i live in Th U.S. And i have a heart condition. my doctors won't allow me to drive or pedal a bike. my only option was a throttle control ebike. mine is an ultramotors A2B with a 500 watt hub motor. with the auxiliary battery, 30 miles without pedaling is no problem. as battery technology improves, i hope and expect range and battery charging cycles to increase.
I have a 200W urban mover pedal driven e-bike and it works just fine for steep hills around Adelaide where I live, even my 11 year old son can climb 10 degree+ inclines comfortably (though you need to pedal). An average fit person can produce 300W. Those here advocating major increases in power are clearly not seeking a bicycle but a scooter, which is a different deal altogether. Pedelecs up to 250W are the way to go for power bicycles as recognised by the NSW Roads Dept.
100W is used in kids ride on cars. 200W for a heavy bike, adult rider, batteries and motor is a joke considering the high price. Get with it RTA and follow rest of the World where they have usable power.

Currently in NSW is 200W. They talking about raising that to 250W or even baning motorized bikes all together. If they raise the power, I'd say 400W is really needed to make it worth while.
To make ebikes a more viable commute, they need to up the limits in line with USA to 750W / 32Km/h under motor. I can get to work from Hoppers Crossing to CBD, 30Km, on a 12Ah 36V LiFePO4 battery, in under 90 minutes. The motor is rated 200W at 24V. Overvolted Currie iZip

I am a proponent of maximising visibility and where possible, minimizing traffic exposure.

I've never learnt to drive and have come to hate public transport, so the e-bikes have given me tremendous freedom. I even take them on trains occasionally when travelling long distances. The truth and honesty about Electric Bikes, is almost as "unceptable", or "they can't see it", to some people as the Holy Spirit or Christ resurected. I hope you are still passionate, CyclePat. There is an attitudinal problem. Cars give people power and exclusivity. You can shut yourself off. On the bike you have to be more friendly and open. We need to re discover how nice that is.
Hi Wid. The important thing to do, if you don't make on yourself, is to get a really good one. E bikes have had a bit of a bad name because people buy them off E bay at low cost and they break down real fast.
This is not helped by there being few recognizable brand names one can trust. Giant seems to be good and Kahlkoff, but they are really costly.
Mine comes from a Melb. company, EVs, and they seem to have done their homework. It's solid and pretty much trouble free so far.

those bikes are for weirdoes
there are plenty of convertion kits for normal bikes
and there cheaper than 2 grand mate
i got my bike a 500 watt 36v front wheel kit and it will handle even the realt tough hills and it was only $500
who cares that the power limit is 200 watt cops only look out for those crappy petrol motors
besides i dont expect to run into any that have a multi metre handy on them anytime soon

I agree the motors have to be more powerful. But the best we can hope for is that they'll up the legal limit to 250 watts in line with Europe.
The RTA in NSW is about to recommend that as you surely know. Cheers
