...Why was the voice acting in this not only better than Super Wing Commander on 3D0, but at points, even better than the voice acting in Wing Commander II?
Really, most of these people do such a good job, why didn't they just re-hire them?
Oh god, WHY did they change the music? The PC had AMAZING music (and the Amiga, SNES and whatever versions were good too, as they at least had a version of the PC music). At least there is voice acting.
this was my first ever space combat game (SNES version though) 2nd wing commander was my first ever CD ROM game. Really wish they'd revive the series.
Plenty of nostalgia here. Man, I always thought to Kilrathi were so funny though lol! They represent an especially rediculous species of extraterrestrials.
I remember a favored tactic of mine was to corrale the enemy ships together, periodically tearing into them when they were all together (what would be hilarious often would be that they would sometimes end-up destroying eachother, getting caught in eachother's crossfire and I destroy nearly a whole squadrin without ANY effort LOL!)
Please note that the poster of this video says that he enjoyed the movie adaptation.
WHAT THE F***?
Besides being a horrible film, it also is largely responsible for the DEATH of the franchise and a major contributor to the DEATH of the genre. That movie was a bigger mistake than Vietnam.
A bit late 2 say this lol...yeah I didn't like the movie either but I don't think it's fair to blame the movie production for the fall of WC. First off EA bought off Origin, we kno what happens when an MBA dominated company takes over a developer oriented 1 (same w/ westwood studios). Also after a point, space sims simply fell out of favour from the mass market. I dunno why tho....Freespace 2 tried to reseurrect this genre but failed.
The description says that the PCCD version had speech like this. Was this actually the case? The only version I ever saw was a shovelware release bundled with Wing Commander II. It was just the same as the floppy version with all the expansions included. No speech in that version, at least not in Wing I.
This was the first version of Wing Commander I played. I always liked the music in this one more than the PC version, and the voice acting is excellent.
It's Cam Clarke. Also voices Leonardo and Rocksteady from the 80's turtles. Also voiced the blood elf male in world of warcraft and he-man: masters of the universe. brilliand voice actor.
Actually this game is really bad. I'm not sure why people think this version is so great, but I have it, and it's awful. I picked it up recently for the first time, along with Robo Aleste, Soulstar, and Thunder Strike, which far surpass anything Wing Commander has to offer.
The Sega CD was more powerful than most people realised at the time it was released. It wasn't a crappy system, it just never got to reach it's full potential.
@PocholoMaricon If we could somehow merge the sound and graphics from the Kilrathi Saga version with the voice acting from this version, we'd have the perfect version of Wing Commander.
He's trying way too hard in this game, though. Everyone's completely hamming it up. Especially Paladin.
Och laddie, get a load of me completely ovardun Scottish brrrrogue! It's so thick ye can't oonderstand anything Oi'm talkin' aboat! John Rhys-Davies in Wing Commandar Tree, he 'as nuthin' on me own accent!
The PC version was better.
Oxxor77: The music isn't really worse because of the sound hardware, it's worse because every single piece of music was torn out and replaced with a worse one.
The load times look pretty wretched, and the music isn't as good as on PC, but boy oh boy... I had no idea that a speech-enabled Wing Commander existed! I wonder why it never came out on PC?
Probably due to ROM memory limitations, CD's having considerably more space for the same cost. (at the cost of long load times with the relatively slow disc drives of the time)
To have voice over, you must hire actors, actresses, the director, and hire a sound recording studio or paid Sega the rights for this voice over for the CD-32 (the Sega CD version was developed and distributed by Sega under license from Electronic Arts, which was the parent company of Origin Systems at the time).
Faced with having to pay extra to get voice over, despite the capability of the CD-32, Commodore may have just ported the Amiga version straight over to the CD-32 (more than an easy enough task to do, considering the hardware) and was done with it, especially as the CD-32 wasn't successful and Commodore didn't have much funds to commit to anything elaborate.
I doubt Origin would have invested money and effort into a CD-32 port themselves, leaving Commodore to do it under license.
I withdraw a claim made on who developed and distributed the Sega CD version.
Electronic Arts was the distributor. I do not know who was responsible for the port, but GameFAQs claims that the port was developed by Game Arts, which is a Japanese developer famous for the Grandia and Lunar series as well as Silpheed. I am not confident in this info, though it may explain why, for one thing, the music is so dissimilar on the Sega CD version compared to all other versions, including the original.
ironic is they way they are treating a "wing commander". that is the rank you have when you are stationed at a base. you are over the entire base. and i mean EVERYBODY!
The speech was really good, though I always pictured the man holding the mission briefing speaking with a much deeper voice, something like Sisko in Deep Space Nine, looks like a rather good port of the game, though it did look a bit slow at times, and the music was nowhere as good as in the other versions.
I once dug up this game just to hear how they did Iceman's voice. I was quite disappointed. Somehow they figured out a guy who tends to speak in whispers should sound like he's got a husky, panting voice like he's a stalker making a phone call.
there are two PC versions of the first game as well, the original DOS version and an updated Windows version released in the late 90's in the "Kilrathi Saga" pack (also including Wing Commander 2 and 3). I do think that the PC versions are the most enjoyable to play, though they certainly miss that voice acting. The Amiga version had better renditions of the music, but was far worse when it came to the sound effects (since the amiga only had 4 channels and couldn't do the fx and music at once).
Really?! i always thought he was more of an R. Lee Earmy-Type guy... Especially after that idiot Maniac Opened his mouth and something about scrubbing lavaoratories and if he gave you any flack, Halcyon mentioned your character shooting his ass with ships guns instead of missles and saving them for more important targets.
Whats with the video once you finally launch? And is it just me or does it look slow? I grew up playing WC so it's not just me not being used to an old game.
This is a gem, after playing this game for 15 years+ on the PC it's weird to hear the voices assigned by Origin. They all sound pretty much how I imagined, Spirit seems to have a different voice than in WC2 and Halcyon sounds younger than I imagined. They should have made this voice pack for the PC, but in 1990 your average 386 wouldn't have hacked it.
I'm sorry but that's wrong . Game Arts handled the Mega CD/SEGA CD version . You're right about Cam Clarke though , I'm sure he does one of the voiced on the characters in Grandia II and Spiderman Vs Kingping
Why couldn't they have made a speech pack for the PC version. I will admit there are suttle differences but I think I prefer the PC version for the music and stuff like that, but I do like this.

Hey, even some of the worst films may find people who appreciate them.
In all honesty, the "Wing Commander" movie wasn't that bad as far as video game based movies are concerned.
It wasn't very good, but it could've easily been worse. MUCH worse!
It could've been like the "Super Mario Bros." movie or "Street Fighter!"
Now those were movies that were as much of a mistake as global thermonuclear war.
Watcher3223 2 years ago
the street fighter manga wasnt that bad

That may be true.
I was talking about the live action "Street Fighter" movie with Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile.

As for "death of the franchise," I'm not so sure about that.
The "Wing Commander" series was basically over after the 4th installment.
