someone ALMOST killed my horse brisco the other day, when I found out, i went NUTS! apprently the owner of the barn had used him for his little nephew to ride and rode him for 5 hours in the RAIN and put him aways WET. thank God Debbie (a friend of mine) was there when it happend. She saved him... I would've been lost without Brisco.

CybilBennett66 - mostly it just throws them off balance because one leg is now about 1/2 an inch shorter than the other three. Depending on what decipline this can hardly be a problem to making it so the horse shouldn't be ridden. Other than that the shoe is to protect the feet, so if they step on something hard it could really hurt, but the act of losing the shoe, generally, isn't a big deal unless the nail pulls at the hoof, which I've never seen happen =]

also, the hoof wall weakens when fitted with a shoe, because the hoof can't function normally by flexing and absorbing the shock, and helping pump the blood up from the legs. when the shoe comes off abruptly, the hoof is very tender, weak, soft, and it's an unusual feeling that the horse hasn't experienced in a long time.

@HelenaBonhamCaterxxo Shoes are actually good in some circumstances and the nails if done properaly do not go into any nerves. the frog is a dead part of their hoof kinda like a fingernail to a human. i always put my horse first and i put shoes on them cause it helps protect their feet from getting stones and stuff in them when jumping and stuff. on some horses their hooves are strong enough to go barefoot but some horses hooves are really soft and they need shoes

@HelenaBonhamCaterxxo Putting shoes on horses doesn't hurt them. Their hooves have no feeling, they're like hair, or fingernails. When done properly, it doesn't hurt the horse at all, it helps them. With horses, someone can decide if they need shoes or not. If they don't need them, they aren't put on!

@CybilBennett66  I think in this case it's more the hard stones than the loss of the shoe itself that's the problem. Normally losing a shoe isn't so bad, but on this rough road a hoof gets cut to pieces once it loses the protection of the metal shoe.
