@darrin42 In 'em old days, the african american were so poor, they will take morphine to forget about the reality and hardship of life. it's a song about the struggle of living day to day knowing that you will die someday.

@orpado1968 No, this song was written at a time when they were introducing heroin as a less addictive alternative to morphine (laughable in retrospect, but doctors then didn't know much about it). This song was written to object to the replacement of heroin.
