I believe that this song tells the story of a man who woke up to there wife/partner/mother, or someone who is important to them and living with them, leaving them a note saying i'll be back by three. I think they are trying to say that the person died when they were out, but the man refuses to leave the house until the person comes home, because they are grieving the loss and refuse to accept the fact that the person is gone.
I think the narrator is a ghost, who's with me on it? He was an invalid, he died before she got back home and now he's a ghost just rattling around in this goddamn house. She left him a note--"Do you need anything?" He'd have had to call her on her cell phone, or she'd call him, for the list of anything he needed. Maybe he did call, even, an empty call by a ghost. The feedback thing with the cellphones kind of underscores him slipping away. Just a thought. This is one haunting song!
I am a musician and i moved to spain to be with my fiance and this song captures a lot of the feelings i have had not being able to work for 9 months..i think about all the time..thank you
Someone must have missed the story about the Titanic, when the captain said,"Not even God Himself can sink this ship". Well, when you use God's name in vain like it's no big deal, you're setting yourself up for failure...
Repent... respect God, or reap the consequences (Exodus20:7)...
just seen these guys in Leeds, so a talented bunch (i'm described as having a heart of stone but i've never been closer to tears when i heard this for the first time)
when you see them live, they have everyone in the audience call eachother and create the feedback loop, and it creates this powerful ambiance that is really amazing.

hes using the phone to create a reverb effect via feedback - not interference. Very cool.

@narcoman2 Exactly, a basic feedback loop. Great party trick.

Not sure if you were joking or not, but he's actually using the interference from the cell phones to create that high pitch sound. Pretty awesome.
