Not to say any of these three is lesser than the other, but Phelps hadn't done any vigorous training to prep for this meet, and when he did just come out and swim, he barley even lost. He came out a few weeks ago, and even crushed Lochte in everything they swam against each other in. It may be a hard truth for some, but when Phelps buckles down and begins to do legit training sessions to build up for the Olympics, not very many people can touch him.

If you understood this sport most of you would realize none of them are training at 100% wait till the olympics when all of the athletes will be at 100% and then we can see who the best swimmer is.

Agnel is only 19 years old, and despite of his age, stands along olympic athletes. I mean, he just broke the french record while arriving just a few second's fractions behind Michael m*th*rf*cking PHELPS. The guy is gifted. You go, Yannick!

@xtermin - Lochte is the Man right now. Phelps *may* reclaim the 200m free in London, since he's still the record holder, but Lochte is the new record holder in the 200 IM. So, an objective person would say that Phelps will return to form in 2012 and win the 200 free, and Lochte will win the 200 IM. However, with Lochte's domination right now, even that is questionable, and he may take the 200m free in London as well.

If Thorpe somehow makes it back, the 200 free will be *very* exciting.

funny how there always has to be bickering about who's best;). it was:

'biedermann's best'

'no phelps'

'no biedermann'

'just because of the suit'

now it's phelps vs lochte. is it so hard to accept that all three of them are fantastic (freestyle-)swimmers. this time obviously lochte is in best shape, but the other times are also incredibly fast (without suits btw). on another day in another place biedermann might have won-or phelps for that matter. definitely looking forward to this one in 2012!!

Anybody who knows the sport knows Lochte as a guy who has been around a while and just overshaddows by Phelps. Michael is not brilliantly on form, Biedermann didn't produce a huge time considering he is the record holder but was not out of the picture and Lochte put in a very good well timed swim. The placings and times give a good indication of where things stand. All three are amazing athletes.

@lostn65 - That statement is as way-off as can be. In fact, the truth is just the opposite. Biedermann swam a very good time - exceptional for "textile suits" actually - and actually proved that he's a legitimate swimmer that does not need the special suits.

Biedermann beat proven contenders like Park and Meichtry, and nearly caught Phelps as well. If that's "not so hot" to you, then just about every Olympic swimmer out there sucks - according to your standard.

@pranalad What you don't appear to understand is Biedermann hasn't been within 3 seconds of his world record until this meet. Biedermann's size meant the suits helped him more than your average swimmer. Similar progressions have been noted in swimmers of similar size like Matt Grevers who hasn't come within a second of his Olympic silver medal 100m back performance after the suits were phased out.

And if you really think Phelps gives a damn right now, you're wrong. He'll be back at OT's/London

Acmilan is right. Lochte is an all-around swimmer just like Phelps, and over the past year has overtaken Phelps as the best overall swimmer in the world. It has nothing to do with Phelps getting "rusty" as much as it has to do with it being Lochte's time to shine now.

in melbourne '07 phelps's 3rd 50 was remarkable, but it still looks very promising that he has a chance to defend his title in london

I'd love to know how anybody can swim a world-class event at those times after not swimming for months. Lochte will get owned in 2012 and that's a fact. After that, it doesn't matter what happens... Phelps won't be topped in less than 20 years

@Xtermin8R645 yes I do swim, but I'm not very good. I understand that phelps had a year off, and has the perfect swimmers' body. You must remember that lochte has hadbto recover from injury that set him out for 8 months as well. Since then he has completely overhauled his diet and training regime. Regardless of what happens in 2012 it is nice to know two of the best all around swimmers are American. I can't wait for the 200 IM!
