Chessies are very intelligent animals. Mine had me trained to give him biscuits on demand. He treed a bear once. Very protective of his littermates (my human children) Wouldn't own any other dog.
I love this breed :) First dog I ever had (wouldn't recommend them as a first-time dog to get though, my family wasn't dog-savvy and just kinda brought a puppy home one day). Eventually my family revolved around these dogs and we even bred some of them.
I'd like to try to take a chesa to newfoundland and see if the match the newfie or lab up there, I've never seen the chesa in action but newfoundland's dogs are amazing at what they do
They are an independent-thinking breed, as the video suggest, making them very hard to train. It takes a lot of training and, more importantly, patience, to make them do what you want them to do. They are generally a one-person dog.
I have chesa and her name is chase and she's 8 years and when she was yung she liked to swim is the closest lake pool river and swam there was and she liked to run now she's lazy is that normal
@HusbandnWifeDuo They are relativaley easy to train. consistancy is important!! Make sure you are using positive reinforcment when training. Keep training sessions 15 to 20 mins long and lots and lots of excercise. Make it well known that YOU and YOU only are top dog.
@SaraD2557 Thank you Sara. We are thinking of getting a female Chessie (spayed) when our male Kuvasz pup (neutered) gets older and settles down a bit. We will only be engaging her in water-based retrieving activities and in hiking trips, no hunting.
Wrong. They "Jump" into water, not "Dive". They don't like to go underwater. Black Lab's can dive, but Chessie's won't. They can swim all day long, tho! My dog, Smokey, is the best dog I ever had, or ever will! He is very aggressive toward other male dogs, and that can be a problem. He also doesn't tolerate kids well. He does loves my kids. Very protective of his peeps. Hate coyotes with a passion! Ignores ducks. Multiple stick retriever. Incredible jumper. Super strong. For sure the Alpha Dog!
I'm on my 3rd Chessie since 1980. A more fiercely loyal, intelligent animal, you will never find. I thought I was a natural dog trainer (until I got my Bull Terrier) because the Chessies work so hard at understanding and executing what their masters want. They make great house dogs as long as you work them in some way. That said, a Chessie could pine away if separated from his/her people; this dog is your dog for life. I'll never not have one.
@mabuescher I have an apartment, but there are places near by to take a chessie, I have to decide whether I want to get a chessie by the end of this month. Will a chessie be ok in a 2 bed apartment?
This isn't a house dog. It's a hunting dog. Specifically waterfowl. That's their nature. People shouldn't get this dog unless they plan to bring them out to hunt.
@brandonbmbmudder I disagree I have owned a pure bred for 6 years he is house trained sleeps by my bed every night and does not misbehave and great around the kids its all about how you train them. I am to the point where we do not need to have him on a leash when walking through the woods and do not need to pen him up when i leave the house he stays on the deck and guards the house. That being said we do live in the country so he has loads of space to run free to get his energy out.
GAAAR!!! I REALLY WANT THIS DOG!! IT CAN BE A VISUAL DETERRENT to STRANGERS TOO!! SADLY I CAN'T FIND ANY OF THESE IN MY COUNTRY, AND IMPORTING IS EXPENSIVE!! I'd rather buy these dogs than adopt, because I might end up adopting dogs with potential aggression. I'd buy from a good breeder.
Hey im sorry to tell you that i had a Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Tucker! He was the best dog in the world! I have never told anyone bout the accident He attacked me and i still haave the SCAR from 2END grade and i could see the inside of my arm!! i was scared
I used to have one then he attacked me and I could see the inside of my arm! It was scary and we had to give him away i miss him so much!!!! Now I have two pugs one named Lucky and the other named Skip!
i have a chessie and they are actually really great dogs. they are very loyal to there owners. the only problem with them, yes, is there aggression but they can be tamed down quite a bit and can be considered almost as calm as a lab
your audio fucking sucks...im sick of clicking on dogs 101 videos and ending up seeing your shit videos with piss poor audio. fuk you.

My dad once had one. Whenever he would take the dog to the lake, the dog would jump in after whoever/whatever was in the water, and "rescue" them/it.

NIce, but the Lab out swims all dogs and retrieves just the same or better.
Hm0oBVaNg 1 year ago
@Hm0oBVaNg In your personal, subjective opinion.
DracIsBack 1 year ago
Labs cant do what Chessies do.
No dogs can. It would kill them.
Open Sea Water diver ducks will kill dogs, thats where Chessies shine.
Tougher conditions the better.
Not all hunters need chessies, but those that do, nothing can do what a Chessie can.
