how wet is your clay before you throw? because when i throw, it feels like i have to force the clay a lot whenever i bring it up and down to center...
@SpifySavannah Cause I said so. No really its less drag than other ribs, it only flexes in one direction at a time, and and it can be curved to match the shape generated.
a demo of those large sodium silicate vases that you threw for the latest woodfiring would be nice to see, im curious to see your technique on making those
because if you hold the rib in a curve and you push from the outside, it will make the outside wall into the desired shape or curve of the rib, just have a steady but patient touch
THanks, Tim. There's a lot of useful detail in this clip. By the way, as you belly out the vase, are you pressing from the inside with only your fingers, or is the back of your hand also pressing out?
I was pretty excited to see that way of opening the clay. That has been my problem more times than I can count. I always have to even out the mouth of my vessel because of opening off center, it doesn't even have to be that far off center either. Anyone I have seen throw in real time opens by poking/stabbing the clay. Thanks
got a question..do you apply more pressure on your right or left hand when you pull up the wall..coz you made it a cylinder so straight and fast..i have problem pulling up the walls..beginner here..
you need to apply more pressure on the outside near the base as you move past the base area it should be equal inside and out. both inside and outside hands should be at the same level and you need to move your hands straight up. Tim
Oh its just dirt. If you make each piece too special you wont take risks if you dont take risks you dont grow if you dont grow... insert something profound.
Very nicely explained. In all my reading on internet and in books, I haven't seen that technique of opening up. I will be trying it very soon! Thanks!

@MetalCranium3 the cay stiffness is determined by what you want to make. the taller and thinner the stiffer the clay

@timseepots Ok then :) Do you have a video that explains how to pull the walls up in better detail? That is my main problem on the wheel :(

Very well explained. Now the trick is to practice! Thanks you.

Why use the metal rib to make the shape?

@timseepots So, would a rubber rib work just as well as a metal rib?

Are you looking to see it large or like the one I show on the video called stretched pattern pottery?
timseepots 2 years ago
That's about the best 5 minutes of pottery making I've seen on YouTube.

how does holding the rib on the outside and pressing out from the inside shape it?

Another great video. You are indeed a fast Potter! It seems to take me ages to throw a vase and I can never get the height I want - grr!
Thanks for taking the time and trouble to share your talent.
