  • SOMTHING ELSE.JOHN

  • He said he was 38, so this was recorded about 1984.

  • "Spending 8 hours in a library without any books" - brilliant!

  • I love you John, in a loving way :)

  • i was born long after the VW. but i was a junky for a while, and this song used to make me so sad. it still does, but for different reasons. sad songs can really tell a story. even though this is a veterans song, it reaches a lot of people who are just trying to make sense of their lives. john prine can make you feel someting, even when you're numb.

  • Yeah John, that works.

  • @RONMAL Amen to that always. God Bless them all.

  • I knew Sam Stone. We joined on the "buddy" system. Marines. He passed the physical, I blew out my knee at the physical and didn't. He went, three PURPLE HEARTS, BRONZE STAR AND MANY OTHERS. A real American hero. He was an all American boy. Star athlete, rock 'n roll band, crew cut, never drank. Came back as Sam Stone. Big drinker, big "no fear" fighter at 140 lbs. Just died, I miss him. God bless Viet Nam Vets. . . . . . . . God bless all the heros. Thanks.

  • @RONMAL Thanks for your story, RIP hero...and peace to you

  • @michaelb5e2 no one will ever say it better. perfect. Steve Goodman. Emmy Lou. Blaze Foley. Townes Van Zandt. Merle. Waylon. Not many others.

  • john prine is a perfect example of the difference between an artist and an act, an act does what he hopes you'll like an artist does what he feels and doesn't really care who likes it John is an artist in every sense

  • im a sam stone ..falluja 2004 iraq vet.. .' i almost lost my leg .. n got hooked on opiates... now i use heroin ... it killed my ptsd but its killing me too

  • @mesoneld Brother, we'll be praying for you, I hope you find peace and thank you for your service.

  • @mesoneld Please man, search the drug "suboxone". It's a miracle drug that can take the worst heroin addict and get him off the shit instantly. You need to find a doctor near you that can prescribe it, then you take it every day for however long you need to (I've been on it 4 years) Its not methadone, not even close, and it wont hook you even more than you are already like methadone can do. Its a miracle drug that saved my life (and I was hopeless) and can save yours too. Please, do this now.

  • @ryanthethird I work in a primary care clinic in SW Virginia where we treat people addicted to opioids with buprenorphine (Suboxone or Subutex). If used correctly, it can save lives. It's not as addicting because it is a partial agonist as compared to a full agonist for opioid receptors. I'm glad it has worked well for you.

  • @PumaPhreak1 You are correct ! I spent 7 years on methadone and laam parttime --they have disallowed laam now! heart problems....Methadone worked if you call not sleepin for 35 days and and stomach that is "gone"....CHOOSE THE BUPRENORPHINE 1ST if you can AFFORD IT ..peace

  • if you "dislike" john prine, in any respect, you don't understand quality lyrics and music

  • @mary0mca0gypsy0eyes if you "dislike" John Prine in any respect then you dont know jack about squat!

  • Used to play capoed pretty high up....admittedly he only "ever learned three chords" which isnt exactly true but he mostly plays g c d some f...later on post cancer he hasnt used capo as much given the lower voice post-op...know this is 99% true, but don't quote me on that bc i don't want to disrespect Mr. Prine...check out jpshrine.org

The first song my uncle taught me on guitar was christmas in prison, followed be paradise and i thank god/my uncle/john prine for that....r.i.p. Uncle Lee, ill

  • It baffles me that this only has 35000 views and the sh:t that Justine Bieber has has over a million. I want to move from this country.

  • Yes you're right @urgdaddy with that point; that was an amazing on-the-spot performance. That's how John is though, it just flows out of him. Like he said when he wrote it, he couldn't wait to get home to play it. That's a true songwriter's attitude. Many other great singer-songwriters can do it too, Neil Young definitely comes to mind on that subject. He wrote many great songs too, and probably on a whim like John. Anyways it's an awesome little clip and BIG thanks @1000Magicians who posted it.

  • The interviewer's voice sounds like Hoyt Axton, but if you say it's Bobby Bare, I guess you know. Thanks for the good sound recording, as well as the history lesson.

  • John, you are my hero. I got it way back when you and Steve were playing together. You are america, you are us and you are John Prine. the greatest song writer in our time... Love ya John..... Dennis

  • This is just AMAZING. Thank You so much for uploading!!!

  • How many Sam Stones will be coming home from Afganistan?

  • Very cool! Thanks for sharing this video with us. Thank you veterans, everywhere.

  • I love John Prine songs they have more meaning and move your heart more then you could ever imagine...What an Artist he is Thank you John ..from Brenda mackie ..Canada.

  • one of the saddest songs ever written in my opinion. interesting to know how it came to be.

  • This is the greatest on the spot performance...Sam Stone....our vets...god bless my brothers.

  • Thanks for the explaination John...I think I can find the way home now.

  • Does he always play this with a capo on the fifth fret?

  • Comment removed

  • i personally perfers swampp dogg's version it has alot more soul more emotion

  • @the1stbordecianclan that's great and all, but nothing beats the original no matter what song.

  • @the1stbordecianclan Ya know, in sports there are guys who do what folks call "false hustle". That's what the "emotion" in Swamp Dogg's version is, over-emotional, kinda like Jewel doin' "The Needle and the Damage Done". But hey, at least they dug the song enough to cover it......

  • What's the source of this? Is there a DVD or anything out there with more?

  • Wow. This is great. Where did this come from? Is there more? Thanks so much for posting

  • Thanks

  • Very good video could be about todays goings on. Thanks.
