@cadnyc I actually still love this thing. They did recently come out with new models, but via software update, several of those were added to this model. Either way, it still bests almost anything on the market. Traffic can be spotty at times, but better performance than I've had from other competing units.
@NguyenEmpir3 Agreed. I don't know why they make anything with resistive touch screens anymore. Capitative looks much better. I'd buy something like this just for the looks compared to most other GPS that are available.
Hi - Read a few reviews all mentioning the time this GPS takes to acquire satellites. How long does it take ? is it the range of a minute or two, or more ? Thanks !
@BikeretteORen It's going to depend. I have worked with Garmin, Tom Tom, Magellan, and several for the iPhone (with and without an extra receiver). It doesn't take much more than most. In a few situations it took a bit, but once connected it was extremely fast, especially at recalculating. Other times, especially if you turn it on in the same location you turned it off, it was fine. It took maybe a minute at most, but that's all.
Decent review. I found the title on the left portion of the video distracting after awhile, but that's all right, I appreciate you putting in the time to do a review. I'm tempted to get one, but I already have a perfectly good old Garmin 660 I barely use.
The 3790 is very feature rich, so it's hard to touch on every single point, isn't it? It really is a good-looking device, like an ipod touch or iphone. Very neat looking. Maybe I'll pick up an LMT version in a couple years on the cheap.
@gene2u Thanks. I was working with a new camera and no tripod. I kept slipping. This one was definitely a hard review. It is so slim and has so many little things about it that put it above the others. I have had 5 Garmin GPS' over the past few years and this is the best one I have had.
Now that I have had some time, I have noticed a few minor issues. Sometimes it takes a bit to acquire satellites even when in the open. It also had some issues when trying to update.
@magicmn717 Wow, that's a lot of Garmins. I was interested in the 1390 LMT as well, but I read some not very flattering reviews on it, so I think I'll stick with the 660. It's the devil I know, and I'm used to it's issues. Some people claim to prefer their older version nuvis more than the ones they bought to replace them.
I hope they sort out the issues with the 3790 for you. It really is a gorgeous device.
@gene2u Well, my main reason for getting this was the capacitive touch screen. The old school resistive ones that are common in most GPS I couldn't deal with. You had to add a decent amount of pressure, and the edges weren't very receptive. The capacitive like that is on iPods, iPhones and the like works much much better.
@magicmn717 Ah, yes, that is a big improvement. The nuvi 660 drives my wife nuts since she has to press so hard. I thought it was just because I have a fairly rigid screen protector on it. I guess it's really because of the resistive screen.
@gene2u It is. The screen protector amplifies it though. With the cost of capacitive screens right now, you'd think they could afford to make more of their GPS units have them.
@magicmn717 I decided to test a stylus with my nuvi 660 after our discussion here. It's a big improvement, actually, but it's nowhere near as responsive as a capacitive screen, so you're right. Also, not at all convenient to have to grab and handle a stylus to manipulate the GPS. Might be worthwhile when practical, though.
would you still recommend this gps? hows the traffic on it??
