  • Far fekkin out. Shoot the keyboard player.

  • By forcing extra air into the drones it pushes the bass drone into the harmonic 4th that is the F# or C#. This happened by accident when he was messing around with the pipes. This ultimately changes the whole dynamic of his playing by adding an extra harmonic. Also Mick O Brien has a fourth drone in tenor A on this concert D set which acts similarly.

  • It is Mikie Smyth, playing his Geoff Woof C# set.

  • looks /sounds like a Rogge / Horstman set C or even B flat ,could be wrong though ....artist gan anim ,but great !

  • @jStevieO Geoff Weoff C# set and the artist is Mikie Smyth

  • Mighty!!

  • That pipe is really in tune! I wonder how much he payed for it ...

  • they go for about 6 grand these day,s in euro

  • @pekerdalton this set cost him 7000 pounds in 1997 his D set came to 14000

  • Mikie Smyth is one of the best........it was good seeing him in Loughrea a couple of weeks ago.

  • Love the sound coming out of that instrument

  • Oh, this is just so beautiful......Uilleann pipe music rocks! thanks for posting this! Please keep posting more like it!

  • This is really touchy. At least to me... Even though I'm not from Ireland or so. But still there is something with the sound of bagpipes that just fills me with joy and hope! It's a beautiful instrument, really. Perhaps the most beautiful one when played on it's own.

  • It's a lovely sound alright- but these are not bag pipes but Uilleann pipes, they make a much softer sound than bagpipes. Check out Davey Spillane for some fantastic pipe playing.

  • Uilleann pipes are a form of bagpipe. So either word could be used. Though in common practice the word bagpipes usually means highland pipes.

  • I play both XD

  • The First Tune is a Air and the secound is O sullivins March.

  • very nice

  • Very nice.

    A fine feckin tune

  • Wooooaw! i feel the harmony

  • Parts of the slow melody sounds like The Galway Shawl

  • How much does a full set of Uileann pipes cost?

  • A brazilian mate of mine was looking to buy a set some years back. Apparently a practice set costs Euro4,000 and takes 10 months to make. A full set can cost 10K.

  • The Air is "The Fairy Child"

  • and what is the name of the other song?

  • in case you're still wondering, the air is also known in gaelic as "An Leanbh Sidhe". The second tune is also commonly known in gaelic as "An Sean Duine" -the old man

  • A musician's musician.

  • haunting music..... fantastic

  • uileann pipes are different. u can get so many more sounds with them

  • thats o'sullivans march at the end there by the way.

  • Thats Mikie on his Geoff Wolfe set in C(or maybe C#)

those are incredible to listen to. You should here them in better sound quality...amazing...Horray for Mikie.

  • Tá sé go h-iontach cinnte!

  • Níl aithne agam ar an bpiobaire sin

    ach tá sé go h-iontach.

  • The drones sound wicked.

  • I dont think that this the normal tuning for the drones. maybe there tuned C,A,C and not C,C,C,. ??

  • I think it's C, F#, C.

  • Rather, I think it's C#, F#, C#.

  • Close. The tenor and tenor are tuned to C# and the bass to F#. (sorry if this is what you meant...) I'm not quite sure how Mikie tunes them like this- usually this is not possible- he seemed to give a kind of jerk to the bag. He also said that they are unique in being to do this. Also could the person who filmed this put up more please?? I saw you filming it!

  • Beautiful. Thanks to whoever posted this.

  • wht a frequence!!!

  • Beautiful, haunting, evocative of dear memories. Thank you for a St Patrick's day treat.

  • Uileann pipes, not bagpipes. Lovely playing mind.

  • Uilleann pipes are bagpipes.

That's a bag with pipes sticking out of it.

Mikey Smyth is an amazing player.
