  • This is such a well written song, and this live version's got a great, smooth feel to it :)

  • She is soooooo underated...She is a re-incarnation of Janis and Marvin....along with lots of others.

  • CLASSIC YOU GO GIRL!

  • sweet Melissa pass the message on....u can do that for me, huh???

  • GREAT cover, but the original was such a part of of my childhood experience.. a mantra, i suppose.

  • Looooooooooooooooooove this song! (I have a Sarah.)

  • That intro guitar is spot on! She has such a sultry voice - I love it!

  • your really i mean really good girl friend

  • I don't usually go in for covers, but this is good! A room full of musicians, no autotune, no Beyonce style vocal hitches, just a woman belting out a classic Hall and Oates (or is it Hall & Oates?) song, and doing a damn good job of it, I might add.

  • cada vez que la escucho me gusta mas

  • She got dat boomlaka laquer. Good stuff..

  • gave me chills! GO JOAN GO!!

  • And there's only one Monte Montgomery who plays and sings the heck out of this song. Go check out one of his shows. Make sure and check that you leave with your jaw because it will be planted firmly on the floor most of the night.

  • @montiac22

    Monte Montgomery is pure cheese.

  • They should remove the dislike button for this song.

I'm glad I discovered Joan Osborne again the other day, hard to believe this is the same lady that sang One Of Us,her voice is beautiful on this H&O classic....love it!

  • Great singing Joan; this is now my favorite version of this song. I was really getting tired of Hall's over emoting on this song.

  • I think Joan has talent, but c'mon folks, this was a very mediocre performance!

What's with the holding of the "e" instead of "i" at :48-49?? Like fingernails on a chalkboard to my ears! If you make changes to the original version, they should enhance the song, not detract from the sexy soulful groove.

With all those extremely talented musicians musicians in the room, you've got to

    BRING IT JOAN~

Check out Monte Montgomery's version for someone who SERIOUSLY DELIVERS!! BABY!!!

  • I think she has talent, but c'mon folks, honestly, this was a very mediocre performance....

what's with the holding of "e" instead of "i" at :49??? That was like fingernails on a chalkboard to my ears...and then an awkward pause in the lyrics and then mumbles something?? All those talented musicians in that room, you've got to BRING IT JOAN!

Have you people heard Monte Montgomery's version??? OH BABY!!!

  • I didn't LOVE IT

    but I also

    did not HATE IT.

She has a long way to go but this song is a step in the right direction.

I also am bias because I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song to death and

as we AAAAAAAALL know there is nothing better than the ORIGINAL.

  • Great singing and playing very pro. Its not the stuff I normally listen to but its very good muscly.

  • awesome, dammit. made my day.

  • I feel Joan is one of the most underrated singers around.Love her version.Check out some of her stuff with the brothers funk.SHe can hold her own.Hope she never stops performing.

  • Joan awakens the sleeping goodness of Timeless Tunes! Great!!

  • I liked it. Couple parts gave me goosebumbs because I thought she couldn't pull it off. She delivered!

  • Very nice-Joan is great.

  • Excellent job! Love it.

  • Dude playing guitar is amazing. Anyone know who he is?

  • ...wonderful song

  • She puts her own "stamp" on these songs. There is only ONE Daryl Hall; and there is only ONE Joan Osborne.

  • First female version I heard, she sounds good.

  • great phrasing ... great soul

  • Not bad, but I have no idea why people bother attempting to cover this song. NOBODY does it better than Daryl....NOBODY!!!!!!!

  • she has the voice but didn't make full use of it.

  • @roscoegino She does seem to be holding back most of the time, doesn't she? I think she let go on the Relish album, then had to pull back 'cause she scared too many people...

  • I never know Morgan Freeman played keyboards

  • Good, nothing wrong with it. Some covers come across as improvements on the original, to me this one is more "another take" but nothing wrong with that.

  • want to hear her really shine, check out standing in the shadows of motown

  • Her voice is so soothing in this vid. Love it

  • WOW!!!

  • If you,re looking for soul the album RELISH, song PENSICOLA enJoy now you're hooked

  • When I heard the album RELISH, with the songs ST Theresa, Man in the long black coat, Pensacola and almost the whole album through she just soul-ed me away and I thought south-ish like Louisana and up pops Canada on the back cover ? Joan osborne is my very favorite singing talent. I feel her songs very deep in my soul. thank you Joan lovley work!

  • Joan has deffinately made this song her own .

  • Excellent performance !

It left me wanting something more from Joan on this song...but it was all the same---perfect---in everyway !

  • I've been listening to this woman for years now and can't name one singer that comes close to her soulful, god-inspired voice. What a gift to humanity.

  • @tony30daywunder You are absolutley correct my friend not one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gifted

  • I hav been thinkin bout this song everytime I hear it.... I hav never even dated a Sara. Joan is also a favorite of mine, much luv

  • Joan is awesome...And she has plenty of soul

  • I like this version.....she got a Bonnie Rait thing goin' on here.

  • love it !!

  • Joan has more soul than deep fryed chicken on a warm sunny sunday

God i love her voice ,sang it baby .

  • This is a great cover..she does have soul! & if you've heard her other music u know she can blow if she wants but this was the sound she wanted and or felt.

  • If you like this version then you need to check out another version by a different artist It is by "Indy South Project" Went to high school with this guy. He is really good.

Keep in mind that, he recorded everything. Recorded every track, and then mixed the final version. I'm sure you won't be disapointed.

  • This is worse then the boys to men cover...

  • Momma you got it going! Push it a lil more!

  • Wow...she is so good...love watching her in studio:)

  • that****is****singing!!!!

  • wow... blows me from my chair ... :-))))

  • i think she has personalized it and made it her own. DH/JO ROCK it their way. I mean i like her voice but we all know she has a different vibe but i bet its amazing for DH/JO to see so many people have remade this song. I love it ...

  • I agree!

  • she has such an amazing voice...

  • She rocks this...............Thank you Joan!

  • Good for American Idol but not half the soul this song command. Thumbs up to Monte Montgomery that really nailed it. Good enough to be invited by Daryl Hall to play it in duet on his TV show "Live from Daryl's House".

    'Just my 2 cents...

  • well i'm not sure if she did justice to the classic...but at least it was cute seeing joan cover this one.. it wasn't bad actually... still enjoyed it =)

  • She has a great voice ect, ect....but good luck delivering with the same soul/passion as Daryl Hall.....Not to mention the song was based on actual life-events of his.

  • I wish Joan would get back together with The Dead. It was really special when she sang with them.

  • Joan can sing with the best of them. Check out her performances on the "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" DVD if you need some evidence! Not to mention her original classic "What if God Was One of Us".

  • Joan can sing with the best of them. Check out her performances on the "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" DVD if you need some evidence!

  • serious ass kissing from the control booth!

  • I'd like to see Daryl and Joan do some songs together

  • ya'll are crazy - this is lush.

  • Excellent Karaoke.

  • @hoopermazing a pretty good middle of the road cover artist..? And how many hits have you had in your career? none? I guess she's got more soul and talent than you then.. just saying..

  • @57panrider She's a better singer than I am. That's for sure. I could play circles around her on the guitar. None of which has anything to do with the ability to recognize a mediocre cover artist. That's some kind of logical fallacy. The name escapes me at the moment, but I'm sure that you could look it up on Wikipedia.

  • @Hoopermazing She was good enough for the Ruffin Broithers. Fool

  • Very Smooth I love it !

  • No matter what color, this lady has much soul the Godfather of soul JB would be proud!!

So please get over it .

  • WOW I LIKE THIS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL! JOAN RULES, SUCH A SEXY HEARTFELT VOICE! GREAT, JUST FANTASTIC!

  • Can this lady sing her songs? Anyone can be a monkey!

  • @rollingthunder02908 then you are an ant!

  • I'm pretty certain Joan Osborne wouldn't be supporting the likes of a piece of crap like Sarah Palin. Can't believe the the bitch is asking for money on this video; thanks google. You just ruined my morning and this great song. Didn't we have enough with the eight years from the male bimbo. The last thing this country needs now is some moose killing ex-beauty queen who can see planes from Russia; the extent of her international education.

  • I've seen her 4 times . . . lucky me! Love this cover!

  • I've seen her 4 times . . . lucky me! Love this cover!

  • If you think this is easy, you should try it. Great cover

  • She feels the music. What a soulfull voice.

  • Wow. She is so multi-faceted. Wish I could find her versin of "Not while I'm around (from Sweeney Todd) ,done on Bravo does Broadway. Love everything she sings...soul,funk,pop...kinda glad she isn't a "star"...but, she has it all!!!

  • how I have loved every side to Joan. Somewhere out the is her singing "Not While I'm Around" from Sweeney Todd done on Bravo does Broadway. No one I know can find this. She made me cry. She is really multi-faceted!

  • Nice cover, but MAN, and not to take away from her obvious talent, Hall&Oates just OOOZE soul! The more I listen to them the more I appreciate their stellar songwriting and execution..

  • @preferre : Daryll Hall has a presence her under "LiveFromDarylsHouse" with some fabulous live sessions with a bunch of artists. He does one "Sara"on his own, and invites Monte Montgomery to play with him on another. Monte's version is a little slower and really pulls a lot out of it. If you get a chance check out the Monte solo version as well as the one with Daryl. I guess I like all the versions. lol.

  • First time for me listening to Joan. What a great voice! Silky, powerful, rich and solid. After all the pop junk that's plastered all over, it's nice to hear someone who can actually sing and hold a note.

  • @martinaxman Yea I agree and she doesn't need any "auto tune" to enhance her voice like today's bunch of "wannabe" singers do. She has great natural acoustic energy!

  • @martinaxman Agreed. And well stated.

  • Sorry, but cannot see anything phoenomenal...

  • Another fantastic cover by Joan. The guitarist (Brandon Ross?) does a great job!

  • I never tire of listening this phenomenal voice.

  • GORGEOUS...I love this song much better now :)

    Great post.....

  • Flawless vocal, Joan is amazing.

  • I know it sounds clichéd but she has soul in her voice. love her

  • She's so-so..kinda flat....but the studio folks are top drawer--especially the guitar players! Nice Bass and lead..

I'd love their fingers and Hall N' Oates voices on the same 16 tracks...That'd be blowing up the house !

  • The original from Hall & Oates is way better...she has a nice voice etc, but the original is just better

  • I have to add that the producer is an arch-fucking-douche-bag.

  • This is okay... but she needs to take soul lessons from Daryl Hall. That white boy had soul coming out his asshole.

  • @Hoopermazing i guess you must be a white boy to only see that.........Joan Osborne's voice is deeper and a unique feel to it so I guess I must say you have a hile in your soul dude if you think or even worse feel that way........

  • @atta That is why you don't get paid to guess. If I was white, I probably wouldn't have referred to Darryl Hall as "that white boy." "White" is usually implied, but unspoken, among white folks, as they suffer under the delusion of white normativity.

  • @Hoopermazing I guess there is some truth to what you say. But I have seen that said from white musicians to other Wmusicians when they sing or play the blues. On a second opinion, talking about soul and feeling Joan has melowed down, yet she still got it BUT the band lacks of that wild feel to it SO I must say i agree to that much.......and Joan does not show that wild talent of hers as she used to.......

  • @Hoopermazing if you think Joan Osborne has to take soul lessons you need to be reborn dude!!

  • @Hoopermazing Amen to the Daryl Hall comment...

  • @Hoopermazing LOLOLOLOLOL

  • @Hoopermazing Soul can not be taught. You either have it..or you don't.

  • @Hoopermazing amazing comment lol

  • @Hoopermazing Yeah, he still owns that song. Nobody does it better.

  • @Hoopermazing literally!!!!

  • @Hoopermazing ....You must be kidding right ? Daryl's good but not even close from Joan, com' on. Daryl force his voice and do not have a natural groove... Joan has this magic "black" sould in her...

  • @F3FisGoodforYou Daryl is 100 times better...and what does "black" soul have to do with it? Daryl put his OWN soul into it.

  • @hyperion30000 ...Daryl do not support the comparison with Joan... it's like comparing Aretha Franklin with Jennifer Lopez or Marvin Gaye to Michael Bolton.... I say again, Daryl is good but he sing soul for white guys like Michael Bolton does. You are certainly a white guy who is more sensitive to this kind of white soul closer to rock than blues (the fact that you wonder what "black" soul has to do with it say it all). It's your taste but don't insult Joan by comparing her to Daryl.

  • @Hoopermazing I think she does better, this version of the song is smoother sounding than Hall and Oates. I like it, just not as much as this.

  • thumbs up !!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a great voice!

  • amazing

  • Hall & Oates can/t make it better.Great!!!!

  • OHMYGOD! Joan you really are a truly, truly great singer - wow! Thanks!!!! I just found this song today!

    Nina Alivirta

  • You go girl........................

  • Love it!

  • @12Jetdiver55 Big Man!! (That's called sarcasm there big guy)

  • @12Jetdiver55 and you spell like an ignorant lout!

  • That Osborne is full of soul

  • To hear a woman sing this song sounds great.... I want to sing it too....

  • I agree with PROGROCKMAN 100% ..... Great cover !

  • what an amazing voice, where you been all my life ?

  • I'm a HUGE fan of hers, but this song (vocally speaking) tops any song she's ever sang. imho

  • we still have talent in our country folks, just that she is underrated because she does not tart it up and try to be outragious, It's unfortunate that the lesser talents who go tto extremes dance and practically dress like Babylonian whores get all the attention+

  • Every song that Ms. Osborne sings she takes and makes it her own. Yet another stellar performance from one of the most underrated singers of our times.

  • Yes! Its his Son! :) Really cool cat! You need to check out his FUNK band called Dumpstaphunk!!!

  • my name is sarah and my life hasn't been toooo good so i like this song because she reminds me to smile once in a while

  • @sarahmunch1 where were you born and raised? I remember the sticks of north Idaho where everybody is on meth and they fight for a hobby, if only the suburban soccer moms could see that.

  • @mryuck206 I was born and raised in Denmark, why?

  • @sarahmunch1 just curious cuz u were saying about your life hasnt been so good. just wondered where you were from.

  • i like this song, my name i sarah and my life hasn't been that good so she reminds me about that its important to smile once in a while:)

  • WOW! That is Ivan Neville on Keys!!!!! AHHHHHH .... I havent seen him in forever!!!

  • @LeighAnnie18 Any relation to AARON Neville?

  • Beautiful . You and the band .

  • gostei muito................

  • I say that it's great if you like watered down beer.

  • I didn't recognize which Holiday Inn Express they're playing. Is that Toledo? Scranton? Hopefully she can read the writing on the wall... says EXIT. Makes one embarrassed to be white.

  • @CCConservatory You obviously spend a lot of time at budget motels? Or pretend to? Weirdo. LOVE Joan's voice. Give her more respect, people. Never knew this song before. Love this studio clip and the CD version, too. Aaaaamazing.

  • @derekific -- and @novaracer.... Fine -- you love it. I (and others) don't. WTF ... are you a comment cops? Does everybody have to agree with you or you get your panties in a twist? Just maybe other people know something you don't. if you like this song, like it and leave it at that.

  • @potosi21, You are a fucking altra moron. What the hell do you mean "wrong key"? She's singing the same signature notes as the hall & Oates version. If you know nothing about music, and it's painfully obvious you don't, you shouldn't comment.

  • @novaracer1 couldn't have said it better myself ! I like and appreciate BOTH versions of this great song. Written to honor his collaborator/girlfriend of 28 years Sara Allen. (Her sister, Janna Allen, co-wrote their 2nd #1 hit "Kiss On My List." (Janna died of leukemia in 1993.)

  • proffesional musicians

  • Just awesome! Love it !!!

  • sounds good. like the intro and Joan does great singing this old song.

  • i know there are a lot of joan osborne fans out there.

she's talented for sure; but something is missing. there is no real distinction from other voices/singers.

mabe that's so why many of her fans feel she is overlooked.

  • it's lacking...no soul.

  • She is so good! I always liked Hall & Oats for producing amazing music. This would not be easy to sing.

  • white girls can't sing

  • Am I missing something here people? I like Joan Osborne, but this was not good at all. She murdered this song.

  • @504ish yup. you're missing something.

  • @504ish murdered is slang for she killed it in a good way. fyi.

  • @roscoegino Well, I meant it in the "not good way....FYI.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG AMAZING

  • I adore her.

  • 3 words....It's not her's. That's why.. Talented yes but.

  • yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i m SMILING:)

  • She knocked the cover off this cover. Go Joan!

  • Why isn't Joan Osbourne more famous?!

  • Joan Osbourne is a brilliant singer. She hit this song out of the park. It's perfect. It captures the mood and time of the original. I'm from Philly and I know!

  • Amazing.....you go Joan Osborne!

  • she made this song "hers". i love it, never been fond of the original. you can sing it for me any day, as long as it's your way.
