Plus, they call him Dark Zero in Japan, he's capable of possession and even looks a little like Zero. "Long ago" doesn't mean much in a game like Kirby, where there isn't even a recorded timeline.

Besides King Dedede, Zero is the main villain in the kirby Series. Dark Matter, his dark body, appeared in Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby's Dream Land Three, Kirby 64, and Kirby Mass Attack as the boss of Kirby Quest. Zero has only appeared in this, but Zero 2 was in Kirby 64. Dark Mind from Kirby and the Amazing Mirror is his mirror form, dark nebula from Squeak Squad in Dark Zero in Japan, and Drawcia has a pact with him. Case Closed.

I think they're already past Zero-Three, actually. Dark Nebula (final boss of Squeak Squad) was called Dark Zero in Japan, and the Japanese version of Canvas Curse also states that Drawcia had made a pact with Zero (which would explain why Drawcia Soul's attacks are also very similar to Zero's).

I had an idea of Zero-Three. It's like it has possessed the body of a young maiden who begs Kirby to save her.

"Kirby... Help me... My soul is not alone, inside me..."

Then she morphs into a half-human, half 02 with three eyes, her human eyes and 02's eye in her forehead, long and sharp claws, a halo over her head and bat-like Demon wings.Shoot 02's eye until it blows into a cloud of blood, and the maiden will revert back to her normal self, congratulating Kirby and giving him with a cheek kiss.

@r4shka Strangely I've thought about Zero 3 like that in a similar way. With it possessing a host is the same, but when it reveals itself, it does something similar to Kirby 64 and the red eye appears through the host's mouth. Zero's wings appear through the host's back and the victim's skin turns pale, he/she becomes a mere puppet to Zero's will. Damn human possession is gruesome nowadays...

I love how this song retains some levels of cheerfulness despite the fact that Zero uses his own blood as a weapon, yet in the fight with Zero Two, they completely abandoned all cheerfulness in favor of the epically sad battle theme that we remember fondly.
