@djk28161 Hate to burst your bubble, but, many historians say that he was robbed both times by the judges, because no one liked him at the time. A shame too, because I did like him as a boxer, and he is one of the all time greats!
i laughed my head off in this match.About in the 6th round Holmes looks into the camera and talking to the mercer corner and fights then back. Real show!!)
This fight shows the fighting intelligence and maturity of Holmes. Guile indeed. He simply fooled and outsmarted Mercer. Proves that old age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill.
to me larry holmes was a great technician like bernard hopkins, a master boxer who even when old his skill and guile could enable him to take on much younger stronger men, what a legendary fighter
WOW Larry Holmes is the man! 42 years old here standing in the corner and telling Ray mercer to bring it! way to man up Larry, don't make em like they use to
@primeboxers Tyson was the only guy to knock out holmes, that came 4 years before holyfield won a close decision.Yeah that is awesome...shit for brains.
if only mercer fought moorer instead, that would also have been a great one..i respect mercer though he just didnt fight enough fights....his performances against Holyfield and Lennox were magnificent he could have won both of them
I rate Holmes at number three behind Ali and Louis in terms of greatness, but I put him at two in terms of who beats who. I think Holmes beats Louis head to head, but loses to Ali. There aren't many fighters that I see that could beat Larry. Great tactician, very good power and the heart and chin of a warrior. It's a shame he was hated most of his career. And even though I agree with him 100%, "Marciano couldn't carry my jockstrap," is not going to win ANY fans over.
@thelordmemnoch i think larry would have beaten even ali, ali was a great athlete but an above average boxer who had trouble with guys with fast hands. larry was a great boxer with fast hands and a punch and clever also. larry would have beaten him on points if the met at there peaks
@OLYMPIANSUPERMAN i dont agree. Ali in his prime was too fast and too smart. He was freakishly fast and super fit. Holmes was very young ad ali very old and past his prime when they met
@doctorwho1982 Holmes was very young when he fought Ali??? WRONG Holmes was 31 when he fought Ali who was 38. I wouldnt call 31 very young in boxing circles
@CONTENDER791 thats still young. Ali was 32 when he beat george foreman to be heavyweight champ for a 2nd time. Plus alis alzheimers was already starting to show before the larry holmes fight.
@OLYMPIANSUPERMAN Oh please man,Muhammed Ali was Larry Holmes teacher for goodness sake, everything Holmes did was based on what Ali did, without Ali there would literally be no Holmes, how the hell would Larry whup him?shit, even with parkinsons Holmes still coulnt drop him,he definitely would not outpoint him thats for damn sure
Great jaw, great jab and a very skilled boxer. Tyson was a bad ass, Holyfield was cagey, but sometimes I think the heavyweight division hasn't been really relevant since Holmes retired.
No heavyweight was ever better than Ali,believe me Oscar NONE.Remember that Ali was Larry's teacher up at dear Lake when Larry was his sparing Partner.Larry learned to float and jab literally directly from Ali.Ali could take Earnie Shavers best punch and still stand up,Larry couldn't!!!recovery??i am the greatest....was a true statement...
@onlyjoetee Ali also said Frazier had no footwork, rhythm or class before their first fight, which if I need remind you Ali lost + Ali was the one wanting to quit at the end of the 14th round of the 2nd fight with Frazier, and Louis was more capable then Frazier in my eyes he could of taken Ali.
@onlyjoetee What do you mean Larry couldn't take Shavers best punch and still stand up ?, Shavers dropped Holmes with an amazing right straight and Holmes did get up and won the fight. "Holmes could do eveything Ali could do and more" - George Foreman
My point is,Larry went down from Shavers best,Ali didn't. If Larry Holmes could do everything Ali could and MORE,he would be the greatest fighter in the history of the universe, which he clearly is not.Ali was Larry Holmes teacher literally,Larry was Ali's sparring partner for years,Ali literally schooled him in the art of boxing.Ali was his master!!!

Not true. If Mercer had won as an undefeated Olympic Champion, a Holyfield vs Mercer fight would have been a bigger fight. The week before the Holyfield - Holmes fight Bob Arum complained that it didn't matter how good Holmes was, people didn't like him enough to buy tickets to watch him fight.

@pressrolls butterbean would knock yr ass out. Hes a fringe fighter but still dangerous. At 52 yrs age, noone could be expected to beat him, unless yr a legend like larry holmes.
MAYBE!, but the way TYSON beat HOLMES so easily leads me to beleive that he wouldve still handled any LARRY HOLMES that showed up.
usually when a great champion is not at his best, he still manages to put up a good fight anyway. FOREMAN with HOLYFEILD. ALI stopped late by HOLMES. LEONARD with TERRY NORRIS. CHAVEZ with DELAHOYA, & many more.
TYSON just beat HOLMES with such ease, that i have to beleive that a better HOLMES really wouldnt make much difference, because TYSON's style beats HOLMES
No man. Tyson was a ko artist. He wins by a spectacular ko or he doesn't(figure of speaking, i know he had some wins on points). So yeah, he knocked out old, rusty holmes. Holmes had a problem, his speed and tuiming was gone, he had no stanima anymore. This when he was fighting a man who could ko him in a heartbeat. It just didn't work for Holmes, he had no chance, prime Holmes would take Tyson to the later rounds but in this fight that would be in his own disadvantage cause he had no stanima.
tyson 1988 best since ali.holmes second best.Holmes gives holy a scare and beats mercer, mercer beats lewis.Tyson 1988 kills holmes.Tyson 88 best since ali.
crazy fight i see y foreman ducked holmes he could always put up agr8 fight even wen he losses gota be top 5 of all time hed beat both klitckos and valvue in the sme nite
Grandpa Holmes took Mercer to boxing school, lol. I never did like Holmes that much (mainly due to his defensive counter-punching style; I prefer more offensive-minded sluggers myself since they're more exciting to watch), but he truly is one of the great heavyweight fighters of the modern era and probably the last really great champion in that division-especially since Tyson couldn't keep it together long enough to make his case. Gotta love that left jab of Larry's, though. Best in the biz!!!
This fight retroactively defined Holmes greatness. If an old Larry Holmes could beat a prime Mercer then what does that say about Mercer's era? Up to this point, the media had said Holmes fought nobodies.
Great night for Larry Holmes. He was 42 years old but he boxed Mercer`s ears off. The crowd was chanting Larry`s name and he deserved it. Heavyweight Champion for almost 8 years and 20 title defenses.
Holmes one of the 3 greatest heavyweight champions of alltime.
mercer gave lewis everything he could handle but couldn't pull it off. his only notable win was over morrison. he lost all his other big fights (lewis, holyfield, holmes, klitchko, briggs). still, if he would've been the top american contender today.
I use to watch Larry Holmes for hours at his gym in Easton P.A. geting ready for this fight. Not only did Larry Holmes have the best jab in boxing. He had the best left hand in Boxing. Watch how he works it.
the last thing the division need is a lewis, he not only the most boring but he has the weakest ko ratio history, a prime lewis would be really bad for the division, you might as well just bring Vitali back on a wheel chair instead
well now the heavies can get away with fighting longer..i don't know why..but I do know this , i don't know how the HW champ of the world is. When Ali was fighting it was front page news! Tyson, Holmes and of course Big George's comeback, Evander and we cannot forget the now exciting because he's gone and we called him boring but he was great is ol' Lennox Lewis After that the heavies just died and rest is on the wrestling page. C'mon Lennox make a comeback! At the end of the day..Ali=G.O.A.T.
That's because the whole damn country was built on the brutal exploitation of one race. I feel the same way you do, but as a black American, I don't have the luxury of moving on because I still have to deal with these idiots. If I could leave I probably would. Please tell your countrymen about the evil national id card that they are forcing on us over here in May. We won't be able to fly without it!!! It has GPS technology. So much for getting out of here!
I appreciate what you say, and am not going to belittle what you feel and experience. I was talking in terms sports and issues that seem un related to Race - but somehow certain people bring race into it.
it the media that bring race or nationality into it.
WHen johnson become the first ever black champ, the american media try to treat him like shit, now the american media are doing the same shit with russian, as a matter of fact they give the heavyweight division les coverage
Yes, and a 42 year old Archie Moore and 38 year old Joe Louis as well as a 37 year old Joe Walcott were all passed it when Marciano defeated them. Give me a break pal, the excuses are endless.
Moore wasn't past it, he did better with age. He was at his peak in his late 30's and early 40's. He defied age. Walcott was barely past it, and Louis truly was past it.
Please, Moore himself said his era was the 30's. He was a decent heavyweight but dominated at light heavyweight. If Walcott was barely passed it explain why there are no other fights with him after Marciano? Exactly no excuses kid, both Moore and Walcott not to mention were light heavyweights. Also, would like to mention the fact that Patterson stopped Moore faster than Marciano could ever try. All three men were past their primes and that is a fact kid!
Nope. Walcott fought like he did in his prime against Marciano. Just because you retire doesn't mean your past it. Also, Moore was better at an older age. If you didn't notice, Marciano wasn't exactly in his prime against Moore either. Goldman changed up Rocky's style after the 2nd Charles encounter. He stopped Marciano from hitting as hard as he could with every shot, he made Marciano more of an overwhelm kind of guy. Made to tire them out. You kind sir, are an idiot.
and all I have seen from you is nothing but words typed down from your computer. Child I don't know you so please lets just keep it that way, beat it!
Great job kid, pat yourself on the back, better yet pat the helmet you have one for saving what's left of your worthless brain. No way in hell did Walcott fight Marciano like he did in his prime and no way in hell was Moore better with age. Kid you seriously need to stay in school to actually learn something instead of making stuff up yourself. Must be a lonely child!
Tyson fans, get over it! Just because Tyson stopped Holmes does not mean he is greater than Holmes or he would have beaten Holmes in his prime. I have evidence that suggest Tyson cannot win a fight when he is hurt or hits the canvas. THIS FACT SHOULD APPLY TO THE HEARTLESS HOLMES, NOT THE MENACING TYSON!
Holmes just like Ali are tailor made boxers that would lose against Tyson even if its not by knockout. Tillis lost every single fucking round kid are you serious? It was his best performance of his lusterless career and one of the worst performances made by Tyson but he still won the fight and was never knocked down.
Mike Tyson, at his prime, when he had the anger and the will powering the only goal in his mind: TO WIN : Is hands downs, maybe not the most skillful but the best boxer ever to enter the ring.
You can't count the Douglas fight because Tyson was ill, Rooney was not in his corner, Don King had stole his money, excuse after excuse after excuse!
Seems like your not that far behind in the river yourself kid. Using terms already used by many before you. As for the Douglas Tyson fight, Douglas won the fight because he wanted it more.
Tony Moret had to be the most insightful judge right there at the Tyson - Tillis fight. Believe me pal, Mike won all except for maybe 2 or 1 round(s). Give me a break, you weren't even born or old enough to remember that fight by hand, it was a pleasant fight from a first eye person's view.
This wasn't a matter of skill vs skill, as Tyson was under trained and not focused, but not the least of an excuse. No matter how good you are, you'll have to want it more than your opponent in order to get it. Douglas had more than enough reasons to take Mike out. A rematch is what scared Douglas, he said that uppercut hurt so bad, he had a toothache for a month.
Holmes went to a 15 round distance against Bervick when he was 31. The same Bervick who got quickly destroyed by Tyson. Foreman, Marciano, those guys could not catch Tyson. Tyson's head movements and footing was to quick for them. That was what made him dangerous. Amato taught that same style to Floyd Patterson and he never used it as effectly as Tyson. Tyson truly was at another level. Even till this day we havent seen anyone that was as powerful and as quick with the defense that Tyson had.
Minus the klitschko brother here the best of the 90's 1 Chris byrd 2 extremely old larry holmes 3 ray mercer 4. lennox lewis 5. washed up tyson 6. old foreman 7 andrew golata 8 riddick bowe 9. holyfield 10 michael moorer
agree holyfield is the biggest pussy, ur forgetting also toney was way past his prime.
both guy are about the same age.
also toney is a original middleweight and he was very, very, very old for a fat middleweight when he beat holyfield. holyfield was in brilliant shape and heavyweight mature at a very late as oleg maskaev is the champ and is the same age as holyfield was in this fight
ACommentator: Ali, why did you get inside Tyson's head.
Ali: I make fun of all of my opponents. Atleast Joe Frazier kept fighting. Frazier did not charge me with a stool because I called him a Gorilla. I think Tyson got frustrated when I knocked him down in round 5. Ali wins by DQ in round 6.
Kid you have some major issues and you seriously need to get your head checked. You must be a very lonely child with no friends to do some idiotic shit like this!
djk hahahaha change the j for a i ,you know nothing about boxing please change your sport hahaha spinks beat him twice ,he gave holyfield trouble wen he was way past hs prime just a shadow, the same holyfield that smashed tyson to bits, clown you make me laugh

Tyson was the only one that ever really BEAT UP Larry Holmes.
Elvisman2001 2 years ago 4
Yeah but Larry came back out from a long lay off then, he was rusty. He actually was better in this fight then he was against Tyson.
bcibibcibcpCB 2 years ago 2
MAYBE!, but the way TYSON beat HOLMES so easily leads me to beleive that he wouldve still handled any LARRY HOLMES that showed up.
usually when a great champion is not at his best, he still manages to put up a good fight anyway. FOREMAN with HOLYFEILD. ALI stopped late by HOLMES. LEONARD with TERRY NORRIS. CHAVEZ with DELAHOYA, & many more.
TYSON just beat HOLMES with such ease, that i have to beleive that a better HOLMES really wouldnt make much difference, because TYSON's style beats HOLMES
nevawrong 2 years ago

The first time I saw Holmes fight was the Tyson bout. So I don't see a legend when I see Holmes; I see a chump. Sorry, can't help it.

Holmes acted too much like an Ali wannabe.

Holmes was, at one time, Ali's sparring partner.

PeekaPeep 2 years ago 3
This fight retroactively defined Holmes greatness. If an old Larry Holmes could beat a prime Mercer then what does that say about Mercer's era? Up to this point, the media had said Holmes fought nobodies.
tightmadnessss 2 years ago 3
Great night for Larry Holmes. He was 42 years old but he boxed Mercer`s ears off. The crowd was chanting Larry`s name and he deserved it. Heavyweight Champion for almost 8 years and 20 title defenses.
Holmes one of the 3 greatest heavyweight champions of alltime.
ExplosiveThinMan 2 years ago
tyson beat holmes when holmes was 38.
so that must be a great when for tyson huh? : )
since holmes looked great against mercer.
& holmes looked great against holyfield & mchall also
nevawrong 2 years ago
Holmes was better in those fight because he was back in ritme. With Tyson he just came out of retirement.
bcibibcibcpCB 2 years ago
mercer gave lewis everything he could handle but couldn't pull it off. his only notable win was over morrison. he lost all his other big fights (lewis, holyfield, holmes, klitchko, briggs). still, if he would've been the top american contender today.
gaksolid 3 years ago
Yep, But Morrison spanked that ass for four rounds straight until Morrisons pisspoor conditioning caught up to him.
SouthernSniper74 3 years ago 3
He was robbed in the Lewis fight.
RONNlECOLEMAN 3 years ago 3
I use to watch Larry Holmes for hours at his gym in Easton P.A. geting ready for this fight. Not only did Larry Holmes have the best jab in boxing. He had the best left hand in Boxing. Watch how he works it.

Man, heavy weight boxing can be boring!! I love the middle through straw weight divisions.
Snotra 3 years ago
the last thing the division need is a lewis, he not only the most boring but he has the weakest ko ratio history, a prime lewis would be really bad for the division, you might as well just bring Vitali back on a wheel chair instead

well now the heavies can get away with fighting longer..i don't know why..but I do know this , i don't know how the HW champ of the world is. At the end of the day..Ali=G.O.A.T.

no shit people are such racest morons. i dont care about race. i just dont like morons any race thanks for saying what u did
greatufos 4 years ago

But thank to the Klitschko brother boxing is back, not even 1 american man can manage to win the lowest title out there
That how tough the division is

The heavyweight division is dismal right now.
allankles 4 years ago
It's in a transition- there are some decent Heavyweights. I like Klitschko, Ibragimov, there's seven foot Valuev, and the power-puncher Sam Peter.
We just need some real, exciting young talent. Problem is, today's amaeturs don't get the coverage and support necessary to do that. Even in America.
Back in the day, guys like Holmes, Foreman, Patterson, they got coverage as phenomonal amaeturs on television.

spink battered a 34 larry holmes.
what did tyson do to him.
spink won the gold medal at just 20 year old, that make him the youngest gold medalist of all the heavyweight champ since foreman.
If larry holmes after 10 years getting beaten by spink, manage to beat prime mercer, he also beat a prime holyfield but was robbed.
just imagine what spink would have done in the 90's when he was in his prime
titokenshamrock 4 years ago
Larry was way past it when he lost to Spinks. And if you call battered doing no damage and winning 2 highly controversial decisions, then ok.
Boxer2333333333333 4 years ago
Yes, and a 42 year old Archie Moore and 38 year old Joe Louis as well as a 37 year old Joe Walcott were all passed it when Marciano defeated them. Give me a break pal, the excuses are endless.
GOATIRONMIKETYSON 4 years ago
Moore wasn't past it, he did better with age. He was at his peak in his late 30's and early 40's. He defied age. Walcott was barely past it, and Louis truly was past it.
Boxer2333333333333 4 years ago
Please, Moore himself said his era was the 30's. He was a decent heavyweight but dominated at light heavyweight. If Walcott was barely passed it explain why there are no other fights with him after Marciano? Exactly no excuses kid, both Moore and Walcott not to mention were light heavyweights. Also, would like to mention the fact that Patterson stopped Moore faster than Marciano could ever try. All three men were past their primes and that is a fact kid!
GOATIRONMIKETYSON 4 years ago
Boxer2333333333333 4 years ago

Great job kid, pat yourself on the back, better yet pat the helmet you have one for saving what's left of your worthless brain. No way in hell did Walcott fight Marciano like he did in his prime and no way in hell was Moore better with age. Kid you seriously need to stay in school to actually learn something instead of making stuff up yourself. Must be a lonely child!
GOATIRONMIKETYSON 4 years ago
Spinks in the 90's? Tyson would beat him every time. Spinks doesn't have the build to take a punhc from mike.
izvn 4 years ago
Tyson fans, get over it! Just because Tyson stopped Holmes does not mean he is greater than Holmes or he would have beaten Holmes in his prime. I have evidence that suggest Tyson cannot win a fight when he is hurt or hits the canvas. THIS FACT SHOULD APPLY TO THE HEARTLESS HOLMES, NOT THE MENACING TYSON!
tightmadnesss 4 years ago
Exactly.
Boxer2333333333333 4 years ago
Holmes just like Ali are tailor made boxers that would lose against Tyson even if its not by knockout. Tillis lost every single fucking round kid are you serious? It was his best performance of his lusterless career and one of the worst performances made by Tyson but he still won the fight and was never knocked down.
GOATIRONMIKETYSON 4 years ago
Mike Tyson, at his prime, when he had the anger and the will powering the only goal in his mind: TO WIN : Is hands downs, maybe not the most skillful but the best boxer ever to enter the ring.
izvn 4 years ago
I agree, but he is the most technical of them all.
GOATIRONMIKETYSON 4 years ago
Thats why he never got up from a knock down to win right?
Boxer2333333333333 4 years ago
Boxer23...
You can't count the Douglas fight because Tyson was ill, Rooney was not in his corner, Don King had stole his money, excuse after excuse after excuse!
tightmadnesss 4 years ago
Seems like your not that far behind in the river yourself kid. Using terms already used by many before you. As for the Douglas Tyson fight, Douglas won the fight because he wanted it more.
GOATIRONMIKETYSON 4 years ago
Tony Moret had to be the most insightful judge right there at the Tyson - Tillis fight. Believe me pal, Mike won all except for maybe 2 or 1 round(s). Give me a break, you weren't even born or old enough to remember that fight by hand, it was a pleasant fight from a first eye person's view.
GOATIRONMIKETYSON 4 years ago
Tillis did not lose every round based on the officials.
tightmadnesss 4 years ago
This wasn't a matter of skill vs skill, as Tyson was under trained and not focused, but not the least of an excuse. No matter how good you are, you'll have to want it more than your opponent in order to get it. Douglas had more than enough reasons to take Mike out. A rematch is what scared Douglas, he said that uppercut hurt so bad, he had a toothache for a month.
GOATIRONMIKETYSON 4 years ago
Holmes went to a 15 round distance against Bervick when he was 31. The same Bervick who got quickly destroyed by Tyson. Foreman, Marciano, those guys could not catch Tyson. Tyson's head movements and footing was to quick for them. That was what made him dangerous. Amato taught that same style to Floyd Patterson and he never used it as effectly as Tyson. Tyson truly was at another level. Even till this day we havent seen anyone that was as powerful and as quick with the defense that Tyson had.

Am glad we got the klitschko brother,
they were really old people who conquer the 90 era.
no doubt holyfield was the worst of them and even th ewashed up tyson would have beaten evander holyshit if the headbutt were not allowed.
every other fighter ko tyson faster than holyfield could. bowe was quite a decent fighter but struggle against big guy like golata
titokenshamrock 4 years ago
holmes was alot younger when he fought tyson.
holmes was near 50 by the time he fought holyfield and mercer.
it just show how shit the division become after tyson era ended in 90
Lovekanyewest 4 years ago
agree holyfield is the biggest pussy, ur forgetting also toney was way past his prime.
both guy are about the same age.
also toney is a original middleweight and he was very, very, very old for a fat middleweight when he beat holyfield. holyfield was in brilliant shape and heavyweight mature at a very late as oleg maskaev is the champ and is the same age as holyfield was in this fight
AlexanderpovetiKING 4 years ago
ACommentator: Ali, why did you get inside Tyson's head.
Ali: I make fun of all of my opponents. Atleast Joe Frazier kept fighting. Frazier did not charge me with a stool because I called him a Gorilla. I think Tyson got frustrated when I knocked him down in round 5. Ali wins by DQ in round 6.
li vs Tyson post fight cont.
tightmadnesss 4 years ago
Kid you have some major issues and you seriously need to get your head checked. You must be a very lonely child with no friends to do some idiotic shit like this!
GOATIRONMIKETYSON 4 years ago
please do not mention holyshit he was ko by fat middleweight james toney, now that no heart and no chin
tyson took some punish from a priime ruddock but still come back and beat him

Holyfield is way past his best and was washed against Toney but he has one of the biggest fighting hearts I've ever seen in a fighter.
