Why do oil wells rejuvenate themselves? Oil is the slimy crap that comes from the molten center of the earth, near the edge you see the oil form from the Iron core and rock. Ever heat up metal with a torch and find it oily? Well that's where it comes from.

Historically, it usually, is not the extreme that actually happens. Peak oil will occur, probably sooner, rather then later. HOWEVER, we will find a way around it. We will have to use less oil. More efficient vehicles, using a bicycle (shock horror for those fatties out there) for shorter trips. How many people are oil gluttons? Why drive an SUV in the middle of a city? Efficiency will give us much more time.

Also speaking as a scientist I can assure you that 'renewable sources' are exceedingly expensive compared to fossil fuels - and that this is highly unlikely to change.... Fission? Well uranium reserves aren't unlimited. Fusion? Don't get your children on a great idea that may not come to fruition.

@neverfearchrisishere I am not an American, Im an Australian, but yes, we by and large are just as much addicted to oil. I think, though that if the petrol price is allowed to rise high enough, peoples behaviour will change. They will whinge, moan and complain, but then their behaviour will change. In Europe they ride bicycles a lot, I cant see why this cant be more wide spread. Personally I ride a bike where I can and you would be amazed at how much petrol this saves.

@KrunchyJD Vehicle use is a small part of your oil consumption. Every mouthful of food. Every item in your house. Everything around you has been made and transported across the world with oil.

So if you think that all you have to do is cut down on transport when oil prices rise, your wrong, you'll also see food prices and goods prices rise considerably.

Transport uses the MAJORITY of the oil. Not all, but the majority. Reducing dependence on motorised transport, and particularly private cars will reduce the amount of oil needed. Ellectric rail, walking and bicycling will cut down on the amount of oil needed. Building compact walkable cities and having access to nearby food, will go a long way. Conservation is the answer.

@KrunchyJD America, or Australia, will NOT collapse if oil goes into depletion IF & ONLY IF we are smart and create tough conservation measures, and we can start by penalising frivolous driving of cars. We should save the remaining oil for where it is needed, and tax it heavily for driving.

There are many Australians and Americans who could do with the exercise as well, and walking or cycling up the street will not hurt them one bit.

Transportation and food use the most oil. So yes that all will help. The problem is (atleast in the U.S) people dont realize what is headed our way. @ShowtimeLakers87 Energy concentration reaching the earth per meter is small. Efficiency of affordable panels is aweful - most of the photovoltaic cells you can buy to stick ontop of your house are a con - they will not cover the energy cost involved in their manufacture.

I'm talking about concentrating the suns power like a magnifying glass in order to create steam, that steam turns turbines which can create power much like your alternator in your car does. with enough power and storage being generated you can have enough power even when its dark or rainy out. The idea is to have enough storage capability for when you can't collect.

Area of solar panel needed = 1 million square kilometers.

Practicality? ZERO.

obviously you could reduce this somewhat, but your still talking about the area of a medium sized country. Imagine cleaning all those? Replacing them?

The problem is, though, that we don't really know how far out in the future such a solution will become available, it seems that fusion energy has been a mere 15 years away for the last 30 years.

Wind=destroys birds which screws up the eco-system. Amount of power provide is limited

Solar=requires large amounts of red metals which require mining to get out of the ground. Mining requires oil to run equipment. Economically not viable at current cheap oil prices.

Nuclear=Waste vs. reward. You can plant trees to get rid of Carbon Dioxide. Nuclear waste is there forever.

Peak oil is bullshit. No one knows how much oil there is.

solar and tide are still very expensive, when compared to oil which is very very cheap, wind has only recently become economical and reliable.

It will take a very very long time to make them economical and if at all, how ever even with wind, solar, wave ,nuclear and every thing else we are still well short over replacing the energy that oil currently gives us, this is the real problem

100 years ago, Tesla was working on a project to supply electricity at no cost and without wires when J.P. Morgan cut his financing. Had he succeeded - allow 50 years, say, for perfecting the science, solving distribution and infrastructure problems, etc - who's to say we couldn't have had free or unbelievably cheap electicity in unlimited amounts over the last 40 or 50 years?

This argument about how long it will take is a non-argument. It all could have commenced decades ago.
