I got to see Dora when I was a kid surfing Malibu in the mid 60's. Many surfers came to "The Bu" and Dora always stood apart. His fluid style still stands apart in these films. But it was the lifestyle he perfected - following Tom Blake. Miki came from a very wealthy Montecito family. He was an elitist that went beyond "pro". He was among the last of the "great white hunters" of the nineteenth century like Alistair Crowley climbing K2. A relic pointing to the future - find your own island!!
Miki Dora was RIGHT from the beginning.....The BEATNIKS were too! Now we are buried by MEDIA viewpoints, clones, and banker-crooks. Even remote locations are influenced by delusional television personalities --try working with them in real Hollywood and you'll see why Miki and so many others were repelled by them! Stinky SICK MONKEYS of which many are sadly homophobic and neurotically competitive, but all of them are un-original and cowardly un-adventurous! Go Miki you were right from the start.
stop saying he's the number 1 surfer in california, because he wouldnt give a shit if he was or not and he would probably punch you in the face if you said that to him in person. RIP Miki
Miki did exactly what he wanted to do in life, how many others can say that! I don't agree with the way that he treated people at times but it was his life and he lived it on HIS terms which is honorable and respectable...
thanks Mick...you were the original...one of a kind...absolute stand alone take no bullshit above it all could care less wave-rider...god put you here to ride waves...glad we caught your show...no one else ever like you.
I spoke to Miki 3 times in my life. Once at a Halloween party at the Malibu Pier. Once when he lost his board in 20' surf at Rincon and lastly when he saw me wearing these knee high moccasins. He wore an Indian costume at the Halloween party and sat down next to me at a wine booth. He said, "Well, it's not from the Bordeux Region of France, but it should get the job done." He was intelligent and friendly. I don't know why, but he took a liking to me. Maybe it's because I wasn't star struck.
@lorduenon Great story, I respect Dora and know a little about him even though I know nothing about surfing. I'm a musician and I gave up everything for it ten years ago. It sounds like a clique now to say your following your dream. People who haven't done it do not know how hard it is. It's not just what you give up....
Born 1934-not 32 must have spaced out-he was surfing during WW-2 he's The #1 California Surfer All-Time easy one of a handful of best in world history
Surf Craze kids-Miki's right it was an Invasion & everybody I knew from Santa Cruz to San Diego wanted to surf like Da Cat-He didn't have to push people off his waves at his surf spot for most of three decades till the Hords & Clones showed up-The Iconoclastic Icon Legedary Revoltionary & Nortious #1 Pure Surfer.
Good & Bad he was an American Classic

The book-although great-is really very sad. Miki's life was virtually over at age 24-1958-- & he spent the last 45 years trying to be 24 @ Malibu again. Pathetic-- eating health food & vitamins, but couldn't afford a physical exam to maybe catch the cancer in time. Accurately described by a probation officer as "immature& irresposible"--but I would love to know what the jail/prison psychiatrists had to say.

Dora has been #1 California surfer for me personally for 47 years.
Not going to stop saying it because you say stop.that's for sure.
That he didn't care about it is another reason he's #1
