beautiful hen! Just wondering because i have a polish hen of my own.. i noticed the black streaks on its crest any idea what that is?? My white polish has the same problem..i tried washing it out but failed -.-. Is it just sunburnt feathers?
Aww, she so cute! And you have her in the house! I wish I could have my Non bearded white creasted black polish rooster in the house. But my dad said no to that idea lol
Silkies and just about any of those rare chickens are fragile. They need to eat grass and when it's raining you gotta keep them away from the rain because they catch cold easily. So long as they are warm and dry and you let them eat fresh grass everyday, they'll be fine.
SOOO cute! I'm getting 3 polish chickens in the summer. One silver laced, one buff laced, and one golden laced. All hens :D I'm excited.....! Chickens RULE!
She's very beautiful and I have bought 25 Crested Polish from Double R Supply and when they had arrived one was already dead then a few days later I had lost 2 more chicks since they became weak and had died. For the rest of my flock they're growing and seem quite healthy
I lost one of my Polish chicks the second day. I ordered 5 from my local feed store (they came from Cackle Hatchery.) But all the rest are still with me a year later and doing well. This breed is a bit fragile until they get established. Good luck and enjoy your poof heads! I love mine!
Don't worry. Once they get a good start as babies you should not have problems beyond what you might normally have. Just keep them warm (but not too warm - start about 95 F and each week lower the temp by 5 degrees) and make sure they have plenty of food and clean water. I mean they are fragile in that many people I know, including me, have had at least 1 of the chicks die in the first week. I think shipping them as babies is hard on them - more so than other breeds. But have a great time!
And keep them out of a draft. I think they are more prone to drafts than other breeds. Out of the over 50 babies I have reared the only one I lost in the first week was a Polish. I lost a different breed at 4 weeks to an impacted crop, and I lost my Egyptian Fayoumi hen (boohoo - loved her) to roosters injuring her during mating. Before I realized what was happening it was too late to help her. And I just lost a pheasant hen to an injury to her neck - got it caught while I was gone...
They are not as small as my bantam Silkies, but not as large as the regular Wyandottes. They are a delicate looking bird, but they seem to be pretty hardy. They survived a pretty cold winter here in Indiana (albeit in the coop with a brooder lamp when it got below 5...)
Hi! I love your polish hens :)) We have had quite a few of our other chickens pecking at our polish hens' crests. have you experienced this at all and if so, how did you handle it? Minnie's crest looks nice and full:))
Thanks - she is a beautiful girl! We haven't integrated the Polish ans Silkies with the others yet. I was afraid that might happen, plus they are about 2-3 months younger and that will cause problems. They are still living in the coop I built in the bedroom, but they will be moving out to the barn soon. I think I will create a separate run and indoor space for them, at least in the beginning...
I remember when I saw these types of chickens at the fair I literally peed my pants laughing at their afros

I would think that's a form of handicap, seems kind of cruel to grow a chicken like that.
