The gear in the 80's was really expensive! Usually only the studios had samplers and 808's. There were few bedroom studios back then. But I have to say that analog tape still sounds amazing!
youtube vids i been surfing and decided to text on this one cuz there is soo much possibilities. y'all need to come with something hard, slow, ominous that speaks to the times and climate we in right now ...
track is nice and optimistic, big ups to all electronic-afolks keeping all genres alive, take it to the next level ...
i know this, i am talking about this ERA, not the technology of early 80's ...
one of the most complicated songs back then with technology back then that i havent personally heard duplicated in the NOW is Twilight 22 - Electric Kingdom
you have confirmed we are on the same page. to be specific, in Bam's era which goes back to early 70's - my point is the equipment NOW - 2009 - this current technology - back in early 80's - there would have been even more incredible music and art
you are helping me to understand where we are both coming from. i am an original B-boy persay, DJ from 1979 and on and at this time, i think the technology was in effect then but completely disparate and unavailable to folks at a street level
hip hop, electro, galacticfunk still wasnt really defined clearly
the equipment back then primary handicap was in the sequencing and ease/faciliation of throwing a beat together quickly. Bam and art baker a tom silverman ...
knew they needed a drum machine but there was none available so they rented a roland tr-808 and figured out how to program that thingin record time and manifested Planet Rock within hours - so the story goes - arthur baker a genius at mixing and silverman was tommy boy records - rest is history
and my brother, any vibes shared on a video can have meaning, bless up
i bought 2 808's, one in the mid 90's to compliment my akai mpc60II, i turned it on and couldnt make it produce sounds, i had all sorts of newer stuff and ended up selling that 808
so, i buy another 808 from my friend at innerclock systems in australia, it arrives and i cant make it make sounds, i send it to technician and come to find out the 808 was from before the way drum machines are made now
the knobs and an active pattern make sounds, i felt very dumb, then ...
lol i had something simillar happen to me. I started out software and used seer systems reality It was so forgiving I had the midi in and out simultaniously hooked up to a casio keyboard as a controller. Even with this midi loop it worked fine. Then i got a sunsyn cuase i wanted real analog. I hooked the midi up the same way both the in and the out and it didnt make a sound. I almost sent it back to the ebay seller. But just in the nick of time some one told me more about midi and it made sound
nice.... and thanks for your reply on the drum machines. i've just got an Machinedrum mk1 off ebay for US$600 :-) no sampling but well, can save up for a FR Revo. love your vids, keep them coming!
that's a sick deal on the MD.... I don't have sampling either. I'll probably upgrade someday, but i'm hoping to start building a modular soon and that's gotta come first ;)
dude this is good

Wow, this is really excellent. I love how the Mono/Poly sounds out of tune. It keeps me interested. You can't beat the analog sound, can you?

can anyone old school imagine if
King Bambaataa and this era had this technology?

an era is a period of time... eg, the early 80s.
if you say 'bambaataa's era' you're talking about the time period bambaataa was doing things.
Analogue synths and drum machines were around in bambaataa's era.

minus the semantics, cool concept

Yeah, sure..
It's just that all the stuff in this video here, things were pretty much identical back then to this gear...
so i see what you mean, but its not really related to this video specifically.

@dreadstock I heard the 808 came with a technician who advertised himself and the 808 as a service in the paper. Crazy times eh.

in awe at how they used knobs toggled this and that way to save sounds, patterns, make songs etc
i can totally believe in 1981 a tech would have been needed to do what Bam did with Planet Rock.
what i cant figure out about Planet Rock was how they made that plip plop squelchy sound that runs with the drum tracks,
way back then a DJ friend of mine made the sound off of what looked like a simmons octagon pad and some knobs on it

Hey, are you sequencing stuff on the jomox(besides the jomox itself)? I'm curious to know how comfortable/friendly that is.

if it sounds this good on YT imagine what it sounds live in real time. I love the mono/poly too bad I can only get the VST version

i like the music a lot and the screen composition itself is very nice indeed.
viewed merely from a designer's perspective,
a "Mondrian-esque" screen division becomes visible, with a conversational diagonal abstractism reminding me of a painting by Kandinsky.
therefore, this video is one of the "best-looking" live electronic music recordings - imho.
