I really wished more movies were made of "The Night Stalker"with Dan Curtis(Dark Shadows) at the helm. They were creepy! The TV series just wasn't the same (although the late, great Darren McGavin made it watchable),And like Columbo,Carl Kolchak was one of the greatest detectives of all time-or as Carl put it "I'm just a dumb reporter'.
At 3:47 is oneof my favorite scenes in this TV classic. If it was made today and if i was Carl Kolchak, i added AND F*CK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!! to the yellng part.
Note this was written by Richard Matheson, who's written so many other great things (including "Duel" and that episode of "The Twilight Zone" where William Shatner sees the creature on the plane's wing).
@MegaWolfgang There really is an underground, old city of Seattle. The Travel Channel (I think) have an excellent video about it. I watched it on YT a couple of years ago; you might still be able to find it here. In any case, there are a bunch of vids on YT about the Seattle underground city.
i too remember these movies and the night stalker scared me as well i am almost 49,i will never forget the night stalker it was scary for tv and the music i think it was by robert cobert who also did dark shadows i keep hearing about a big screen version of the night stalker hope they do it.
Kolchak really has quite the throwing arm, doesn't he? In this movie, and in the episode "The Chopper", he hits exactly what he was aiming for, and in half-light.
If any of you reside in the town of Riverhead [Suffolk County, NY], I donated the entire VHS set of 'The Night Stalker' to Riverhead Free Library. This was a period during the late 90's when I got into getting hard-to-find programs through Ebay. I bought a lot of ABC 'Movie of the Week' titles as well. Pressed for space, I had to part with most of the collection. By the way, 'The Girl Most Likely' can be found at the Lindenhurst Library.
@EstelleVEdwards Hi, I was just wondering the name of the actress who wanted to be a reporter/begged Kolchak to let her tag along and how old is she now??
I love the lighthearted conclusion of the film with the with the hilarious row between Kolchack and Vincenzo 3:46
This time around though initially furious after he got screwed over and fired again Kolchack ultimately doesn't allow it to get him down and just laughs it all off as he, along with Vincenzo, head off for New York. The two were inseperable.
Shows like the Original NS,may have been ''schlockey''{?}and had low budgets, but they were quality entertainment, that nearly anyone could view, without fear of getting mooned, flashed,or having to endure a needless sex scene, unlike 90 percent of today's media.
Sure,it boiled down to ''monster of the week''but it was always interesting,well-written,and the character chemistry was dynamic.
And it expanded my knowledge of myths and legends.
Speaking of six degrees of separation, Darren McGavin was in the pilot movie for The Six Million Dollar Man. Did anyone know that? It's a shame that the ABC Network doesn't take its classic programs seriously. It should be putting together entire catalogues of its popular 70's series, including 'Movie of the Week', and making them available for an entire new generation to enjoy. I would watch these programs over and over. I hate a lot of the crap that is shown on TV today.
Naysgrace: While I remember The Night Stalker series of 1974 or 1975, I never knew that there was this movie? Many thanks for doing this. Most appreciated.
" Thanks Vincenzo! Thanks for Nothing!!!" The yells on Carl Kolchak directed at his boss before throwing a steel ball threw his office window. Yes Kolchak was rude and UNGRATEFUL. Sometimes his boyish behaviour was downright hilarious. And he wondered why he often got into trouble by the authorities. And poor Tony always had to bale his sorry ass out of it everytime. Kolchak! You were a thoughtless boob!
Richard Anderson. Best remembered as Oscar Goldman in The Six Million Dollar Man playing the blood thirsty alchemist named Doctor Richard Malcolm. Seemed unusual, but for Kolchak fans, they didn't care if an actor as well known as him on television at that time, played a nocturnal villain who wanted to gain immortality through Jack The Ripper like means.
Simon Oakland & Darren McGavin had amazing chemistry through this series. I also think that Darren was a very under rated actor !! I have always been a huge fan of his - in fact I went on his official website and sent a message and I received an answer the next day !
Let me tell Y'all something. I am 50 years old now. I remember seeing these movies on ABC Movie of the Week when they aired in prime-time in 1972-73. They were so cool! Scared us to death! The Night Stalker was better, but Night Strangler had its appeal. We wanted more. There was supposed to be another tv movie, but Darren McGavin had problems with Dan Curtis as a director. ABC wanted more, thus the weekly tv show. As a teenager the 2 movies scared me to death. I hope you new folks enjoy them!
I had no idea they had made a whole feature movie with Kolchak... This came as a surprise. Thanks for posting it.
And Vincenzo rules!!!!! You think he is going to have a heart attack any minute, lol. I don't know how the poor man made it through the whole series!!!
@rickymolotov - Usually, sequels leave me (and everyone else...) cold. However, I think the 'Night Strangler' pilot was even better than the first movie. Too bad that the only surviving cast member from the series is Jack Grinnage, who played Ron Updyke. Everyone else - Ruth McDevitt, Simon Oakland, and Darren himself have gone to that big gig in the sky. Of course, Richard Anderson is still with us.
As a contnuation of a post I made on a Night Stalker Movie clip how there are two scary elements - the obvious horror of the story and the scary nature of suppression by the authorities and an obliging media. The truth is something to be suppressed. Maintain the fictions, use the superstitions, keep people ignorant (and ultimately dependent). THAT'S what the Night Stalker was about. So remember the State is not your friend and Foxnews AND MSNBC etc et al aren't either. TV with meaning even then
It makes you wonder if there really are things/creatures like Skorzeny and Malcolm
out there, being aided and abetted by our politicians and governments, because they know that the risk of exposing the truth would ruin thousands of reputations.
Seeing the night stalker as a kid really scared me! And this follow-up wow. The New Night Stalker which didn't do that well. It should have been Kolchack's kid who took over for his father after Yonou Skorzeny's vampire children killed him!
