Blackmore didn't, and Gillan didn't want to. Blackmore said in an interview that they would only focus on the typical 'Made In Japan' set, combined with new MK.II songs. When 'Burn' was performed in 1991 with JLT on vocals, it was JLT that suggested that they'd do it as an opener. Lord wanted to do that as well. Glover never disagreed, he just loves to play Live, and he has said that 'Burn' is the best song he thinks DP did when he wasn't in the band.
Imagine Glenn singing 'Child In Time' w. Purple. Glenn had the range. Coverdale did not. Only Gillan and Glenn could have pulled it off. Joe Lynn Turner tried and failed A LOT in 1991.
And what´s the matter if Coverdale or Turner couldn't ( or didn't bother to) sing child in time? They are great singers anyway ( though I must admit I'm not a Turner fan at all)
@backdoorloverboy Glenn was brilliant in 1974-75. In 1976, his drug addiction started to affect his voice and screaming. I agree though. Coverdale and Hughes could have done 'Child In Time' great together I think during the 'Burn/Stormbringer' days, when Ritchie was still in the band. That song is far from Bolin's cup of tea unfortunatly.
@SilverTounge85 the come taste the band period was infuriating in a way-a fantastic record that should have led to more, but the bands personal habits wrecked it.
It´s a difficult choice. For me Hughes is the greatest rock vocalist ever, but my favourite purple records are with Gillan. Gillan developed the original Deep Purple sound and it was the perfect voice for that time and showed the world how to sing heavy metal.
@theidealcopy Just compare Hughes' and Coverdale's careers... David was much more sucessful than Glenn. Whitesnake became a monster of rock, and it still is... Glenn is a very good singer, but always tries to reach the highest notes, just like he tries to prove he's the best. David's voice is a little more bluesy, and he he's a more talented songwriter.
Hughes' best band ever. Guitarists Eric Bojfeldt and Thomas Larsson are dynamite together. Burning Japan Live is an amazing CD never tire of listening to it.
It takes tight pants to compress the testicles into a tight wad for the word "time" on the vocal bridge. I only know a couple of people who can hit that note, and it's frustrating that he's still hitting it in his late 50s.
He has said in London, a few months ago...he's got 1 ball only, thats why his voice is so high pitched, but the drummer ( Red Hot) has got long dick!!!
You're joking! Did he say that?! Where?! Maybe that's the secret to reach such high notes!!!!! Just to do away with one of those elements that deepen your voice'?
How can be Gillan, stupid. He never sing Burn. Great Hughes, sing like "mothers". I'm from Chile and i know all carrer of D.Purple.- (Com dicen que no es Gillan , si nunca cantó Burn. Grande Hughes, canta como los mejores)
hey 19 ricker. you actaully 19?? im only 18 LOL....... i have the version of which during the muscle and blood guitar solo some text comes up on the screen saying "awesome" its literally about less than 2 seconds, i have no damaged songs on my version... mine was sourced from a vcd as well
i have this whole show on dvd...... i personally think this is more energetic performance than the burning japan cd..... i love the performace of "i got your number" on this dvd

Pitty that Blackmore didn't forced Gillan to sing some Mk III songs on reunion tours in the 80's and 90's.

Coverdale had good range on come taste the band tour but in lower registers than Hughes...
But I think that Glenn alone or with David would have made a good version of Child In Time if they only wanted...

Hughes was easily Purples best vocalist, should have got to sing lead more

You really think that? I think that Ian is better...really...just a great voice

I am a bit weird like that cos 'Come Taste the Band' is my fave Purple album, 'This Time Around' is just such a beautiful track.
I think Glenn complimented DC really well back then, they should get together again
