No, Its not Cissy Houston singing back-up. I used Telma Hopkins, Joyce Vincent (who would later become Dawn for Tony Orlando) and a third singer named Bunny.
I owned that record in it's original US release... then came along separation from my missus, and she didn't hand over my personal belongings .... great LP, and I really miss having it.
Stoney: The one and only Shaun Murphy...still kickin' in 2011...just released her second solo album, "The Trouble with Lovin", (genre: blues, soul)...Shaun is a living legend and one of the greatest female singers to come out of Detroit in the last forty years. Search for her and find her band's website...can not post it here..thx!!!!

The funny part is that it was played on a black radio station(KGFJ) in L.A. for about two good weeks-then another Detroit group( The Dramatics) came out with Whatcha See Is Whatcha get-and blew Stoney and Meatloaf out of the water. Though the titles sound the same, the more urban sound won out. I bought the LP back then, and still play it now and then- I love Jimmy Bell also on the LP.
Don Davis, the producer of the Dramatics would call me from time to time. One night when he was about to sign off, he said to me, "The next tiime you release a record, give me the title". I have laughed about that for years.
This is a pretty good song. Too bad you don't have a USB turntable so that you could rip an mp3 off the single and upload it here for better sound quality.
How come this song wasn't a big hit in 1971? It's great. Songs that year that were hits were often not as good as this one. I like this song, it's a hit with me. There was a hit song by some other group that was called what you see is what you get, but I don't know if it's the same song, or which one came out first.
The other song you mention with the same title was done by the Dramatics produced by Don Davis. His song knocked ours off the charts. Don would call me one evening to chat, as he often did. As he was about to sign off he said.."Oh by the way...The next time you release a record, call me and give me the title". I've laughed about that for years.
i bought the vinyl lp of "stoney and meatloaf" second hand in leeds outdoor market in about 1980 and i still have it, the cover shows a photo of them both in old fashioned clothes with meatloaf in a stovepipe hat, i thought the whole lp was great.
What You See was derived from a track Mike Valvano had previously recorded. A&R head, Betty Ocha tried to hijack it from us to do on the Supremes. I blew my stack, went to Harry Balk, who was head of the Creative Division and he put a stop to it.
The woman singing (Stoney) is Shaun Murphy of Little Feat. She has been a backup singer for Eric Clapton & Bob Seger to name a few and in my opinion is one of the best female singers of our time!
She (Stoney Shawn Murphy) also had a couple songs on MoWest label, but the 45 was moved over to the Motown label M-1246. This was when the MoWest was slowly crumbling, and many issues were not released.
other groups include: The Lorelies The Wild Angels Feminine Touch Wilson Mower Pursuit Bob Segar's Band
Wow! My sister bought this record by accident when I was a kid. She was looking for the song by the Dramatics. She was not fond of this as I remember. It is not a bad song, just not what her ears were waiting to hear.
OMG!
My very first single that I bought....

Does this have Lady Be Mine on the B side? I've heard it's different to the LP version, but I can't find a copy anywhere!

Stoney is so cute in that album cover picture with Meat Loaf. I hear she's still singing. I wish I heard of this band in 1971, but I never did.

I've noticed that every Meat Loaf video it's been rated high, even the not so good ones, although I´m a fan
By the way I'm rating five stars

Omigod, I remember listening to this track when it was new. This song, along with the Dramatic's came out at the same time around 1972, I believe
