  • She said Remington in a mumble at 4 seconds left, then said Steel (Steele) before the buzzer. Another valid answer.

  • My argument goes as follows... "Remington Steele" is a proper name and, since it was not specified that both first and last names were required (obvious, given that Cagney & Lacey was a previous answer), saying "Steel", even in the context it was used, should count. Were I the judge, that's the call I would've made myself.

  • I think because character names have such variation that they accepted it. While this was for the opportunity to win a lot of money, the rules are more laxed than in the winner's circle.

  • Bullshit, she says "Steel" in reference to the razor clue given by her partner. Secondly the dumbass says Bronson Pinchot instead of Pierce Brosnan so the clue giver didnt have a clue (lol) what she was saying. No Win!, Guys are like wtf... bitches win again

  • @cxxxviii But "Pyramid" is a game of phonetics, meaning that even if she said "steel" as in the blade, she still said it. Therefore it counts. I do question the validity of the call based on tvpirate05's argument that Remington Steele is a character and not an actual person. You couldn't get away with just "Pan" for "Peter Pan".

  • Word of caution: some knuckleheads will get on here & disagree to start crap.Pay no attention to them!

  • I think with this category, it should have been the full name to count (Steel not count), and thus it should have been a tie-breaker.

  • BTW, good point made by bretodom on Punky Brewster. "pan" wouldn't be acceptable for "Peter Pan".

  • I don't think it should have been a win for 2reasons: 1) She made the mark of a Z- which is similar to saying "starts with a Z", and "Steel" shouldn't count because it was a character name not a person. They should have brought the other contestant back again (I don't know, maybe they did). =]

  • I think it's a win. Dick Clark , when reading the instructions, did not say that both names were needed as are sometimes done in rounds where names are used. Therefore, I think it's a win.

  • I don't think so.

  • I know that you're concern on this particular subject/issue. In this case, this is during the Tournament where players roatate each other until someone wins $100,000 in the winner's circle. In YodaS... comment it could go either way.

  • That's a freaking tough one because your initial knee jerk reaction of "well it's ok" gets thrown off due to the opposing team factor. I agree with tvpirate, let it go but bring the other player back to make it fair since that could have gone either way.

  • Yes, in this particular case, the judges were being generous. She clearly meant "steel" not "Steele". If she had said "Steel... Oh, Remington Steele!" then it would've been fine, IMO. But not this!

  • I wouldn't have counted it..."Remington Steele" is a title, not an actual person. If it were "Pierce Brosnan", and she said "Brosnan", then yes.

Tough call, but I say bring the opponent back.

  • Its a win

  • Here's my view. If this had happened in the Winner's Circle, I would have given it to them without thinking. In this case, there was another team competing, and they probably felt gypped that the girls won on an incomplete answer.

The whole name was in quotes, so she shouldn't have gotten it unless she said the whole name.

  • I wouldn't of given it to them based on the fact that it's supposed to be characters.

The loser of that game had to be sitting there dumbfounded. Lost on a technicality like that. Buzz her incorrect on that, and make the two battle it out in a tiebreaker.

[and I would of buzzed the clue for Zorro because it wasn't a vocal clue.. but then again, they can use hands in the main game]

  • The general rule is that "titles must be exact." Since we're dealing with titles here, I'm afraid the judge had an itchy bell finger.

  • It's a win, but bring the loser back on a future espiode.

  • no win

  • I don't think that was a win.

If the answer was "Punky Brewster"

    would Brewster be acceptable?

    Doubt it.

  • Ok, it's PIERCE BROSNAN, not Bronson Pinchot. Dummy. I can see how she can mix up the two.

  • I have on a few occasions heard Dick say that you must give the entire name. So if he does not specify, then the last name must be acceptable. On "Jeopardy," in most cases the last name if good enough, unless the contestant is told otherwise.

  • Yep, on certain catagories, Dick will specify if you must give the entire name (full name, first and last, etc) to receive credit for it.

  • @pressmin Dick wasn't going to accept it, the judges did

  • No way. If Remington Steele had been an actual person, I think the last name would have been acceptable. However, because it is a character, I would have wanted the full name. Marilyn got lucky on that one, and I think Dick Clark was in agreement with me on this one.

And yes: Marilyn Evans' and Ilene Graf's shoulder pads are nothing short of flawless.

  • I have to agree there. I think in this case, the Pyramid show got screwed by its own rules. The rules state that when dealing with people or characters, unless specified otherwise, last name is OK. Since they were dealing with characters, I think Ilene should have to had given the entire name. The fact that the last name only rule was in effect gave it to Marilyn on a technicality.

  • Flawless is right! Long live the '80s!! :)

  • I'm undecided about this one. The entire name was in quotes, but the character's nickname was "Steele"...

  • I believe this was the first week of the longest tournament ever.

  • That is Ilene Graff (from "Mr. Belvedere") receiving the clues, right?

  • Yep! That's her.

  • Thanks. Just wanted to make sure on that.

Also, it's kinda ironic that the last clue in this clip is "Remington Steele" What's ironic about it is that prior to co-staring on "Mr. Belvedere", she guest-starred in a season 1 episode of the show. And at the time she had a much shorter (and lighter) hairstyle, compared to what she had on this show as well as in the later episodes of "Mr. B".

Also, are those shoulder pads she's wearing? They sure look like they are! LOL

  • Yep, both Ilene and Marilyn are sportin' the shoulder pads. Plus check out the big, 1987 hair. I bet if either Ilene or Marilyn saw this clip, they would say "Good Lord, what was I thinking?"
