  • Do the timing that's what mine was just doing.

  • Maybe one or more spark plug won't work

  • i had a problem like this on my tpi, one of my fuel injector fuses was blown, so i replaced it and it ran perfect after that, so check the fuses you have two... one for each bank

  • u must have ur rpms hooked up to ur speedomader

  • if you have replaced the IAC then start checking hoses it could be a vacum problem

  • Ahh I know your problem. It's about the time you scrap the oil dripping Chevrolet and get yourself a Ford Mustang ;)

  • tps

  • bad mass airflow sensor...u got poor oil pressure too

  • timing might be a problem too but its deff more than that haha

  • engine knock sounds bad

  • @brobinson75 could be broken rocker had the same thing on my 83 changed and rockers from after market to G.M they last longer but still had problems install a vacume gauge in the car and you can till if it goes again or that you have a vacume leak

  • my 89 iroc did the same thing, its a vacume leak. replace the tpi runner gaskets and it will stop. if that does not work take the idle air control valve out and clean it

  • mine had the same problem

its the MAF or IAC sensors

the plug ins could just be cracked up and need to be replaced. that was my problem.

  • my buddy had the same problem,, what he did was tape a dime to the throtle under the hood so that it idles faster and dosnt dog down and die like that nemore

  • I had the same problem with my camaro 86.

I learned that 90% of those cases are solved by changing the idle air control valve (IAC) or the mass air flow sensor (MAF). The IAC might be from 60 to 150$ for a new one. The MAF might be more expensive.

Otherwise, try to change your pickup coil.

  • Well your 383 i would imagine has a decent cam in it which really throughs off the stock computer. TPI works goos when its tuned but you may need some bigger injectors. Plus the bigger stroke doesnt help the computer. Get a tune then see what happends.

  • I'll take my camaro over ur slow import POS.

  • its probably fuel injected if so install a new o2 sensor. if not and it has o2 sensors install one anyway that is a trait of bad o2 sensors

  • "knock knock" Who's there? Oh that's just my Chevy lol

  • turn the idle up?

not getting the proper air to fuel ratio?

or maybe u sure check some of your engine parts to make sure not any bolts are loose so it don't fuck with ur overall vaccum

    Just some thoughts

  • thats why i lve just a simple carb. distributer cap with points, no electronic bullshit

  • very smart person

  • Computer problems. Its not puttin in enough fuel.

  • Sup bro my 94 R33 Skyline does that as well just after start up... my mates have said coolant sensors or things like that...

  • YeaH ..i think its also da egr valve...or a restricted vaccum hose...

  • tps voltage map or maf is this f i or carb

  • rod and intake as said be 4

  • you have a rod knocking/spun a crank bearing. look at the oil pressure it shouldnt be throbing like that

  • no oil is part sounds like a intake prob

  • I noticed that you have a 383 stoker, if its fuel injected, have you changed the stock computer chip. I had this problem on a cammed 350 tbi. Changed chip and ran perfect

  • rod knocking

  • its poor quality, but its sounds like its already knockin. just me?

  • also if it has a EGR valve, take that thing off and put a block plate on that shit! to tell you the truth i think all that emissions bullshit killed the muscle car

  • check out the oil pressure switch, if that engine has one which it should. then change your fuel filter to make sure and hope that it is just a small fix

  • My 1991 Camaro RS (305 TBI 5.0L 170hp) is doing a very very similar thing... but I can get it into gear and up to regular operational rpms if I play with the gas a bit... replacing the idle air and throttle position sensors, and replacing the intake manifold gasket *waterport leak* did not fix the problem. I'm going try the O2 and MAP sensors next. Throttle body whines after gasket replacement but is intermittent.... need to time the distributor and get TDC better....

  • also check the timing, I had the same prob on my 87.

  • Check the vacuum lines

  • hell i wouldnt be worried about the idle. YOU AINT GOT NO OIL PRESSURE!! fix the oil pressure first then worry about the idle.

  • i agree, dont ruin the engine before u can fix it!!

  • i dont think this is wat ur talkin about i had the same problem with me windstar it tured out t obe a vaccum plug that was unpluged

  • If you dont have stall speed get one!

  • The idle. Hell you have no oil pressure eather. Rebuild that junk.

  • I had this problem and it was a dirty intake mixed with valves being completely messed

  • ur timings a lil off ..no big problem..i have an 86 iroc with a 350 and it does the same thing..had the timing adjusted now it idles fine

  • 1986 iroc 350? only 50 were made, but no records showing they were sold to the public. you must have an aftermarket 350....

  • My 89 Camaro did this same thing it was a combination between MAF and o2 sensor also if there is a exhaust leak or intake manifold leak it will not idle properly

  • im having this problem with my 89 camaro rs mine is so bad that it cuts off in traffic

  • mine was doing that but i just cleaned out the throttle body and it was just fine then it was floating around between 5 and 20

  • i still say the iac thats the only thing i have seen that will make one do that and i once got 3 bad alternators in a row until i got the 4th one it was good so never say never new parts can be bad

  • It's not the EGR. Code 34 means there's low airflow indicated at the MAF. Any number of things could be causing it to throw the code. Is your TPS set to spec? is the IAC clean and functioning? Is the wiring to the MAF good? Shoot me an e-mail message and I can go into some more detail. I had a code 34 on my GTA a few months ago an it was a bitch to figure out.

  • Wow. Never imagined Youtube would be this helpful. The IAC has been replaced, have not been able to confirm that the new unit actually works as it should. The IAC passage I can't get into due to the screws being 'welded' in there by age. I may have to re-do the MAF wiring, could be the cause of the code. TPS is set correctly.

  • Try unplugging the MAF sensor, then start it and see if the idle improves. This will put the ECM into limp home mode. If it runs better without the MAF, you're having a MAF related problem. Try replacing the MAF power and/or burnoff relays before replacing the MAF itself or the MAF connector. Usually, water or condensation will get inside the relays causing them to fail.

  • The relays should be on the driver's side firewall right above the brake booster. I can send you a picture of them if you're not exactly sure where they are.

  • Right next to the fuel pump relay, right?

  • Yep, that's them. Did you try running it with the MAF disconnected?

  • tune your carb

  • It's TPI.

  • @leetwanker You don't have MAF then do you? It's MAP

  • Change your timing

  • Timing is 6º BTDC. Just like it says it should be on my engine bay sticker.

  • Timing is 6 degrees BTDC. Just like the sticker says it should be.
