It's not all down to the ships, but the people who sail them. And we Brits are made of some pretty hard stuff. Especially in Nelson's day, god rest his soul.
This would never happen. The HMS Victory was made to take alot of damage and deal it. The USS was made to beat anything it couldn't outrun, and outrun anything it couldn't over power.
Whoever was driving the Constitution in this vid has a lot to learn about tactics. Frigates can take on first rates alone, I've done it in ETW and I take smaller ships against larger ones all the time in another ship game called Pirates of the Burning Sea. The problem here is the Constitution's driver doesn't take advantage of Victory's main weakness, slow speed and lack of maneuverability. You could stern camp by zigzagging across Victory's stern using bar shot, then finish her with round.
apples and oranges. The USS Constitution was much more advance than HMS Victory, but she's still just a frigate. No matter who cutting edge a cruiser may be, she is no battleship or in this case ship of the line. Also, often people then to compare things that have different missions; frigates were optimal for long range raids, ship of the line for slug fest.
I keep thinking, wouldn't it be awesome if you captured the other ship in a campaign and used both of them in the same fleet? That would be wonderful.
see the uss Constitution aka ironside was a very good ship and people say that it would have won but if you have actually been on the ship they tell you about how they always won now that sounds like it would lead to a very cocky crew who would probably have tried to take on a ship[ as big as the Victory for the prestige (and by the way i researched what kind of ships the Constitution fought and they where all ships which had smaller crews.) Victory would always win hands down. GO ENGLAND
No matter how much I love the USS constitution and it's iron like sides, I'm going to have to say the hms victory would without a doubt beat the hell out of the USS constitution.
theirs only one problem the captain of the victory would have tried to get alot closer to the constitution then in this video plus both would have been far more careful not to have their stern racked repeatedly.
It seems to me we have a cheetah vs. lion going on but this video both are fighting like lions, that case the cheetah will lose. The last thing the Constitution would do is go toe to toe exchanging broadsides like we see here. Ever play Pirates! and taken a galleon with a smaller, less manned, less gunned ship? Use the maneuverability, at least it will have a chance instead of trying to go toe-toe exchanging broadsides.
@Clydesdale2045 Unfortunately Pirates!, although a fun game, is nothing like real naval battles. The Constitution is more maneuverable than the Victory, true, however not enough so for it to avoid Victory's guns.
I hold that the Constitution would run or be captured.
Although I love taking a SOTL in Pirates! with a war canoe.
USS Constitution and her crews were top notch but this is a mismatch and any sensible captain in the US position would be a fool to try and go toe to toe with a much bigger and better armed vessel like the Victory. If forced to fight the Constitution's only chance would be to keep the enemy at arm's length and use her speed & state of the art 24 pound cannons (aka 'Long 9s'... 9 feet long) to damage the enemy's rigging or put some holes in her waterline.
@rappey USS Constitution was not actually in Master and Commander. She was the inspiration for Acheron, and Peter Weir, the director, did have a great deal of pictures of Constitution taken.
However, the Acheron of the film, alas, only exists there. She is but CG images and miniatures. HMS Surprise was actually HMS Rose, a reproduction from the 1970s. She is now owned by San Diego Maritime Museum.
@BradPanoff, "old Ironsides" was the nickname of the USS Constitution, not because it's sides were made from iron but because an American sailor shouted "Huzzah! It's sides are of iron!" when a cannonball bounced off the hull.
i love the constitution. for my 10th birthday my dad bought me a US flag and sent it to Boston. they flew the flag all day on my birthday and sent it back to me with a certificate and everything.
As a Heavy Frigate the Constitution was fast enough to run from the bigger ships and big enough to beat anything she couldn't run away from. The British considered the US Frigates to be "Super Frigates" in that they were typically better than a standard frigate. Although when your entire navy consists of just 5 frigates it is logical to put what money you have into that type of warship. Britain obviously put its money into the first rate ships.
I'm not sure what you mean in terms of weight of metal.
And British sailors were regarded throughout most of the world as the best at that time. Like I explained, "Old Ironsides" was a misplaced nickname. It is not surprising that 8lb cannonballs bounce off of the USS's sides when fired at an angle. The hull thickness on the USS was equivalent to that of the HMS, but the HMS was a colossal giant in comparison. And the USS's masts were as weak as those on any ship its sides. USS only had 450 crew
I can't believe I'm going to comment on below, but...Has anyone considered who would have the weather gauge, who the CO's were, and probably most important, how thoroughly the ships crew was drilled. Also, something to consider, most American sailors during this period were volunteers, whereas most British sailors were pressed conscripts (forced draftees). The Victory (whose nickname was also "Old Ironsides" btw) still had a huge advantage in weight of metal and crew, but that's not everything.
My conclusion is that although the HMS is (at long/long-medium range) equivalent to a large 4th rate/small 3rd rate, it would be unable to stand up to the HMS due to its far inferior size. The HMS's upper gun deck towers over the USS, making boarding very difficult, and giving both the musketeers and boarders on the HMS an advantage.
I think the USS was a very advanced and excellent ship for its time, but realistically... the HMS would win out in any situation.
Additionally, the USS is only equivalently armored in the hull section, not its masts. In fact, the USS was fairly damaged even after combating very inferior ships. So if the HMS hits its masts, it will not be long at all before they collapse, as we saw in the video (except it would likely be on the first or second broadside). The HMS has about 900 crew vs the USS's 450. The American sailors were not elite, but the USS was just particularly nimble. Also, the HMS could take more shots due to size
Let's assume that this battle does occur and the USS does not run away.
The HMS has a 50 gun broadside vs the USS's 25 (It was a 44 technically, but was often outfitted with extra guns.) The HMS would sail at around 8-10 knots and was very maneuverable for a ship of the line. Barring the fact that the USS would be destroyed while coming into range, it would still be unable to continuously evade the HMS. In terms of hull thickness, the USS and HMS are similar.
If the U.S.S. Constitution and the H.M.S. Victory everr did meet, the Constitution would never be able to stand up the victory. The Victory has over twice the Constitution's crew and guns. The American ship is built to run away from things that were bigger then it was
a never to be action.... 13knts vs 8/9 knts, specifically made to shatter Frigates and evade all Liners this one on one would not happen.....weight of broadside a killer disadvantage but the long range guns like 24lbs Longs and 32 Longs they were very similiar. 2 gun crews of Constitution served on Victory at Trafalga and remarked how elite the US crew was generally...
added to Macedonia Capt. report of USS America crew's being younger and faster too ....makes one wonder??
If the Victory and the Constitution truly did meet each other, the Constitution would likely run away, being the far faster vessel.
@tuggernuts, this is not like putting a P-51 against a Typhoon at all. The Typhoon would win because it is more advanced in every way, faster, better weapons, etc. The Constitution is far more advanced than the Victory in hull, cannon, and sail design, its just completely outgunned (over twice as many guns and crew on the Victory).
@Oricelis It's not about size, guns or sail design. It's about the crew and how they are trained for battle and by the outcome of the battles the H.M.S Victory was in. I wouldn't dismiss her just like that.
In this period, both crews were very good. I have heard that American crews were the best but I have no proof of this.
The different ships are of completely different classes and technologies. The Victory is older but far bigger. The Constitution is newer and faster but half the size.
I think that given the two navy's experiences and these two ships, the Constitution would have the choice to run away or get captured.
@Oricelis I respectfully disagree with your P-51 vs Typhoon analogy. The Typhoon was a terrible dogfighter and with pilot skill being equal would be eaten alive by the P-51, Spitfire IX or XIV, Fw-190A or D, La-5fn, La-7, Ki-84 or any mid-late war air superiority fighter. The Typhoon however did have excellent speed and packed a hefty punch (four 20mm cannons)... which is why the RAF used it almost exclusively for close air support and interdiction missions.
@spinocus He meant the Eurofighter Typhoon not the Hawker one. The Tempest was a better aircraft all round and was what the Typhoon should have been in the first place. The Tempest was more than capable of holding its own against the Fw-D9 and later Bf-109 variants. Funny how the comments can get off-topic so quickly XD
It was because someone else said that the Constitution vs Victory battle was like pitting a P-51 against a Eurofighter Typhoon. I found it to be a poor analogy, thus my comment.
@Oricelis Don't forget that Victory had been modernized more than once. While she was an older design than Constitution, all her guns had been replaced, her rigging changed and several other alterations had been made. While slower than Constitution, she was in fact very fast and manourable as first rates went.
@LarS1963 Fair enough, but still not fast enough to successfully chase the Constitution. The Constitution would outrun the Victory, but in the case the Victory caught the Constitution there would be little chance for the Americans.
If the Victory ever came up against the Constitution in the actual war, then I'd be willing to bet that America would be a British Colony to this day (well, possibly not quite, but we would've won the war). The problem was that She was away fighting in India at the time so it would have been very impractical to send her over
@AxisOfIguana It's improbable that one ship would have made such a big difference, but I guess it's possible. Anyway, the British, Canadians, and Australians are now practically American Colonies. :-) (kidding of course)
@AxisOfIguana You are completely correct, Yamato could turn either ship into splinters with one shot. It would be more difficult than shooting a proton torpedo down the exhaust port of the death star. That is why, in my own imagination, I think it would be utterly cool if it actually were to happen.
@workingstiff76 How did you bring the Yamato into this, that ship is several hundred years younger and today would be obliterated by most escord vessels before it would be in fire range.
The HMS Victory and USS Constitution come across the IJN Yamato, which has already been heavily damaged by a fight with the USS Iowa. Victory and Constitution fire a broadside, and an incendiary cannon shot hits the magazine that had been exposed by the battle with Iowa, and Yamato is blown apart. Admiral Nelson shakes hands with American captain, and the British and American crews proceed to celebrate together over beers. The end.
@workingstiff76 : That would work only if the armour protecting the magazines was riddled with holes prior to the fight and none of the japanese guns were working. A ww1 corvette could easily sink both the victory and constitution
hms victory is a good ship ill admitt that but the uss costution would have been to fast whitch would hagave it time while the victory is firering switch would hanve made it easy for the constution
@wank0r I have seen it up close :) fantastic piece of British naval history and something for the British to be very proud to still have with us. I am going to Portsmouth University to do Palaeontology, and HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and others (including the uber modern HMS Bulwark) Evolution in ships is fascinating. Indeed, HMS Victory was smallish compared to later warships there...but its legacy and name will surely outshine and outlive them all.
@wank0r Unfortunately its not a free to walk ship. I cant wait until it becomes a free ship but she has a captain who solely uses her as a place to hold parties.
lol "yanks cant fight" last time i checked in the real world we sent ur asses home, not hating on our neighbors across the atlantic but be a little more amicable, huh? also old ironsides is still alive and kicking.
There are many things to a "Wooden ships & Iron men" sea battle.
Sea and weather conditions being tantamount, In heavy seas, for instance HMS Victory would be unable to unmask all her guns due to the swells.
Also, USS Constitution with a little luck, could prolong the battle via maneuver.
The quality, training and condition of the men (unlike a program, Sailors are not 'bots') at the time would heavily influence the outcome as well. ..That being said, the Naval Battles are excellent in ETW.
I think this represents a nice irony. The fact the Constitution historically went up against much weaker vessels (yet its 'achievements' are blown out of all proportion), so to be put up against the Victory is fitting. It would have have received one broadside and blown up/sunk/surrendered.
@Talbot6832 The beauty of the ship was she was a new class of hull design and could outrun anything she could not outfight. A one on one With HMS Victory would be insanity. The USS Constitution would simply outrun her with ease. A heavy cruiser would NEVER take on a SOL. It would be suicidal unless they managed to get very lucky.
@Xtreambob1 yeah but it has no ability to protect itself against a 900-men 1st rate ship of the line, and plus the victory could take down the constitutions masts
@Xtreambob1 "Ironsides" was a a hearty ship because it was made of White Oak. This made it extreamly durable, and the design made the slightly malleable wood almost reflective. That said, a Frigate simply cannot beat a Ship-of-the-Line of it's class or higher. It just can't work. As an American, I adore this ship, and I think it would have had a chance using Frigate Hit-n-Run tactics, but in a standard Naval battle, maybe 3 broadsides could be endured AT MOST before she would sink.
@MrGreenfive She was built to outclass other frigates, not to take on a ship of the line, She was made to be fast enough to run should one show up. They wouldnt have tried to fight it out. And why dont you say that to a WW2 US Vet.
Let me put it in simple terms that everyone will understand. USS Constitution= Black Pearl HMS Victory= Interceptor. You are going DOWN HMS Victory!!!!
"Old Ironsides" is a nickname given to the USS Constitution because British cannonballs seemed to bounce off her wooden sides ( quite a few, in fact, embedded themselves in the ship). The first iron warships didn't appear until the 1850s. American frigates of that time were like the pocket battleships of their day : on average they had more guns than a Brit frigate. But in no way could they be considered equal to a liner.
@justisreigns lol, they did not have iron sides you retard. I was so called due to the strnethg of the wood. The only ship with any metal on her was the Victory, it had a copper plated hull to increase mobility and prevent weeds and shit growing on it. Also the victory had twice the mount of guns roughly and in those days whoever had more guns won. Also the victory had many more sailors/ marines on board so if one boarded the other then the victory would always win.
@justisreigns I don't know if you've resolved this yet but H.M.S Warrior was the first warship made completely of iron, it was also the largest warship in the world when it was built in 1850.
@justisreigns As someone else pointed out, "Old Ironsides" is a nickname given to the USS Constitution because of her solidity. Not because she was ironplated. There were no Ironclads before 1858 or there abouts.
Solid or not, she is still a fifth-rate. A fast, wellmade, powerful fifth-rate, but a fifth-rate all the same. HMS Victory is a first-rate! What would happen if you too WW2's finest, fastest, most powerful light cruiser and pitted her against USS Iowa? The cruiser would go down!
FYI, for all you who never read Patrick O'Brian, the Victory was a ship of the line, the Constitution was a frigate. Frigates NEVER engaged a ship of the line individually.
@samdogdamndog2 "Frigates NEVER engaged a ship of the line individually." Not true. Besides that, everything else you said was just the obvious; Victory was a first rate, and Constitution was a frigate. Had you read the video information, you'd have understood.
Huh, this is what I'm tired of. The Americans trying to rebel against Great Britain in whatever they can because they know the are free and Britain not letting go of that fact. And by the way the Vietnam war was pointless and ended in a dead tie.
@kalfornoc Im an American. Born an American Raised an American. My family has been here since colonization. I personally hate America and im moving to United Kingdom to become a citizen. Many Americans are ignorant... but people like me and my brothers and parents realize the stupidity of America.
@TheeBatmanX i agree with you in leaving, "if you don't like america, you can get out!!" BUT i disagree with you on most americans being ignorant or unsophisticated, people from america had invented many great things, eg. Mac Products, Facebook, Cures for diseases and etc. You may argue that those people are not americans because of their family backgrounds, but god damn it they're born in america and that makes them AMERICAN!
@TheeBatmanX Hahaha, you crack me up!! XD Ignorant, stupid... ha! If that's the only reason why you're moving to the UK, that's, that's... pretty depressing and immature.
@kalfornoc Huh, is that so, is that what we're doing? I must have missed that, when did all of this happen? Because last time I knew, we were fighting over in Iraq, Afghanistan, for OUR freedom, our war is with them and them only, not Great Britain. These two countries are great allies, we rely on each other, in many different aspects. I don't know where the heck you're getting all of this false information.
I think it's funny that everyone always fights about "Britain is better then America or anything else on that subject" we have problems, you have problems. The fact is, we are truly the greatest friends in the world's history, no matter if you like it or not. Accept that or just stop talking
USMarineRifleman0311 don't even think about brining up WW2 the British navy controlled the biggest Empire around the 18th century and the US joined in at WW2 not WW1 and you were not the people who stopped Hitler! Russia attacked Berlin and there Hitler killed himself
All of you saying Britain or america won the war you guys are wrong The USSR won it by a huge margine The Entire German Army was devoted towards the eastern front hitler could have ripped apart Birtain and America apart within a month with the quantety of troups he sent to the eastern front there was nothing in france people exagerate the people who made the difference were the Russians im German my grandfather was part of the white rose (they smuggled jew out of germany) so believe me i know
The USS constitution would have been completely outclassed by the HMS Victory. It's all in the design. The constitution was built to be powerful enough to outclass other frigates, but when a ship of the line showed itself it was supposed to be fast enough to run away rather than risk being destroyed.
@viceadmiralcongo I'm not a naval expert, but aren't the two ships two different classes anyways? I mean, wouldn't this be like a WWII battleship going up against a cruiser? The two really aren't comparable.
@hunterkiller232134 Precisely my point. A ship of the line is an entirely different ship class from a frigate, even a heavy one. On land, it would be comparing an armored car to a heavy tank: different weight, different firepower, different purpose.
I'm a proud American, but the Constitution probably couldn't survive even two broadsides from HMS Victory. When 52 cannonballs hit a small ship all at once, it tends to do a lot of damage.
Lastima que los ingleses de The Creative Assembly se olvidara de añadir a la expansión el "Santísima Trinidad" que podría derrotar fácilmente al "HMS Victory" aunque todo depende del capitán que los maneje..
Whoever was the captain of the Victory was as incompetent as a ballerina in charge of a naval battle!!! Why keep turning the ship needlessly around and expose yourself to raking fire? In a straight duel Victory's broadside easily outweighs constitutions, so no matter how much Constitution chain-shots Victory's riggings, she'll never bring them down before Victory annihilates her using solid-shot broadsides!
@Nelsonwmj Because the person who recorded this wanted the USS Constitution to win, the fact of the matter is is that they are two differant types of ship, if they were along side the Victory's broadside would rip it apart in 1 go but the USS Constitution's got al the speed.. :)
the Constitution would never go to toe to toe with a warship like the Victory for obvious reason. The Victory is too large and has too much firepower. The Constitution would OUTRUN the Victory and go find some British frigates or merchantmen.
Both sides BRITAIN&AMERICA have lost wars battles in any case we fight to gether in WW2 and the war in afaganistane and EXT we are both a great military force
@KateMonster369 It's just a petty rivalry on Youtube. When worst comes to worst for one of our nations, I'm sure the other will be there to back them up, just like in the War on Terror....the UK didn't have to do this with us but they did and I am personally grateful, especially on the 10th anniversary of the attacks.
sorry to the Constitution is not the olds commissioned war ship in the world HMS Victory is she is still a Commissioned flag ship and she only picked fights with ships that she knew she clearly out clased i wonder how she would have faired aginst a Brittish ship of her same class
Dude. It's war. If you're fighting an even match, it means you've screwed up. The British knew what they were doing when they built the HMS St Lawrence on Lake Ontario. :p
As for USS constitution vs HMS Victory. Their is only 4 things the Constitution's captian could do 1. Fight and try to pull a "Captain John Paul Jones" on the HMS Victory. 2. Crap his pants. (hey when you see a ship with over twice your guns and crew that may or may not be your reaction). 3. Get the heck out of their ,may come before or after option number 2. 4.Surrender his ship ,also may come after option 2, though this one is very unlikely to occur. Options depends where the battle is at
The British Navy would complety destroy the American navy in less than a week ,if the British had engaged the U.S. Navy. Today though is a different story ,America's navy is bigger & more technologically advanced than the British Navy ;however, considering who we are talking about ,if the U.S. navy and the British Navy went to war ; I am confident the U.S. navy would come out on top ;however, I am also confident that we would lose so many ships it would be a long ,long time before we recovered.
@USMarineRifleman0311 It all depends on curcumstance my friend. If it happens off the coast of America ,of the coast of Britain ,or just in the open sea. The thing about 1:1 is that don't tell you crap about how good someone will do in a group. If your ships are stronger individually thats good ,but if the other ships can out manuever or out smart you all that power will do you little good. It all comes down to training ,and designs also today the air force and submarines would play a role 2.
Another defficiency of the modern RN is that its become some centralized, USN and USMC in contrast have all evolved into so many sub branches. I mean for gods sake, the world's 2nd largest airforce is under USN's command. Needless to mention that even our Marine force has an airwing.
The RN today reminds me of what the German navy once was, not too cooperative or coordinated with other branches. We're better and sustaining cross-ocean wars than any other force in history
@USMarineRifleman0311 Nationalism won't get you anywhere. Britain at its height owned a quarter of the globe, The United States at the moment owns... the United States, that's it. Saying you're navy is better at cross ocean wars than any other in history is simply arrogant. Don't be blinded by patriotism, it just makes you look like a dick.
We're in 135 countries right now and maintining a presence in a world that doesnt approve of imperialism. We have bases in literally every country we were fought. England never stuck around after defeating Napoleon.
Holding all of that ground is exactly what is straining us. We've helped dozens of armies to stand up militarily, for our 2nd hand gain. Your world is gone and youre still clinging to a fuckin monarchy
@USMarineRifleman0311 It seems you are still stuck in the "manifest destiny" frame of mind. You think you are healing the world by invading countries with different ideas to you, but you know who also thought that? Hitler. I don't know what your monarchy argument has to do with anything, they generate huge amounts of profit in tourism for our country and play a part in our international relations. And we never stuck around after Napoleon? We kept the empire up until 1997.
the empire fell in 1945. WW2 drained the B.E. completly. What you can all empire is just a matter of definition now.
Rome built outposts and had satelite countries, but that obviously proved costly. The modern day wars arent for territory, theyre for resources and as long as WE can divert oil and other precious commodities from the east we'll be better off. If US declines economically, we'

Cannons never really sunk a ship, just disabled it long enough for the attacker. to get along side and fight hand to hand.
since the Victory had nearly twice as many crew who would win?
the british ships were also famed for the ability to fire nearly twice as many shots in a given time as the french or spanish.
Tacktics also played a huge part in battles and again, Nelson was superb at this.

DrOctogonapus321 2 months ago
@BradPanoff, "old Ironsides" was the nickname of the USS Constitution, not because it's sides were made from iron but because an American sailor shouted "Huzzah! It's sides are of iron!" when a cannonball bounced off the hull.

i love the constitution. for my 10th birthday my dad bought me a US flag and sent it to Boston. they flew the flag all day on my birthday and sent it back to me with a certificate and everything.
oilerman313131 2 months ago
As a Heavy Frigate the Constitution was fast enough to run from the bigger ships and big enough to beat anything she couldn't run away from. The British considered the US Frigates to be "Super Frigates" in that they were typically better than a standard frigate. Although when your entire navy consists of just 5 frigates it is logical to put what money you have into that type of warship. Britain obviously put its money into the first rate ships.
77thewaz 2 months ago
I'm not sure what you mean in terms of weight of metal.
And British sailors were regarded throughout most of the world as the best at that time. Like I explained, "Old Ironsides" was a misplaced nickname. It is not surprising that 8lb cannonballs bounce off of the USS's sides when fired at an angle. The hull thickness on the USS was equivalent to that of the HMS, but the HMS was a colossal giant in comparison. And the USS's masts were as weak as those on any ship its sides. USS only had 450 crew
TheXyrex 2 months ago

TheXyrex 2 months ago
Additionally, the USS is only equivalently armored in the hull section, not its masts. In fact, the USS was fairly damaged even after combating very inferior ships. So if the HMS hits its masts, it will not be long at all before they collapse, as we saw in the video (except it would likely be on the first or second broadside). The HMS has about 900 crew vs the USS's 450. The American sailors were not elite, but the USS was just particularly nimble. Also, the HMS could take more shots due to size
TheXyrex 2 months ago
(Having done some more research)

The American ship is built to run away from things that were bigger then it was
Legolordwellington 2 months ago
a never to be action....

Oricelis 2 months ago 24
@Oricelis It's not about size, guns or sail design. It's about the crew and how they are trained for battle and by the outcome of the battles the H.M.S Victory was in. I wouldn't dismiss her just like that.
ImperialKnightmareth 2 months ago
@ImperialKnightmareth It's about both.
Oricelis 1 month ago
@Oricelis I respectfully disagree with your P-51 vs Typhoon analogy. The Typhoon was a terrible dogfighter and with pilot skill being equal would be eaten alive by the P-51, Spitfire IX or XIV, Fw-190A or D, La-5fn, La-7, Ki-84 or any mid-late war air superiority fighter. The Typhoon however did have excellent speed and packed a hefty punch (four 20mm cannons)... which is why the RAF used it almost exclusively for close air support and interdiction missions.
spinocus 1 month ago
@spinocus He meant the Eurofighter Typhoon not the Hawker one. The Tempest was a better aircraft all round and was what the Typhoon should have been in the first place. The Tempest was more than capable of holding its own against the Fw-D9 and later Bf-109 variants. Funny how the comments can get off-topic so quickly XD
aspiringdrummer17 1 month ago
@spinocus I meat Eurofighter Typhoon, not Hawker Typhoon.
Oricelis 1 month ago

It was because someone else said that the Constitution vs Victory battle was like pitting a P-51 against a Eurofighter Typhoon. I found it to be a poor analogy, thus my comment.
Oricelis 1 month ago
@Oricelis Don't forget that Victory had been modernized more than once. While she was an older design than Constitution, all her guns had been replaced, her rigging changed and several other alterations had been made. While slower than Constitution, she was in fact very fast and manourable as first rates went.
LarS1963 1 month ago
@LarS1963 Fair enough, but still not fast enough to successfully chase the Constitution. The Constitution would outrun the Victory, but in the case the Victory caught the Constitution there would be little chance for the Americans.

If the Victory ever came up against the Constitution in the actual war, then I'd be willing to bet that America would be a British Colony to this day (well, possibly not quite, but we would've won the war). The problem was that She was away fighting in India at the time so it would have been very impractical to send her over
AxisOfIguana 3 months ago
@AxisOfIguana It's improbable that one ship would have made such a big difference, but I guess it's possible. Anyway, the British, Canadians, and Australians are now practically American Colonies. :-) (kidding of course)
workingstiff76 3 months ago
@AxisOfIguana You are completely correct, Yamato could turn either ship into splinters with one shot. It would be more difficult than shooting a proton torpedo down the exhaust port of the death star. That is why, in my own imagination, I think it would be utterly cool if it actually were to happen.
workingstiff76 3 months ago

The end.
workingstiff76 4 months ago

Talbot6832 4 months ago
@Talbot6832 The beauty of the ship was she was a new class of hull design and could outrun anything she could not outfight. A one on one With HMS Victory would be insanity. The USS Constitution would simply outrun her with ease. A heavy cruiser would NEVER take on a SOL. It would be suicidal unless they managed to get very lucky.

@Xtreambob1 yeah but it has no ability to protect itself against a 900-men 1st rate ship of the line, and plus the victory could take down the constitutions masts
Legolordwellington 4 months ago
@Xtreambob1 "Ironsides" was a a hearty ship because it was made of White Oak. This made it extreamly durable, and the design made the slightly malleable wood almost reflective. That said, a Frigate simply cannot beat a Ship-of-the-Line of it's class or higher. It just can't work. As an American, I adore this ship, and I think it would have had a chance using Frigate Hit-n-Run tactics, but in a standard Naval battle, maybe 3 broadsides could be endured AT MOST before she would sink.

But in no way could they be considered equal to a liner.

justisreigns 4 months ago
@justisreigns lol, they did not have iron sides you retard. I was so called due to the strnethg of the wood. The only ship with any metal on her was the Victory, it had a copper plated hull to increase mobility and prevent weeds and shit growing on it. Also the victory had twice the mount of guns roughly and in those days whoever had more guns won. Also the victory had many more sailors/ marines on board so if one boarded the other then the victory would always win.

mrmemanme 4 months ago

@justisreigns you have no idea what your talking about
Legolordwellington 4 months ago
@justisreigns As someone else pointed out, "Old Ironsides" is a nickname given to the USS Constitution because of her solidity. Not because she was ironplated. There were no Ironclads before 1858 or there abouts.
Solid or not, she is still a fifth-rate. A fast, wellmade, powerful fifth-rate, but a fifth-rate all the same. HMS Victory is a first-rate! What would happen if you too WW2's finest, fastest, most powerful light cruiser and pitted her against USS Iowa? The cruiser would go down!

@viceadmiralcongo I'm not a naval expert, but aren't the two ships two different classes anyways? I mean, wouldn't this be like a WWII battleship going up against a cruiser? The two really aren't comparable.
hunterkiller232134 5 months ago
@hunterkiller232134 Precisely my point. A ship of the line is an entirely different ship class from a frigate, even a heavy one. On land, it would be comparing an armored car to a heavy tank: different weight, different firepower, different purpose.

Options depends where the battle is at

@USMarineRifleman0311 It all depends on curcumstance my friend. If it happens off the coast of America ,of the coast of Britain ,or just in the open sea. The thing about 1:1 is that don't tell you crap about how good someone will do in a group. If your ships are stronger individually thats good ,but if the other ships can out manuever or out smart you all that power will do you little good. It all comes down to training ,and designs also today the air force and submarines would play a role 2.
RenegadeElite101 6 months ago

Another defficiency of the modern RN is that its become some centralized, USN and USMC in contrast have all evolved into so many sub branches. I mean for gods sake, the world's 2nd largest airforce is under USN's command. Needless to mention that even our Marine force has an airwing.
The RN today reminds me of what the German navy once was, not too cooperative or coordinated with other branches. We're better and sustaining cross-ocean wars than any other force in history

the empire fell in 1945.
