@Mrmtjones - A SIM card is a "Subscriber Identity Module", as such it just identifies your phone with your network - so as it knows what network to connect to. It used to be used often to save your contacts to, but now most phones just use their internal storage because you can't hold many contacts on the SIM card. Therefore, your old contacts are on your old phone memory.

P.S.: See if your contacts are held on your SIM by going Settings > Mail, Contacts, ... > Import SIM contacts.
