@tallgirlbp They never say. It seems like a lot of different things though; schizophrenia, post traumatic stress disorder (due to her parents' death), or autism (only some of her behaviour correlates).

Mary Stu's prodigiously talented at conveying heartbreak. Her "I-Hate-You" scene always gets me. It gets even sadder when she told Benny she wanted raisins on her tapioca. She felt her life, like the raisins, was stolen, and she was humiliated.

And about the "not remembering filming the bus scene", I think we could read as not remember FILMING it. She might remember playing that scene but didn't remember when they yelled out "action" and "cut".

@ursusarctosana It's not uncommon at all for people with high functioning Asperger's to be have a talent for sarcasm. My younger brother has Asperger's (high functioning) and he's pretty great at sarcasm...too good actually lol

I've seen this movie many times, and have heard most of the discussions about what Joon's particular illness might be. Honestly, I don't think that is really important, in terms of the movie's appeal. The truly wonderful thing is how Sam is able to see the beauty of the person within, and love Joon in spite of her brokenness.

I think Joon also has Autism and a sensory integration disorder. That explains why she can't handle loud sounds and riding on the bus. She has a sort of meltdown from the stress of riding on the bus. She also doesn't make a lot of eye contact and is very blunt with her comments. This is the sign of a nonverbal communication disorder and inhibited ability to read body language and relate to others.

@ursusarctosana No, I think she's too high functioning to have full out Autism or really even a more mild Autism. Maybe Asperger's though and I would certainly say Schizophrenia. Sensory integration and those meltdowns are symptoms of both of those. And maybe Joon was supposed to have more of a communication stigma, but it looks to me that her communication skills here are quite good and she has a handle on sarcasm. Benny is the cause for the other stuff lol Just my observation and opinion!

I mean, I can understand that he just wants to keep Joon safe; he's been taking care of her for so long that he can't imagine anyone else taking her away or being able to take responsibility for her. @FlummiFee i thought it was possible she had post traumatic stress disorder. PTSD makes people REALLY freaky sometimes. They're perfectly normal except when they get in situations where the trauma kicks in and then their brain breaks. And they have an episode. PTSD affects people differently. Not all PTSD patients are like joon and some are way more severe just as some are far less severe.

Well yeah, but... he is so absorbed in his role...I mean he thinks he is condemned to take care of her instead of actually doing something for her so she can be a little more independent and lead a more normal life. Sam arrived to her life and he saw how well Joon reacter and how well Sam adapted to her so he should encourage their relationship while guiding them ...

@faithdyke2 because people are dumb. Our culture brainwashes us into thinking that it's somehow wrong to ask questions about someone who is different or who has a handicap. When in reality, those people WANT to be able to talk comfortably and openly about what makes them different. People are brainwashed and are responding brainlessly like the good little sheepies they are. People don't know why they gave a thumbs down. they just know that they're "supposed to". They don't think beyond that.
