Which isn't democracy based on popular vote? A bias select few should not determine a moral law in Iowa such as this one.

1. A true, complete democracy is simply impractical. The US (or even just the state of Iowa) doesn't have the time or money to have a popular vote on every single issue. There are just too many people.

2. (This is much more arguable.) The majority of the founding fathers didn't trust the opinions of the general public. Even today, political knowledge is ridiculously low, to the point that rep.'s are invaluable tools for effective policy making.

Depending on the state civil unions are allowed some or all of the the benefits that are granted to married couples. Legalizing gay marriage would confuse my children into thinking gay marriage is the same as traditional marriage. Churches would also have to marry gays the same way they would straight people even if the church dosn't believe in homosexuality. This would be enforced by law and gays could sue if the church refused. I don't hate gays but I don't want them forcing their will on me.

Who cares about the chemistry behind homosexuality? The point is that most gay people say they didn't have a choice, and the evidence shows that forcing them to change causes severe damage.  In a free and fair democracy, you don't discriminate against people for things that are irrelevant to their contribution to society, and which they cannot change. Mr Branstad is not fit to be governor. First of all, he openly admits he wishes to inject his religious views into his duties as governor. Second, he apparantly doesn't realize that fundamental rights are not subject to the whims of the people and are not meant to be subject to the outcomes of popular votes. The courts have ruled repeatedly that the right to marry the person of one's choosing is a fundamental right enjoyed by all people.

The judges weren't activist. They are supposed to act as a sperate entity to determine constitutionality of the law. A majority voting down individual rights based on their religious ideals isn't constitutional. Courts are what decided mixed race marriage was okay, even though the majority voted that it wasn't. Judges aren't supposed to be activist but they are supposed to judge when the public or it's leaders are wrong in light of individual rights and the constitution.

Claiming you know exactly what causes it is to say you know more than all of the world's scientists. One thing is clear about homosexuality: it's cause isn't some single thing. There are likely dozens of contributing factors from genetics to upbringing to you name it.

A person's sexual orientation and identity develops over years from childhood through the teens. Various physiological and neurological factors contribute to this. Your claim that it's all traceable simply to chemicals released in the womb is not supported by any scientific consensus, because none yet exists for this.

Evolution has nothing to say about what is right or wrong. And, homosexuality occurs commonly throughout nature. "It just is" is not a valid answer to "why is it wrong?"
