sound just as heavy as all downstrokes..
Alex Skolnick is an amazing guitarist-but Eric Peterson doesn't get the respect he deserves for laying down all that rhythm for Testament.Kind of like how Kerry King get all the glory and Jeff Hanneman gets thrown under the bus!!!
@Morelloforever Yeah I guess Cliff got thrown under the bus literally(not cool btw) and Cliff Burton actually put the bass out front-something that never really happened before him.But Cliff inspired millions of kids to pick up the bass and make it just as important as the guitar or drums and step to the front of the stage instead of hiding in the dark of the back of the stage.I play guitar and bass but in my band I only played bass and C.B. was a huge inspiration in what I tried and sound like.
@38decembers I think everyone recognizes Eric Peterson as one of the greatest rhythm guitarists of all time, and I always thought that most people (erroneously IMO) considered Jeff the better guitarist than Kerry.
@Marcus666Sund Yeah no doubt,I think true guitar players would put Jeff above Kerry. But maybe Jeff is not so public as Kerry is with the guitar covers and guitar columns.
@38decembers Kerry King is the rythym guitarist majorly and Jeff Is A WAY BETTER GUITARIST than he is. People only like Kerry because he looks like a badass. but comparing the two guitarists really is like comparing Dave Lombardo to Lars Ulrich
@henrydarr8 I think Kerry might be more poplar as seen by Slayer fans or whatever, but I think actual guitar players appreciate what Jeff does on a differant level.Lead guitar players seem to have more of a following I think compared to rhthym guitar players in general but to each their own I guess.Regardless Jeff & Kerry and Alex & Eric work well together and we all as fans benefit from it.
@38decembers Well said. Too many people focus on who plays better, more people should be focusing on who plays WELL together. Look at Hetfield....probably one of the best heavy metal rythym players of all time, Hammett has nothing on his rythym playing, but Hetfield has nothing on Hammetts lead work(say what you want about it).
@BeardShorts Yeah the best bands in metal history have guitarists that mesh together nicely.James & Kirk,KK & Glen,Alex & /Eric,Adrian & Dave and all the rest.Just like the bassist and drummer have to work together, the lead and rythym need to click-couldn't have said it better myself.
true, kirk lost his guts, listen to ajfa and then listen to death magnetic,he can do much better+ he ain't a child anymore he has to focus on some good solos aggain and stretching boundries.
@mitchwheelz there is no right way to hold a pick. Whatever way is the most comfortable to each individual is the right way to hold it. Marty Friedman holds his pick really weirdly, but he is one of the best guitarists of all time.
@mitchwheelz lol i totally agree dude fuck slayer dude oooooooo the bands name is slayer they must be badass oooooo they portray evil themes oooo fucking posers they couldnt play a solo if there life depended on it
@FaggonDraggon yeah man he is a better guitarist! but kerry has also gotten better over the years, but from the first album off, hanneman always was better,in guitarsoloing and songwriting !
@amaranthinagony I was thinking exactly the same thing. I suppose it's because it's hard to pick at the speed he played the first riff with down picking
Well every deathcore/metalcore band seems to rip-off Meshuggah these days, but additionally, the vast majority of the 'genre' is just a silly watered down version of actual Modern Death Metal aimed at trendy high school scene douches, hence, "Scenecore". Scene faggots listening to "HARDCORE MUSIC, FUCK YEAH".
@donSparda Some highly pretentious uncreative hipster bullshit where the bands tune the guitars down damn near an entire octave and abuse the low string. then they overly compress the mix to hid the fact that they are just playing one note. Those assholes fucked over Meshuggah and Dream Theater's ideas.

@element5333 When you alternate pick, you get a different sound then downpicking, like when you do an upstroke it has a higher pitch to it i guess.
