I love this film! Grew up with it and now I actually understood some of what they were saying at the beginning when they were speaking in German and I'm not even fluent in German! So cool! :) Thanks for uploading this scene! I haven't watched this in a long time!
@klocka88 That's because Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian (the languages spoken by the "Vikings") are related to English. The closest language to English is Frisian, but the other Nordic languages still have a number of mutually intelligible words (kom = come, är = is, be, are, jag = I). For example, the crone: "Vem skall bli den första mannen?" is "Who will be the first man?"
@GeneralGrievous18 My favorites are buliwyf (1)-helfdane (2)-hyglak (3)-edgtho (4)-rethel (5)-weather (6)-ragnard (7)-Halga (8)-Herger (9)-skeld (10) What all lol
I had the impression, maybe I'm wrong, that the depiction of the vikings wasn't meant to be entirely accurate but rather to reflect the cultures that the vikings produced and the languages they produced, and so it made homage to several of them.
Without the arabs this movie would be the most epic and godlike Movie ever. Dont get me wrong also like it is now its my favourite Movie. All Hail Odin
they are speaking a mix between the 4 Scandinavian languages Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic, i am Swedish and i understand about 90% of this scene
@vaultkeeper2 It also sounds like Frisian, I also could understand maybe 80% of it. Especially the numbers. in the end, where she says ''treten''. it's almost identical to the Frisian ''tretjen''
@evildeathmonkey1 and in Swedish it is "tretton", Frisian is indeed simular to the Scandinavian languages, i also know that "Germany" is pronounced as "Tyskland" in Frisian, in Swedish(and Danish and Norwegian) its actually both pronounced and spelled as "Tyskland"
@vaultkeeper2 When I have some money I plan to go to Sweden for holiday in the summer. I hear it's a very nice place. I'm getting a little sick of all the bullshit here in the Netherlands ):
this movie in underrated. i always wondered about the band of people there.. are all 12 supposed to be scandinavian? the scout guy doesn;t look it... the ginger looks scottish/irish.
In scandinavia we used to speak what is now close to icelandic. A mixture between the languages we still speak. Meaning Swedish, Danish and Norwegian mixed with icelandic.
@andynator88 Do you know, if there is a script available? I presume they used a kind of anicent form of norwegian. Therefore it is hard to understand.The timeframe for the story the year 922 ad I read somewhere. At that time learned people spoke other languages than those we know now. Like Old-German which very few germans could understand these days. They would call it gibberish ;) "insprinc haftbandun, infar wîgandun." "Escape from your chains, escape from your enemies."
@JohannVF I think 5 is the one with the blue cape. He's in the 30's. One fhe warriors who ambushes into the. th wooden house. 6th and 7th is the archer and his archer compagion, the boy.

@BloodyMrRaven For what I have read about, they speak norwegian but there are also some lines that do not make sense at all.

@BloodyMrRaven The words resemble in some ways norwegian, but the language can hardly be called anything but gibberish.
