The film is based on the novel by French Choderlos de Laclos. The original sentence is "Ce n'est pas ma faute". So, for your information,Moijdl, it's not a translation into French but the other way round. "It's beyond my control" is actually the English translation...
To the "several other women" Christopher Johnson IV bragged on Twitter about bedding behind my back: here is the man, the cheat, the liar. OohChrisDavid, "it's beyond my control". And yes, "it's that woman", Mariana Tosca, the Marquise Merteuil of this story, who approves of and helps him cover up his psychopathic serial abuse of women. Luckily, the Tourvel's of this day and age have internet access. Ladies, you are hereby warned.
Everytime I watch the pain in Monseiur Vicomte de Valmont's eyes, the deep breaths he has to take to be able to say these things to her, his voice, his eyes........................ I CUM!!!..... it's beyond my conbtrol!! ;P
You can tell that he REALLY does not want to do this...he keeps repeating "it's beyond my control" but you can see his mouth quivering and his voice cracking at times. He literally has to look away from her at certain points because he can't bear to see the pain that he's causing her (and him). Then he tries to make her hate him by being physically rough with her. Heartbreaking. Brilliant acting by Malkovich, Michelle plays the heartbroken mistress well.
The only weakness in this film- a lapse in the direction really-is it never made clear why Tourvel being so happy in her marriage falls so utterly for Valmont to the point she actualy died of a broken heart. Ok they married for convience then..but had she not really loved her husband its not much of a conquest really. And I think they should have addressed that to make the film more believeable. You can see before Valmont does that he's in love with her..but not the other way.
A great powerful scene...he adored her but broke up because of the Markese's mind games....in the end they both died for love...Love does not end after a break up or after one stops seeing or being with another...it would be easy if that happened.
Love does not die.It is there to haunt torment ruin one who denies or defies it....
Don't forget the movie is an adaptation of a french book called Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and in this book, we don't know if Valmont is in love with Tourvel. The real sentence is not "It is beyond my control" but "it is not my fault". Stefen Frears changed the end of the movie.
I believe Valmont loves her in the book as well, the way he talks about her, and that would explain why he let Danceny kill him. Besides, 'it's beyond my control' is a great and powerful translation, in this context, for "ce n'est pas ma faute". :)
wow beyond coldblooded.. i would have bashed his head in. especially after he pushed me down and pulled my hair like that.. what a massive douchebag..
absolutely brilliant acting by malkovich. every line is performed with different inclination and tone. you can see the pain in his eyes too, which makes it easier to watch this heartbreaking scene
I was just reading this scene, and couldn't stop myself from watching this again. It is a great book, and this is a wonderful adaptation. You can't find faithful, quality-filled adaptations like this one anymore.
This just really happened to me a week ago, with a man i think is better looking than John Malkovich, after 6.5 years. I am like the Michele P character and a devout christian. I felt like i had been shot. I am not sure if it was " an act " on his part, because in my heart i know. I am not going to let this kill me. I do not see how he is going to live with himself. Watching this is CATHARSIS to me...emotional release.
He seems so sorry... I still remember whenI saw the film, I had butterflies in my stomach! Even if it seems ridiculous, this scene is really touching when you enjoyed the movie.
And so dramatic when you know the end! Ah... Loved it! ^^
@Solesole16- read the book. Or watch the movie in it's entirety. You're misinformed and it's really worth the effort to read it. I know you'd be fascinated by the plot. It's a brilliant story. THEN when you watch it, this scene will be even more devastating than it already seems..:)
I think he's saying the contrary, actually. :) Not "it's not you, it's me" but "my love has difficulties lasting your vertue" = What he really wanted was...well, sex. Now that he got it, he's not interested in her anymore. And when he says "It's beyond my control", he's saying it's men's nature to be like this, so that she shouldn't be reproaching him anything.
I admit I've only seen parts of it. But I read the book, studied it and we spend a lot of time on this part, when he breaks up, and he says exactly the same here than in the book. But please, explain your point of view and tell me why I'm wrong.
To repeat an empty sentence that doesn't mean anything, to make her suffer and consume Glenn Close's revenge. But in reality he is in love with her. That's the tragedy, So, in a sense, it really is 'beyond his control'. He is in Glenn Closes's control.
I studied the book years ago, so i don't really remember it that well. But the movie is another 'entity', to be understood in itself. Just watch the whole movie! It's a masterpiece.
Valmont vas in love with Tourvel. But he has been manipulated by Merteuil, who forced him to leave Tourvel, by saying that being is love is a cowardice for a libertine ... He's in love with tourvel, but he left her to keep his "pride".
Yup, I read the book and is actually quite funny the way Valmont letters reveal his love without he noticing it. And Merteuil seems even more twisted than in the film! Very funny plot!
It isn't simply pride that drives him its ideology. Libertines didn't believe in love, they believed in things that went against the bibles values which included love so, confused and utterly lost and feeling that he has betrayed himself, he believes merteuil and trusts her for guidance for he has betrayed himself and doesn't know what to do.
Oh...now I understand that this phrase I have heard in Mylen Farmer's song)))That was his voice))Ohhhh...I love Michelle and Mylene))Wonderful))Why did not they include Michelle's voice in a song?!)))
One of my fav films of all time. brilliant dialogue and excellent acting with great passion. John M is soo very good always. You believe him. Tough/good/sad scene done with great sensitivity. Indeed the way of the World
yes. a fantastic and sublime study of sexual politics at its most cunning and dastardly level. and yes, he loved her, but I agree he killed her, albeit indirectly.
