Not a bad how to vid. But maybe you should get your "lovely assistant" to help with the recording. Just saying. Anyway, I'm getting ready to do my TJ Dana 44 front axle pinion bearings and seal. I dialed up this vid to see the spacifics on the how to put the pinion nut back to proper torque specs or get it close WITHOUT a torque wrench. One vid I saw said you should be able to spin the yolk about three times with a "flick of the wrist" when there is proper torque on the new bearings, (PRELOAD).
@ironreign44 Truthfully I'm lucky to get what help I did from my "lovely assistant." She was much more game to help and hang out when we were dating. Now.... I'll take what I can get.
@chrism1367 Back in the 1990's we had AMAZING roads to climb. No you have to drive 4 hours to Moab, Utah to get good climbing action. The Federal Gov't closed all the roads to prevent erosion.... and the roads all went soft and eroded away into ditches.
This is surprisingly similar to the Dana 44, though I have never gone after that pinion seal. Is there a vent tube for this axle that you should check for patency? Did you need to use a spreader to get the diff back in? How do you get the correct torque/compression for that crush washer? If you don't have a press, can you do this job with hand tools?
@spelunkerd The vent tube is on the shifter housing. No spreader needed. The crush sleave on this one is a BEAST to crush. When the slop in the bearing is gone you stop crushing. You can do it with a vise and a hammer, but I strongly recommend a press for control.
Excellent! I If we keep them, I have a couple of 60's to monkey with. Those universal caps always give me grief, don't know if I've taken off one of mine that I didn't have to use heat on. How many miles on that truck? Looked like you just replaced the starter too? You and your gold and silver friends cracking me up :) . I got a funny feeling you were impacting with that extension, was that the Chineses fault too? ;) ,or was that just beastly Brian torque?

great vid! i would like to suggest for people who have rusty brake lines like me to remove the brake master cylinder cover before pressing on the brake piston to avoid blowing out a line. Nice bike in the background, i use to ride a ZX-12R.
Good Video! Lots of useful information.

@Jerroh6 Good call. I've never blown one due to rust, but if I were to blow one I'd rather blow it in the garage than on the road.
