  • That sounds like a nasty situation! Fortunately when we drove it there was very little traffic, but I was thinking what would happen if we ran into more vehicles going the opposite direction. I hope they don't shut the road down because it's so unique and has some of the most incredible touring scenery. I agree though more warning might help. I only saw one small warning sign coming from Lahaina but luckily I was giving some driving tips by a local before I drove it. BTW, I love Carla :)

  • There was a face off on this road today (Feb-7 at around 12pm HT) where 30 or so cars were backed up, with perhaps 5 cars coming the other way. The five cars slowly backed up in little alcoves, which were inches away from falling off the cliffs. This road should be shut down, and at a minimum, they should have a huge warning before anyone goes near this area.

  • I went there on my vacation, and got a pretty scary ride. Just like the vid, but it started to pour like crazy. The rain made it several times worse.

  • My wife and I decided to take the road around west maui one way and pretty much had the same thought everyone else has. It was ok while it was still Hwy 30 but once it turned into 340 it got pretty scary in parts. Very pretty but when you are looking out the drivers side of your rental and see nothing but a straight drop it gets kinds stressful. Luckily we got through it right before dark and didn't have to backup for any cars. We also got to see a wild boar looking down at us from a hill

  • @jdparsons1 You describe it perfectly! My friend, that was filming this, didn't realize the view I had on the drivers side. I was looking right down the cliff. There are no second chances on this road. I don't know if you saw, or if they are still there, but when we got through on the east side there was a field with about half a dozen crushed vehicles. I had to wonder if they were from people that didn't make it or a warning.

  • @PeaceLoveScoobie no i didn't see that. pretty creepy! We had a convertible Mustang and that really added to the view. In fact when we saw the boar it was up on a hill looking down at the car maybe 10 feet away, we would have missed it without that car. I wish i could have bought a "I drove Hwy 340 West Maui and Survived" t-shirt :-) When we did road to hana a couple days later i was like "this is nothing compared to 340"

  • Yeah... I was just there today. Wish I was warned....

  • My wife and I drove on this road by mistake after midnight. We could not see a single thing. We were so terrified for our lives for 2 and a half hours we got to our hotel a 2.45pm. I wish we had been warned about this Road to Perdition. Thanks for chronicling it. I did not wish to go back and see it during the day.

  • haha try fitting a hummer on that!

  • this looks very cool!
